  • Summary: Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land is a turn-based strategy RPG based around the works of cult horror writer H.P.Lovecraft. The game is set in the midst of the First World War and pits a team of soldiers and investigators against an insidious cult intent on using the slaughter of the Great War to open the doors to an invasion of eldritch horrors. Manages to get a lot of things right, like the story, style, and basic gameplay mechanics, though the game's high amount of difficulty will probably turn off some players. Now that Red Wasp Design has released an update, this is arguably one of the best turn-based strategy titles on the App Store. Fans of horror and turn-based strategy alike, consider this one a must buy.

Not very faithful to Cthulhu table top game traditions, but it is an enjoyable turn based tactical game nevertheless. [Apr 2012]

We are quite sure that Lovecraft would be pleased with this game. It has some little flaws in the control system, but it's great in all other respects.

Those interested into a turn based strategy game with a proper story will still have a great deal of fun with the game, as will those who keeps Lovecraft art on the wall and his writings under the pillow.

After a while, you're just watching numbers get bigger as you take turns flinging pain across the battlefield. The only madness here comes when you run out of resources well into a fight and have to restart from the beginning.

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land takes a genre that hasn't received much love in recent years and revamps it for modern devices whilst keeping the original gameplay intact. It's such a shame then that the game's few flaws stifle the enjoyment of what could otherwise be a new classic iOS game.

Red Wasp Design seems to prefer detail to elegance, and that's exactly the wrong call to make on the iPhone. It's also a damn shame in a game with such an obvious affection for its own characters and the Lovecraft mythos.

This turn-based strategy game is similar in style to XCOM and UFO: Enemy Unknown, but replaces the aliens with HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu creatures and german soliders in the trenches of World War One in Europe.

The gameplay is smooth and the graphics look really good on retina display and iPad. Playing the tutorial is a must due the complexity of the game.

The game has a sinister and brooding feel which is enhanced by the unusual music and warped sounds. The narrative is intriguing and takes you down some unexpected paths.

Can't recommend it enough, this game is a must buy!

Good idea, but there are too many annoying problems with the interface and the gameplay. For example when you fail a mission there's nomway to go back and reconfigure your soldiers. The only way is to restart the whole game again. Also the camera moves automatically to the character, so if you want to attack an enemy multiple times you have to move the camera every time, dozens of times... A waste of money IMO. Expand
