One of the best strategy titles of the year…an out-and-out classic. [Feb 2002, p.65]
The downside to this aspect of the game is that (as mentioned) it can be downright frustrating to get to the point where you are actually even a minor 'player' on this regional stage.
The uninitiated will find the game monstrously intimidating, and it takes a bit of playing before you really start to engage. In order to get the most out of it, you need to sit down, learn its ins and outs, and suffer a lot of early setbacks while you get familiar with the game's complex mechanics.
Patrician II successfully blends trading, city-building, and simple ship combat in a way that's constantly engaging.
It has a depth few games of this genre can match. Fewer still can equal the level of micromanagement. [Feb 2002, p.92]
The main problem with Patrician 2, however, is the lack of delegation.
