We love the bullet hell gunplay of AK-Xolotl: its variety of weapons and abilities gives it plenty of depth, and its quirky enemy designs are a joy to come up against. But it’s the additional content here that really sets AK-Xolotl apart. Raising teeny “axolittles” will warm your heart – and sucking out their happiness will break it. But it’s all part of the eccentric wonder that is AK-Xolotl, which has quickly become one of our favourite roguelike games.
AK-xolotl is a twin-stick shooter full of action and personality. What bad can happen from giving cute creatures deadly weapons? It’s amazing how guilty this game made me feel for thinking about sacrificing my baby's happiness to power my character up!
really fun with lots of cool guns and items. plus the axolotls are amazing. definitely worth your money if you like rouge likes. The devs also have a very interesting road map, and lots of amazing content coming up.
Great alternative to ETG! Give it a try ;) You won't be disappointed. It has a nice amount of polish, quality, and quantity, with more coming soon. I'm happy that I helped back this on KS, and I'm proud of what this team created. ( I originally had this as a 10 score, but was disappointed that the physical is being sent to backers as an incomplete game that will require updates )
AK-xolotl is a must-play if you’re a fan of roguelikes and bullet hells. Its various enemies offer interesting attacks and are distinct enough that you can customize effective defensive strategies against them with a range of weapons and abilities. However, some of the runs can get quite repetitive.
With cute axolotls and a creative theme, AK-xolotl makes a fantastic first impression. Though the game's roguelike gameplay lacks depth, the challenging shmup keeps you enjoying this wildly imaginative journey.
Maybe AK-xolotl was rushed to market, or maybe its developer is already moving onward to the next game. What’s left is a fun but underweight action-roguelite that could have used slightly more polish and a lot more content for the asking price. Start to credits should run most players five hours or so, which is a low number for a generally challenging genre which all but requires a set of meaningful post-game mechanics. These are the lacking fundamentals which leave AK-xolotl looking like a hungry creature in search of a better habitat.
Incredibly meh. Same guns over and over, movement feels awful, music is crap, lame items, you have to change diapers on the axolittles (wtf?), can't heal until battle is over. For a game that charges more than Enter the Gungeon and gives you a sixth of the content, you would be better off just buying Gungeon.
Also, permanent upgrades in a rogue-like are usually a bad idea. Especially in this game which is already hardly challenging, it makes the game a cake walk.
I bought because I wanted to support the developers and the genre, I'm regretting the decision.
Disappointed. The game is another twin sticks shooter, top-view, randomised game. You do runs against the same levels once and again and again and again... You collect stuff on your different runs so that you can upgrade your character and perform better. You can breed axolotls that will become playable characters. But the game don't really include any new mechanic at all. It is just another killing-killing top view game with nothing special to offer. I payed €13 for this game which I think is fair, but I won't recommend this game.
SummaryThe cutest, deadliest and ONLY top-down roguelike shooter featuring AK-wielding Axolotls. Blast your way through the animal kingdom with an arsenal of kick-ass guns, mighty power-ups and even raise an army of trigger-happy baby axolotls.
