A fantastically frantic, competitive, addictive and exhilarating racer that manages to take the XG series to a whole new level.
-
The top speed gameplay and accompanying effects that come with it are really impressive. The only real downside is that there isnt enough depth in the gameplay.
-
75Tight, if heavy control, a seriously improved weapon system that makes for a lot of fun, and the insane tracks that XG fans have come to expect from the franchise. This is a bigger game -- more courses and a slightly expanded Season Mode, too.
-
75Unfortunately for Acclaim, the Cube has just been hit up with three outstanding racers including "Mario Kart: Double Dash!!," "F-Zero GX," and "Need for Speed Underground." In that company, XGRA looks average.
-
If only the weaponry was more balanced to better fit the racing action, this would be one hell of a racing title.
-
The speeds are insane, the courses almost incomprehensible and the immersion factor deep, provided you have patience and surgical analog skills. [Oct 2003, p.72]
-
72It's bigger and more ambitious than any of its predecessors, but XGRA is hindered by a few unfortunate technical and design issues.
-
71The game is pretty easy to run through due to the progression based on points rather than victories, and makes the game seem to get done with too quickly.
-
XGRA isn't as impressive as "Extreme G 3" was when it first hit PS2 and Cube. The graphics look roughly the same, it plays similarly, and it has the same main drawback: not enough tracks. [Nov 2003, p.174]
-
The graphics are top-notch and the techno music mix goes well with the game's energy and style. [Mar 2004, p.119]
-
Seems like a step back for the franchise. XG3 had a weapon system based on powerups that were bought, XGRA is sort of random. The tracks don't entice the way XG3's did either.
-
Acclaim's latest manages to tick all the required futuristic race sim boxes, except the one titled 'memorable'. There's one really good thing about XGRA - it's all over very quickly. [Nov 2003, p.109]
-
42At first glance, with it's twisting, gravity-defying tracks and fluorescent visuals, XGRA might remind you of the recent "F-Zero GX." Upon further inspection it's actually slower, sometimes much slower, less colorful and a lot less interesting.
