    It's still a great cast, but there's a whiff of baffled frustration. [26 Nov 2012, p.44]

This second season has written "budget cuts" all over it. Ava lost her show and is leading a "normal life", which means "boring". Where did all her personality go? Reagan lost her job, too and now takes care of her daughter.
So, no more TV studio (all those expensive extras...) where we would see Ava and Reagan meet interesting, funny and often crazy people. And where is Missy, Ava's assistant? She was funny!
No more Will Forte, Chris Diamantopoulos and Megan Mullally, which leaves us with not that much.
Instead, we now see Chris working with Reagans boring brother doing construction work, Chris and Reagan visiting book shops and cafes and so forth.
The first season was hit and miss, having some good episodes among them with the highlight being the "New Year" episode. I would call this second season mediocre at best. In the last episode, they had Sean Hayes and Tony Hale as guests, but they were more or less wasted, since the writers didn't give them enough to do.
I like this cast just as the next guy and I hope the show will get better. It all depends on the writers coming up with interesting and funny stories after "retooling" the show. Most importantly, the need to give the great Maya Rudolph something to do to make her shine. But as for now, this show is not good enough.
