I wasn't expecting too much from a WW1 game as this is not my area of interest but boy and I was right. This is the worst game I've played for a long time. Poorly balanced, lacks depth, graphics are bad. It is the new king of WW1 strategy failures.

Wonderful strategy game ! Started playing yesterday and so far the game completely fulfilled my highest expectations. The graphics are really amazing , you completely get sucked into the action.
Highly addictive game : after completing a mission , you want to proof your tactical skills straight away in the next campaign.
My girlfriend won't see a lot of me in the next days.

Downloaded without a hitch on launch day. Played for over 6 hours without ONE hitch, no crashes, nothing. Gameplay was great, I was in that "just one more turn" mode, couldn't walk away from it. I like the fact that as Central Powers, I can control the research, production and armies of all the nations. Great to finally see a WW1 Grand Strategy Game that is challenging but simple to use, has simple graphics but is still unique and isn't full of bugs. Expand

I've seen better TBS games, this one got boring rather quickly. The game doesn't feel very polished, I guess just another rush job which seems to be quite common nowadays.

I played whole evening yesterday and in my opinion game is really great! It is very advanced which makes it really forcing player to think. I can manage many units, their upgrades and much more. Music, graphics are great. Also from technical site game us much improved comparing this with previous Commander titles. When I finish all missions the time for multiplayer will come. Cannot wait...but first things first...

What is more I do not understand sdbd opinion! It looks like he was able to play the game 3 hours before game was even available to be bought! His review appeared in couple websited under different users but with exact the same content...Poor competition act....

Great stuff ! This is the kind of game that will cost me my marriage one day. : ) Highly addictive in the sense that you simply can't resist doing "just one more round". And then when you finally finish, you want to start a whole new campaign right away. The excellent graphics really suck you into the world of the Great War.

I've played all the games in the commander series and this one is the crowning instalment by far. Been playing this all of yesterday evening and so far having a great time. The tutorial messages make it really easy to get in to. So far I've invaded Belgium and Serbia, but the AI is giving me a really hard time on the eastern front, it's really aggressive and has really punished me when I made a mistake (which is great fun :)). Great to see that NATO icons are an option, although the unit graphics look good too for those that like that sort of thing. Sound effects are good. Still haven't had time (or the courage) to start a multiplayer game yet, will try to beat the AI first. Expand

A fun game taking you back into history. It has all the easy to use features to make it highly addictive. But the real plus is the storyline taking you back in time and making you feel how the war was like from a commander standpoint or as a soldier. Sliderine is rocking with some cool games lately. Keep them coming.

The execution of combat is spotty, and the localization of this German game is a real issue. You receive the "Translation is missing" option in some conversation menus. This message also appears on some doors and gates in the dungeons; while the information isn't essential, it's nice for things in your game to have names. Sometimes, these names are still in German. The game also has some crash bugs, including one annoying crash that happens whenever you try to put more than three points into one of a character's skills, limiting his progression on that portion of the skill tree. These flaws point to one thing: The game isn't finished. Expand

I have wanted a Great War wargame for some time now. Those currently on the market just did not appeal to me. I had a feeling this would be the game to fill that void. Man on man was my gut feeling right on the mark. First the graphics are very nice, especially for a wargame. The earlier Commander games are bit rough in the looks department, but not Commander the Great War. Music fits the time period very well. CTGW is very easy to learn, but complex in strategy. The AI is very good. If you leave an opening the AI will take advantage of it and make you suffer. Trench warfare is modeled perfectly. Trying to break through the front line can be very difficult. The same as it was during the war. Offensive operations take planning. Trying to blast your way thru the enemy without considering artillery support and ammunition will just lead to defeat. In this game as during the war artillery is king. Diplomacy, production and research are simplified, but don't let that worry you. The focus here is the fighting. The PBEM system is fantastic. This game can be played in higher resolutions, even in window mode. I play at 1920x1080. CTGW is rock stable on my computer. I don Expand

Don't get too hopeful based on other reviews, because the game is clunky in most respects. Artificial intelligence often loses it, and will seldom flank you.
The manual is decent, but everything else about the game is so ugly, busted, or otherwise unpleasant that it all but negates that one positive point.

Haha, read about this at the developers Facebook page, what a pathetic guy posting false negative reviews and even false positive ones using faked publishers names as a login! Just to bring the score down.

If you want to read real feedback and reviews about this game just visit Slitherine, Matrix, The Wargamer or Grogheads. It is a good game, but I set the score here at 10 to vouch my support!

Don`t understand at all the negative reviews? This is a good wargame, period. Check the Slitherine and Matrix forums and see players reviews and AAR`s, what a bunch of lies beneath. Beware of the negative reviews, as most of them are false reviews that often mention features that don't even exit in the game. Josh4577's is a perfect example. He's obviously talking about an RPG game, but Commander:The Great War is a WWI grand strategy game! On the bright side, CTGW does exactly what it sets out to do, and does it brilliantly. This game is easy to play, yet difficult to master. The AI is a tough opponent. Juggling your resources between building new ground units, investing in research for new technologies and expanding your Artillery production is a precarious balancing act, as is moving and fighting on the battlefield. Historical commanders appear in the game, bringing with them bonuses to units within their command radius. You play as either the Entente allies or the Central Powers, and try to break the stalemate in the trenches and lead your side to victory. The best thing about CTGW is that its outcomes are plausibly historical, with enough openness in the game play to allow for the war to end differently than it did in real life. I'm having a blast, even though the AI is kicking my tail! Can't wait to play a multiplayer campaign against another human. Expand

I am not so much into turn based strategy games but was nicely surprised seeing that kind of game coming on as i still remember many days playing Panzer General on my first PC as a child. Anyway not really sure what are the complains about. The graphics is nice and together with the videos like from old historical movies creates a nice climate. If it comes for AI i would even say the game is little bit too hard for me, there should be some noob mode :) To summarize its a good game and i think some of the people here should go back to playing Battlefield as probably this is what they are looking for. Many of the reviews on this page seem to be unrelated wholly to this game. I like turn based strategies on a grand scale, especially WWII. Seldom have I found a WWI game that has held my interest. So far this one definitely seems to break that mold. The FOW makes it quite difficult to play, and time will be needed to get a better appreciation of how it all works. I prefer being able to turn it off when I am first playing to get a feel for how both sides work without having to play both sides. Other than that ONE issue, the game seems pretty good. Given Matrix Games constant updating and improvement process I believe the game will only get better. There is nothing wrong that I see that would have been found by further Beta but rather I expect improvements that will only be the result of a stronger user community which their forums provide. Great to see a game about WW1, there should be more of them! The game simulates the trenches in the west front quite good. My germans managed to take Calais but then ran into a solid line of french and british. Now have to deal with Russians in the east!

Awful visuals and sound. Awkward AI system that isn't actually very smart. Quirks with inventory management and commands. Also, the campaign doesn't feel nearly as realistic as the games it attempts to mimic. Not recommended

I hate this game. It already started with the download....so slow and had to restart it numerous times, after I installed it (the easy part) and installed it....poof...my first crash. Restarted it again and everything was ok. Played the game (man, those graphics are ugly) and was totally unimpressed with the AI. I play many Paradox games, but still.... The game play is predictable....the tech upgrade is quite linear, maps incorrect and lots of things historically incorrect. Needless to say that I'm not impressed, back to playing Crusader Kings II again. Expand

A very good game of moderate complexity for the TBS fan. AI is pretty good. Fair replay value. A war little known today with interesting challenges. I've been playing war games since the 1960's and computer games since the 80's. This is a game that I am enjoying a lot and hope the engine can be used for future WW2 and perhaps Cold War games. The naval war representation is less convincing than the ground war aspect of the game. It could use some imaginative attention to make it more interesting and representative of the first U-boat war.
The ground war aspect is fulfilling and fun. I'd say that the game would be a good introduction to turn based war games since it can be played fairly quickly and the rules are not so involved as other grand strategy titles in the genre, e.g. Gary Grigsby's War in the East and Pacific War monster computer games that have require a major investment in time and study to play well.
I hope there is some follow up by the developers to continue to improve the game's balance and AI; I would also like to see what modders can do with it.
I do feel I am getting my money's worth and recommend it.

Excellent implementation of grand strategy. It successfully simulates the slog of trench warfare stalemate (on the Western Front) and the dynamics in other theatres. Extremely strong AI, robust and intuitive MP system via PBEM++, gorgeous graphics for a wargame (best I've yet seen), easy to get into but ultimately looks very deep. An extremely satisfactory purchase for any turn-based strategy fan.

I note that many of the "1" reviews here are SPAM, they are not even referring to features in the main game. I don't know why people would want to troll Lordz/Slitherine/Matrix, but it is very disappointing. They should be removed by Metacritic admins, and failing that, ignored by the serious buyer.

What a lot of developer employees and forum members giving it a 10....sigh
It's an ok game, not as good at Panzer Corps, but bad than the previous commander. Just the fact that you can now set the proper resolution makes a huge difference, plus the game performs better. What bothers me though is how the developers are encouraging people on their forum to vote for them, which is the reason
why suddenly saw so many 10 scores everywhere, even their own employees are voting. A game should be rated for what it's worth and not be a rating just to please the developers. I can fully understand why others rate it low on purpose to compensate for these foolish 10 scores, because while it's a good game, it's most certainly not worth a 10, more like an 8 with a chance to grow towards an 8.5 or even a 9. A beautifully playable, awesomely open-ended game focusing on a much neglected part of history where the emphasis is most definitely on 'what if'. If you're a fan of Paradox's Hearts of Iron series you'll love this.

I was looking forward to a ww1 game and I thought this may quench my thirst, but BOY WAS I WRONG! The diplomacy of this game is broken, production is limited to basic units that are too generic. The development of the technology and research system required little thought whatsoever, and the game lacks even the slightest amount of depth that would be seen as complimentary in a game of this type. Simply put, a disappointment of the largest magnitude. Expand

Really enjoyabe in a seldom used niche. Frank Hunters Guns of August is better on land but not naval. This uses that dreaded Commander factor of ten for units. Historical, simuulates well the static trench warfare. Worth the $35.
