It’s an overly straightforward and dull simulation with enough downtime for you to ponder the greater fun you’ll be having playing “Railroads!” in a couple of months. [Dec. 2006, p.78]
If your fetish for black gold is such that none of these problems dissuade you from getting one of the few games ever made on the oil business, you'll find a decent selection of scenarios, a free play mode, and even multiplayer. The rest of us should simply avoid the title and use the savings for gas money.
I'd still love to see a game that actually dealt with the complex issues oil companies have faced in the last 100 years, but Big Oil definitely isn't it.
Big Oil is poorly designed all around, with frustrating bugs, a practically unworkable interface, and tiresome gameplay.
Big Oil is a big bust ... of Enron proportions.
Developer Dartmoor Studios seemingly cranked this one out for the sole purpose of filling the space between "Airport Tycoon" and "Coffee Tycoon" on the budget game shelf at Wal-Mart. [Nov. 2006, p.76]
How bad is this game? Well, if you try to ship oil from Alaska to Tokyo, the boat doesn't cross the Pacific, it heads east, around Latin America and Africa. That's right, the game's developers think the world is flat.
