80Top Spin 3 is what Top Spin 2 was a year ago, but with a playable speed, and a frame rate that’ll deliver on what your imagination sees as you stare at the back of the box at your local game store. It’s a tiny Top Spin experience, but it has the rhythm, tight control, and addictive nature of its console counterparts this time around.
-
50Top Spin 3's hardcore AI is on par with the console versions, but the overall package isn't nearly as fun.
-
70This unforgiving approach may well please dedicated tennis enthusiasts but it will only frustrate those just looking for a fun experience.
-
With the frame rate issues of previous versions truly fixed, this is about a good a tennis sim as the system is capable of providing. Given the limitations of the controls, though, I would suggest you leave the racket sport to the living room. Or Wimbledon.
-
Though suffering from weak visuals and slightly ponderous pace, Top Spin 3's tight controls and involving career mode see it challenging at the top of the DS tennis rankings.
-
80Top Spin 3 is a great example of how to make a serious sports game. It has all the facts, figures and strenuous exercise but presents them in a way that's accessible and entertaining for all.
-
Concerns about graphics and frame rate in "Top Spin 2" for the DS have been addressed successfully by new developer PAM in the follow-up. [June 2008, p.90]
-
60Top Spin 3 features an improved frame rate and enhanced Career mode over last year’s Top Spin 2. Unfortunately, the game’s AI is overly difficult and the visuals are bland. On the plus side, the multiplayer mode is solid, there are a decent number of mini-games on offer, and the controls are easy to pick up.
-
Newcomers should steer clear. [Oct 2008, p.77]
-
50Top Spin 3 for the Nintendo DS seems a reasonable game at first, but soon it unveils itself as a shallow experience. There's little variation in the gamelpay and it's not clear if the developers were focussing on realism of arcade.
-
60Top Spin 3 isn't flashy, but it's fun, and if you need a tennis game for DS, this one is aces in our book.
-
Tennis with the fun taken out, although some may appreciate the realism. [Issue#26, p.79]
