There's one thing that really distinguishes the EverQuest phenomenon from all pretenders to the throne, for better or worse—difficulty. Slaving for weeks through one of the higher "hell levels" isn't just time-consuming, it's quite often toil.
The expansion pack to EverCrack opens up new worlds, new characters, and tigers with boobies (finally!). [Feb 2003, p.94]
The improved graphics, faction ideas, better integrated story (the three warring races), the new tricks with special items, two new Planes, and incredible user interface upgrades all make Velious an excellent addition to EverQuest.
It's clearly stated on the box that it isn't suitable for inexperienced players, while those who are experienced enough to explore the new lands it has to offer will certainly find these areas to be extremely challenging and rewarding.
EverQuest reaches a certain peak and maturity with The Scars of Velious, further solidifying the franchise as the premiere massively multiplayer online RPG.
A wise investment for a veteran EverQuest player but is not such a good purchase for someone just beginning to explore the initial game.
If you're already hooked, pick it up. Otherwise, the benefits aren't worth the investment. [Mar 2001, p.68]
