It's ironic that NBC's most original sitcom in years is a remake, but who cares? The Office is a daring, unflinching take on very American workplace tensions.
Not an unqualified success, but it is eminently watchable. What's more, it does the near-impossible: It doesn't make the viewer forget the original, but it actually inspires affection, instead of cries of "sacrilege!" from this rabid "Office" fan.
Do not listen to the "Critics" for this title. They will often compare it to the UK predecessor, but it has simply evolved into it's own experience. This show is and always will be one of those masterpieces that make one wish it would never end. It's obviously carried by the great Steve Carrell for the first few seasons, however the other actors soon develop into rememberable characters. If you are looking for comedic charm that leaves you quoting lines in your everyday conversations, then this is the show for you.
The Office is my all time favorite show! It is not only hilarious but it also has emotional factors that make it so hard to stop watching. My family and I have seen every single episode and still never get sick of watching it. The first few episodes were a little rough but as it goes on it gets much better. I definitely recommend this show to anyone 13 and up. The Office always makes you laugh and sometimes even cry.
To be sure, The Office is an acquired taste and sometimes a challenge to watch. Still, it's at least a worthy follow-up to the original, and it attempts to plot its own course in future episodes. [23 Mar 2005, p.E-1]
The well-traveled Carell is a very talented guy, from "The Daily Show" to "Anchorman," but understatement and restraint are hardly his forte. As a consequence, he plays Michael bigger, and therefore harder to endure, than Gervais did --- a fine line that's significant in such a delicately balanced comedy. [24 Mar 2005]
Instead of life-affirming laughter, we get an occasional ironic chuckle in NBC's version of The Office. It's a comedy that offers only escape instead of insight into our workaday lives. [24 Mar 2005, p.1E]
Carell doesn't capture the weird charm, the subtlety and the vulnerability -- and the show doesn't have any of those...Frankly, it's sometimes so painful to watch you can just imagine remotes clicking all across the country. [24 Mar 2005]
Although it takes a few seasons to get into it, this is by far my favorite show of all time. Every character within the show is given plenty of opportunity for you to get to know and love like they were your own best friend. As someone that will ultimately work in an office setting, I can only hope that my experience will be half as great and entertaining as this show was. Overall, I would rate this as one of the best comedic tv shows of all time.
There often seems very little reason for these US remakes of successful television shows and many attempts, such as Life on Mars or The Inbetweeners, have failed completely as their creators simply don't grasp the concepts that made the originals great.
With Michael Schur involved The US Office certainly comes with good pedigree but this short (by US standards) opening season, while sometimes genuinely funny thanks to its great cast, still suffers from direct comparison. Even ignoring the pilot, which is pointlessly an almost word for word copy of the UK versions pilot, many of the plots in these first six episodes are taken from the original with only minor changes being made. This in itself is not a problem but the script simply lacks the subtlety that made Gervais's creation so different to any 'sit-com' that had come before.
As witnessed by other great UK comedies, such as Peep Show and The Inbetweeners in recent times, I think it is safe to say that we as a nation also do cringe-worthy or car-crash humour better than anyone else. Sure, Steve Carell does an impressive job in the lead role but his politically incorrect and desperate fumbling's just never quite connect in the same way as David Brent did when in full flow.
For me The US Office has just about done enough to convince me to come back for another try next season but, with a full twenty plus episode order it must start to carve its own niche if it is to avoid continual unfavourable comparisons to its inspiration.
Scenes with Dwight were definitely the most entertaining and actually funny, and I enjoyed some of the more awkward characters too like Kevin and Stanley. It's a short season but it shows a lot of promise if it goes in the right direction. The show works best when it's NOT showing Steve Carell, he was annoying.
moocel scott is dum. his jokes arent funny. this show is dum. watch real shows like walking dead or the real house wives of atelaenta. my least favorite pert of the shew is that jim is a lammo, he isnt even funny. do something elsae with ur tiem.
