It’s amazing to see such a passionate debut title from Studio Sai. Eternights elegantly blends in addicting and engaging action combat with dating mechanics while providing beautiful visuals and excellent voice acting. I can’t wait to see what’s next from this small team of developers.
Mixing Persona with real-time combat, Eternights delivers a robust package with charming characters, intimate romance, quirky writing, vibrant visuals, and an engaging gameplay loop. Despite it's flaws, Eternights makes a valiant effort in being one of the many games you will enjoy this year, and is a must play for RPG fans.
Eternights may not be a game-changer for the genre, but it still offers a solid experience, thanks to a strong cast of characters and an engaging gameplay, especially in its dating sim aspect. It caters to a very specific audience and will likely thrive within its niche; however, if you have even a remote interest in this genre, we recommend giving it a chance: you won't regret it.
Eternights is a true labor of love from a small team of developers that set out to create something for themselves. It just so happens that it’s also one of my favorite games of 2023. If you can look past the juvenile character moments and flimsy early plot devices, you’re in for an awesome experience that delivers quality action combat, hilarious character skits, and a very strong final Act. It’s an experience I won’t soon forget and one that doesn’t demand too much from players to play till the credits. The wait for this release was genuinely worth it, and I’m happy to see this ambitious project come together so brilliantly.
Eternights' great success is that it manages to be more than the sum of its parts. The witty writing papers over the shakier aspects of the storytelling, the slight combat is used sparingly enough that its flaws rarely frustrate, and above all, it's got an undeniable charm despite its rough edges. We're swiping right on this one.
Part of my interest in independent titles involves viewing the art form without the overwhelming gloss. Eternights has that gloss, which is an accomplishment in its own right, but when you peel that away, you just find something that seems a bit bland and lifeless. Certainly, not a night you’ll remember. You’d probably be better off just keeping your hand.
This game is better than Persona. One of the best game i played this year (2023).
If you like games where you can make bonds just buy it,play it and be delighted.
When I finish this game i feel hollow and I didn't know what to do with myself. I felt that I am a player for moments like these.
Eternights is the first video game from the South Korean indie studio “Studio Sai” and for a first game you have to say that it is a strong product. It features strong action gameplay with an intriguing and sometimes funny plot, as well as good art direction and animation. The game lacks a certain polish in the game design and feels stretched and unnecessarily long at times. If someone is a huge Persona fan the game will like a rough gem.
The game has a lot of the core features down solid. The story itself is both interesting enough and the characters are enjoyable enough to want to complete. That being said, I could not. It is interesting that even all this time after the original digital release they couldn't fix the game enough. I might have been able to smash my head against the problem long enough to get through it, but then the rest is just so underwhelming.
The fight portion of the game is easily the worse part of the game. There's a lot of fun RPG elements held back by some of the worst visuals in any game released in a long time, and just the usual pushing the same buttons you get with action RPGs.
The game is also incomprehensibly dark. Perhaps this is to hide the poorly designed 3D models in game, but it hinders the game as a whole when you can't see anything happening.
I can see this is an indie developer which is honestly the real reason I rated a game I wont even complete higher than a 1. Looking forward to seeing more from the developer though, and despite my issues with the game I look forward to seeing what the developer can do in the future and hoping they mad enough to improve on those core principals.
A Gamble That Didn't Pay Off: A Review
This game took chances, and it didn't pay off, not in the slightest. It's a mixed bag of missed opportunities and underwhelming gameplay that leaves much to be desired.
The Story
The story is bland, lacking the depth and intrigue that make for a compelling narrative. It feels like an afterthought, a mere backdrop for the gameplay rather than an integral part of the experience. The plot fails to engage, leaving you feeling disconnected and uninterested.
The Gameplay
The side quests are dull, offering little in the way of variety or challenge. They feel repetitive and uninspired, adding little to the overall experience. The combat, while initially interesting, quickly becomes boring. It lacks the depth and complexity that would keep it engaging over time. The game is essentially a dungeon crawler with a dating visual novel tacked on, and no exploration. This combination could have been interesting, but the execution leaves much to be desired. The dungeon crawling feels tedious rather than exciting, and the dating visual novel aspect feels out of place and poorly integrated.
The Characters
The only redeeming quality of this game is the characters. They are well-written and interesting, providing a much-needed respite from the otherwise lackluster gameplay. Their interactions and development are the highlight of the game, making it somewhat bearable.
The Verdict
In conclusion, this game is a disappointment. It's a gamble that didn't pay off, with its bland story, dull side quests, and boring combat. The only saving grace is the characters, but they alone can't carry the game I wouldn't waste my time on this game again. Instead, I'll go back to Persona 5, a game that delivers on all fronts and offers a far more satisfying and engaging experience.
This game, unfortunately, falls short of the mark. It's a lesson in missed opportunities and the importance of cohesive, engaging gameplay.
SummaryOne day, something, or someone, has turned humans into dangerous monsters. All that interests them now is violence and power. They are what stand between you, a cure, and the world you want. Most importantly? You're fighting for more than just your own survival - you are fighting for those you love.
