  • Summary: Race Driver: Create and Race has been designed from the ground up for Nintendo DS and lets players thrash the most formidable sports cars through closely-fought races on the world's most prestigious circuits... and then lets players create their own circuits with a full track construction kit. Using the DS stylus, the game's track editor lets players select and place race track elements, such as hairpin corners, long straights and chicanes, to design unique circuits. Once all the pieces are placed to perfection, players can take to their track and experience exactly what it's like in aggressive multiple car races. In addition to the track editor, the game features 32 real-world circuits – from Silverstone and the Nurburgring to Bathurst – and 25 officially licensed race cars, including the AMG Mercedes C Klasse D, and the Chevrolet Silverado Truck. Making use of the Nintendo DS Wi-Fi connection capabilities, players can challenge others to races on the game's official tracks as well as the circuits of their creation. Race Driver: Create and Race also enables up to four players to go head-to-head in races gamesharing from only one cartridge. Further championships and cars can be unlocked from the World Tour Mode and then raced in realtime online and ad hoc multiplayer modes. [Codemasters] Expand

  1. Despite the extreme challenge, Race Driver is a gripping, adrenaline-soaked experience.
  2. This surpasses expectations. It looks great, has fantastic online features and the course editor is brilliant. If only the cars felt a little more like cars. [Oct 2007, p.90]

A very impressive console-level arcade-style racer that pushes an incredible list of features and creative elements.
  4. I will admit I was frustrated a few times when I failed to complete some of the challenges or kept getting my butt kicked in some of the Championships but, I loved it.

Wow! This has to be the best racing game on the DS, it might even be better than mario kart! The editor is loads of fun and really gives the game legs, you'll not get bored of this for a long time! Expand

This is a fast, slick and fun racing game, a real surprise on the DS I have to say. Its got loads of content and unlockables, so single players will be kept busy for a good while trying to complete everything. Once you've done that you can design and race around your own tracks, which is awesome, and then there's the all important multiplayer over Nintendo Wi-Fi, where you can race against friends, rivals or random people. There are a few rough edges and controls are sometimes a bit flaky (or maybe it's just that I'm a bad driver!). It's not a realistic racing sim, the cars do slide all over the place, more like the space racers in FX Zero than the super sports cars of Pro Gotham et al. Graphics are good for the DS and everything that needs to work, works pretty well. If you like racers you'll get a whole lot of fun out of this. Expand

Much like the several other potentially excellent racing games over the years, this one is also hamstrung in the single most important area. These are supposed to be race cars, not stock, right off the lot regular vehicles. You don't buy plain cars for cheap and then upgrade them with racing parts in this game... So, you'd expect them to handle as though they have proper racing-grade tires, brakes and suspensions. But they don't. You can't honestly call it an arcade racer (like NFS etc.), nor can you call it a sim (Gran Turismo etc.). It's just a mess. Games like this are the most bitterly disappointing because they get so much right, and you can tell that a significant amount of effort was put into their development. How then can they miss such an obvious defect? If you loathe silly kid cart racers as I do (say you're 16 or older and have some real-world driving experience), you're still out of luck on the DS I'm afraid. It's a terrible shame how close this one came. Easily could've been a 9 or better. Expand

I can't believe the scores this game got, it's one of the worst games I've ever played, not just the DS, control is near impossibe, and literally is once enough damage to your vehicle, menus are half-assed, most glitch, and are rendered worse than someone using MSPaint, online is dead, even the highscore lists aren't even full, but chances are you won't have the sanity to play the game long enough to get to those races. 0/10, first time I've ever fully felt like a game deserved it, I'm not even going to look at another codemaster or firebrand game.
