Overall, the general feel of Shadow Wars is a solid turn-based strategy game -- even if its story backdrop, limited multiplayer, and character archetypes are short on originality.
Even if it's possibly the least impressive showcase for the Nintendo 3DS technology, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is a great turn-based strategy game, and definitely one of the best titles in the whole launch line-up.
Horribly underrated SRPG (though the RPG part is very light). From the creator of XCOM. By far the best launch game for the console, was ignored and underrated by the "professional" critics because as we all know by now, they are overpaid morons. This ended up with the game having abysmal sales, so we will never get a sequel. Nice job reviewers! Nice job...
If you like tactics games like Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, XCOM, and others, you should give this one a try. Has a decent story and quite good gameplay. The multiplayer is very fun, and you can play multiplayer taking turns on the same console with your friends. I have had tons of fun playing it this way.
The graphics are not very good, but this is to be expected as this was originally made for the DS, then they decided to bring it to the 3DS instead, since they were very late on the DS cycle.
The story is also forgetable. It is kind of fun, and it is one of the few "mature" "real life"-like stories on the 3DS, but nothing to care much about. It works though.
Still, you don't play tactical games for the graphics or story. You play them for the gameplay. And this game has good gameplay.
You can find it cheap today, and i totally recommend it. One of the best 3DS games.
Even years after launch, this game stands up tall. Brilliantly addictive gameplay, and still there's nothing else on 3DS that comes close. Shame there's no sequel. 10/10
To conclude, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is a huge diversion from the norm, but it's also quite a good game. In fact, it's one of the best launch titles for the Nintendo 3DS.
That said, the suite of options completes what is a very nice package for strategy fans. Honestly, I'm a little shocked by the overall quality of the experience; in lesser hands, I'm sure it would have ended up being a mediocre port of the console shooters. Instead, we've been treated to a scrumptious strategy experience from one of the best designers in the business. It's not a turn that I was expecting for the Ghost Recon franchise, but I will definitely take it.
One of the best games in 3DS release. Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars offers enjoyable turn based action with a diverse squad and tactically enjoyable terrain. I like it a lot! [May 2011]
While it might not be the most pleasant-looking game or have a ton of depth, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is still enjoyable and at its best when played in small doses.
As an adult, this is THE best 3DS game I've played (even after Super Mario Land 3D, Mario Kart 7, etc.!) for all the following reasons:
1) Multiple characters to pick from with various weapons and powers
2) Large number of campaigns - I've played countless hours, and am still playing
3) There's some strategy involved in picking right characters and weapons for missions, but not to the point that it's painful and onerous
4) Controls are fantastic and easy to follow
5) Each mission is can be saved at any point in time so you can save before taking certain risks
Although I didn't pay the full retail price for it, I would happily have done so without a thought. BUY IT if you haven't yet!
I was a bit unsure of whether to get this game. I have played games like Advance Wars and Fire Emblem in the past and have really enjoyed them, but for some reason, modern gaming has made me only buy a game if it has good online multiplayer, good graphics and a good story....turns out neither of these things are needed to make this one of the best launch titles for the 3ds, it will keep you occupied for ages and the gameplay is extremely addictive! Worth every penny!
Pros:
- Great Difficulty (The Main Reason this Game didn't get a 6)
- Nail-bitingly Intense
- Good Gameplay Elements
Cons:
- Under-developed Characters
- Underwhelming Story
Not too bad, but not too goos, either. Gameplay is a bit stuttered, and the game as a whole is let down by dodgy graphics. The lack of online play makes this game a "kinda have". I bought it hoping for more, but will probably end up trading it.
Compared to other strategic games on 3DS (Fire Emblem series, for example) it's a very simplistic game, with not at interesting story at all and very repetitive content.
The only good this game have it's the 3 difficulties it have, and the bunch of missions (all of them very similar..)
