Flipflops, English leather and bandanas are the height of fashion. Meanwhile the Cold War is more than lukewarm and a real one is going on overseas. Movements are happening. Environmentalists, the female liberties movement, and on the dance floors an entirely different kind of movement is overtaking the underground clubs. The winds of change are certainly blowing over the country.Somewhere in the big city, in a tall, faceless government building someone left a window open. All the winds of change are doing here is blowing leaves all over Joe’s newly-swept floor. He’s been there for two years now. Working a dead-end attendant job making sure the building is as spotless as the suits walking the halls. It’s been like this for years, going from one soul-devouring job to the next. Our protagonist is Joe in more than just name. He is quite literally Joe Average. Average height, average weight, average IQ. In fact, the only thing remotely remarkable about him is exactly how much he conforms to the median of the hypothetical everyman, and up until this point, Joe’s life hasn’t exactly been biography material. This is all about to change. One morning while tending the floors, Joe is suddenly confronted by a mysterious dying man who is seemingly appearing out of nowhere. The man warns him that a terrible event is about to occur and pleads him to save mankind. As the man draws his last breath, he hands Joe a portable time travel device to aid him on his quest. It isn’t long before Joe activates the device and is confronted by the truth. The mysterious man was right: 40 years into the future mankind has become extinct. Stuck between a desolate future and a present where he is largely ignored, it is now up to our accidental hero to find out what has happened and how to prevent it in order to save mankind. Expand

Assuming additional episodes maintain the same quality of this first entry, The Silent Age will continue to be a must-play series well into the future.

Smart, mysterious and layered beneath a very welcome dose of otherworldly eeriness, The Silent Age will delight any adventure gamer who feels that the genre's revival, welcome though it is, is just a little too light-hearted in the 21st century.

Clearly, I enjoyed The Silent Age: Episode One, and I think there's a lot to admire here. It's free, and there are no in-app purchases, although you can donate to the developers' efforts to fund and finish Episode Two (of two, if I understand their blog correctly). I'd love to see Joe deliver that message and learn the answers to the mysteries raised in this episode, and I think that if you play it, you'll feel the same way.

In orderThe Silent Age is an eerily evocative adventure game that benefits enormously by an extremely well thought out time travel mechanic. In order to solve the wide variety of puzzles, you must use a small device to shift across time from the 1970s to a post apocalyptic future. It's similar to Day of the Tentacle in that respect but make no mistake, this is not a simple clone of old-school games. The Silent Age is one of the most uniquely original games to come out of the adventure game mini-renaissance that is occurring on iOS right now. I am greatly anticipating the sequel to this title and truly appreciative that this first chapter is available for free. If you want something more thoughtful than the usual tap tap app crap that is so prevalent in the iOS ecosystem then The Silent Age is not to be missed. Expand

While the game does feel repetitive in some areas and it isn't too long, this game has endless potential and reveals just enough of its interesting story to make players beg for more.

While, for the most part, the puzzles are easy, utilizing a pretty cool time travel mechanic, it's the story and writing that really carry this game through. Every time you click on an item, your character will have something increasingly funny to say each time. If you are looking for a good story to keep you entertained while you sit in a waiting room, or on a train, this game is certainly worth a buy. Expand
