After playing the first chapter, I am very much looking forward to the rest of the chapters!
While this game does not quite reach the levels of humour of the Monkey Island games and such, it has it's very own charm. The (solo) developer did a great job!
A little note regarding amount of play time, since I saw another review here stating that it would only be about 2 hours long. It took me about 6 hours to complete it. It would surprise me if one could listen to all the conversations within 2 hours, let alone complete the various puzzles.
The game reminds me fondly of the time when I was younger playing Monkey Island 3. The humor and atmosphere was great - I got about 5-6 hours of time out of this.
All characters have full voice acting in german and english and you can see that the creator put a LOT of work into this. Looking forward to the sequels!
Twisted Tale is one of those solo-dev games. Therefore, I approached the game with lowered expectations regarding production value.
I forgive such indie titles for unpolished animations or other imperfections. I just wanted to mention that upfront.
Unfortunately, Twisted Tale has quite different problems aside from these things, starting with the fact that it's not a complete game. That wouldn't be so bad on its own, but it's communicated rather pragmatically by the developer on ****, we're playing Chapter 1 of a longer story. So far, so good. However, the game doesn't feel like a Chapter 1; rather, it feels like a slightly drawn-out prologue. Not much happens, and it only plays on very few screens (I didn't count, but I would estimate around 10), and unfortunately, with few exceptions, they are not very interestingly designed either.
Much gameplay time is generated by the protagonist having a lot to say about many hotspots. Unfortunately, her overly long comments are often not relevant to the story or puzzles and don't help with characterizing the character or the world; instead, they often seem simply trivial. That's a shame.
Regarding the story: Unfortunately, the game fails to engage me as a player from the beginning and involve me in its story. The unknown protagonist is teleported to a strange place, and that's it. There's no interesting world-building, the protagonist accepts her situation with a shrug, and one starts by chatting with all NPCs aimlessly and talking about everything except the strange situation that protagonist Vio is in. I found that somewhat odd.
The gameplay is decent. Some puzzles were quite charming. However, there are often lacks of clues, which can lead to frustration very quickly.
According to the developer, the entire game is supposed to comprise 7 chapters, which I find quite ambitious, if not extremely risky.
I wish the developers all the best and hope that they learn from the difficulties of their first chapter and improve a lot in the next ones. Then I'll gladly give Chapter 2 another chance, but probably in a sale.
