This is possibly the funnest game i have ever played due the casual violence, hilarious AI and brilliant one liners the enemies come out with the best being "HEY PAL!" Black guard "DEFILLER" Necromancer and "ABOMINATION" Orc when you get the game or if you have it you will know why it is so funny. Other hilarious components include spazzing corpes, people slipping on ice (especially off cliffs) and of course pinning a orc to a swinging ham if you find this it will make your day (i was in stiches). The AI on this game is incredible if you kick a enemy down the stairs he runs straight back up for more! oh yes and this game has a rich combat and skill upgrade system (btw avoid poison resistance) a very good game buy it now! This is one of those games where you just have to scratch your head and try to comprehend what most of the negative reviewers are thinking. If you like FUN, this is a games that has loads of outright fun. I have played the game all the way through three different times (as each of the different classes) and enjoyed it immensely each time. The game is so cheap to buy now, I don't see how anyone could not see the value here. If you like action RPGs you really cannot go wrong with this game!!! Expand

Dark Messiah: Of Might and Magic. This adaptation of the Source engine, developed by Arkane Studios, is a classic example of a good game that could have been so much more. You take on the role of Sareth, apprentice of the Wizard Phenrig, who is initially tasked with delivering a strange crystal to another wizard, who is in search of the "Skull of Shadows". However, as the story progresses, you find yourself entangled in an ancient prophecy that could potentially end the world. This game plays remarkable similar to another Arkane Studios game, Arx Fatalis; so if you liked that game, you can stop reading this review right here because you'll like this game as well. The enviromnents themselves are actually pretty good, even for a game released in 2006. Combat is fast paced and varies greatly depending on whatever weapon types you decide to use. There is a basic skill progression system that allows you to decide what Sareth can do both in and out of combat. With it, you CAN progress down the basic archetypes (Warrior, mage, rogue) or you can mix and match to fit your style. My personal preference is mage; I don't understand why people think it's so weak. Admitedly, it starts out somewhat underpowered, but mid-late game, it becomes unstoppable (Sanctuary FTW). The voice acting is passable and at times is funny and I found myself chuckling more than once. However, this game does come with some serious drawbacks that limit an otherwise flawless game. First off, the game is just too short and while it does a fair job of making you feel like part of the game, the fast pace of the game often leaves you behind. Second, the enemy AI ranges from overly brilliant, to just plain stupid (They can find me hiding in a corner 100 feet away, but they can't think of any other way to attack me besides charging into my kick.). Finally, the limited weapon variety pretty much tells you what weapons you'll be using. Ultimatly though, for its price, this is a fair buy for RPG fans, and they won't be dissapointed. Expand

Actaully it is hard to evaluate this game with DEMO version because of short playing time. By the way, there is a thing that i want to emphasize- The (advanced) source engine has proven its potentials again with impressive visuals, pleasant sounds and proper effects. Moreover, as you know, the engine presents high-quality even though the running system is not a quite fitting for 3d games. (though I tested DEMO on my low-end notebook, it worked great at maximum widescreen resolution/high settings. I couldn't even see shadows in F.E.A.R with the same machine and had to run that 'pathatic mode') Expand

This is no game, it's a masterpiece! By introducing an absolute "clear-cut" combat system, brilliant visuals and innovative multiplayer, DM:MM dominates the majority of other similar (RPG and FPS) games. It redefines the whole aspect of visual warfare and kicks the famous Oblivion game off its throne. All hail to the new king, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

I've never been so happy to play a demo before. The entire experience is emersive and challenging. I especially like the the skills you can acquire by just selecting the tab button. It brings up the points you've earned and you can choose the skills for your player. I hope that there are more types of characters btw.

After playing the demo thoroughly, I really enjoyed this game a lot. It's the standard "Start with a regular character and customize them to your playing style". Create a warrior, rougue, mage or combination. The beautiful and interactive environment is just a great thing to behold. Combat is also highly interactive. Fight / swing swords - fine, that's standard. Drop a barrel on a goblin's head. Hmm... Kick your enemy over a cliff or shove them into a spiked wall. Nice... Expand

This game gets a 1 because the demo was fun. Saying that, I can't even get as far into the game as the demo let me progress...it crashes right after the tutorial. I spent 50 dollars to play a game for 10 minutes and to have it crash everytime it loads up the first level after the tutorial, this is garbage. I went to the Dark Messiah forums only to discover that there are over 200 posts with over 20,000 views of this exact same issue and that a patch is in the works. Bugs this bad should be worked out in advance of a major release, this is unacceptable and although they are working on a patch for this issue, I should have been able to save my 50 bucks until I could play the game in whole, not a ten minute teaser. This game is a more enjoyable experience in some way than other games such as Oblivion & Even Half-Life 2 but is let down by some serious flaws. The game is buggy on most systems I've played it on & even those PC that are exceeding the recommended specs & needs extensive tweaking to get it to work - despite the new patch thats been released for it to fix a long list of problems. You might have just bought this game from watching the trailers over the last 18 months while in development and the amazing use the game has put the legendary Source engine to good use. You will have to get used to using the kick key alot for all those high drops to kick the enemies off. Every time you attack an enemy your adreline bar goes up a bit further to execute 'death' kills that will slow the game down and instantly kill your unlucky victim. Through each of the tasks you will complete (some are optionally) you will get skill points to use to advance yourself so you get additional skills like more strength, stamina, become invisible or be a wizard of spells. The physic/ragdolls are over the top and can look like the game hasn't been fully tested and the amount of convient spikes & fires around every corner is suspect and doesn't leave much room for a creative kill. The annoying 'voice' in your head will guide/tell you what to do and its like a bad example of a TomTom GPS nagging every 5 seconds but she does keep her mouth shut for some bits of the game. If they fix the bugs so most people can play the game without re-tweaking the game then this would easily get 9/10, but it stays 6/10. Don't play this game until you've played the very short demo otherwise you might waste you money on a game that might even crash your PC. Expand

A game infameous for it's buggy launch furthur complicated by the use of Sony's Securom technology that made the game unplayable by many legitimate owners. Well advised to stay clear of this stinker until it actually works. Check ubi forums every once in a while until people stop complaining. Then maybe give it a go. Expand

The first thing that I liked was the 1st person sword fighting which actually is good, unlike Oblivions fucked up system. The 2nd thing was the gore that made me keep on playing. I still laugh out loud when I behead a guard and throw his body onto another enemy making him fall and then execute him on the ground. Or just burning them to death. Or kicking them off cliffs and into spikes. Oh, and the game neither crashed nor have I experienced one singel bug. I don't know what everyone is whining about...:) I'v beaten the game six times now in the past five days, 3xwarrior, 2xassassian, 1xmage (<-- mage to hard in endgame in my opinion) Expand

Minor problems and bugs cannot hide this game's brilliance. I was kind of disappointed at the beginning to the point of almost abandoning it but then it really grew on me. The hand to hand combat system and body awareness combined with Source's physics engine creates a really unique experience where you can feel the blows you deal and the hits you take from enemies as much as a game can convey. And it gets 10/10 because it has catacombs. I love games with spooky tombs and traps ... :) Expand

I wonderful game. Well scripted single player missions, you feel as if your character is part of an epic story (It's like playing an interactive movie). Though this does remove the freedom found on Oblivion. But I don't think that is what this game wants to do. Compare it to Doom, HL2 etc and this game is worth every cent. The graphics are great, there is a great sense of scale. You feel very small standing next to a castle wall, this is something that other games don't too well. Hardware recommendation are high though to help fully immerse yourself. But well worth the cost to upgrade. Castles look great with HDR rendering. Expand

Obviously this title seems to be a "love-or-hate" kind of game: Some like the refreshingly different gameplay, some just don't seem to get it. I have to give this game a ten just to balance the unfairly poor scores it has got! I can't understand any of the issues mentioned in the bad reviews, I haven't encountered any bugs and the combat system is truly revolutionary, not repetitive and dull as some have said. Expand

There is certainly no graphical glitches in my game and I play it on a 5 year old computer. I have pleayed it through four times (not that hard since its not so long, which btw is the major flaw of the game) and even on hard its doable to kill your enemies without restoring to kicking etc as I read some critics have written. If they cannot see how you can successfully create a mage/warrior that kill every opponent it is their problem, but then they also havent seen the potential the game really has. Expand

The game is fun, although the voice acting is sometimes poorly done and the plot is as see-through as a thin sheet of greasy paper. I just bought this game and, like many of you, was having a big problem just running it. Now, I, completely understand the need for copyright protection... after all, these people work too hard to produce these games, only to have them pirated. This so- called protection should no way infringe on your ability to play these games. What I find to be inexcusable, is UBISOFT releasing a game before ensuring that it is , reasonably, bug free. I had a problem that was a result of the copyright protection conflicting with my DVD rom ( driver software). Why was this major problem not resolved before shipping? Waiting for a patch, for me, is an afterthought, that is simply, not acceptable. I feel that these problems could have been avoided, had this product been thoroughly tested before it's release.Everyone makes mistakes but when they are done consistently, one has to wonder what is UBISOFT hoping to prove by releasing glitched and sub par products.Because of this, I have, reluctantly, sold my copy of Dark Messiah after many frustrating hours, unsuccessfully trying to get it to work and am sad to say that I wll never purchase another UBISOFT product, unless these big copyright protection problems are resolved. Awesome. I rate up there with Oblivion, and although I am only in the 2nd part of the game, this game is really damn good. My only issues are it seems pretty linear so far..(where as in Oblivion, you don't HAVE to participate to advance,) but then again maybe I just need to get farther..(I just want to find some kind of a merchant so I can sell all these damned Blackguard shields I have ...lol) It runs great on my older Radeon 9550, which is great if you don't have the funds for the newest graphics card, but it can be adjusted to some of the higher settings, so when I do get a better one, I can crank it up and check it out. Great follow up on a well traveled series...(I remember when this game was available for the commodore 64 back in the 80's......yup yup.) It's good to see them keep up with the times. Expand

Must say that I was somewhat sceptical towards this game at first, but deciced to buy it anyway. Luckily the game turned out to be really entertaining. It's not free, vast and doesn't have a deep storytelling element, but as a lightweigth action/adventureRPG it's a winner. I enjoyed Oblivion immensely and Gothic 3 keeps entertaining me, but at times they're exhaustingly open and there's way too much to do. Dark Messiah keeps it small and focused, which is an excellent option to the large games. The graphics are excellent and the game runs on full detail with no mentionable stuttering. Gameplay is great and so far I haven't encountered any bugs. Thoroughly enjoyable game. If you're into rpg/action adventures I'd suggest you try the game. Only thing keeping the game away from a 10 is that from what I've heared the game could be a tad longer. Expand

The game is remarkable. It keeps you on the edge of your seat like no other. Oblivion? What's Oblivion? Dark Messiah is atleast MULTIPLAYER. The singleplayer campaign isn't like Oblivion however, but to think that if it did, everyone would say "Oblivi-who?"

Great game. Though very linear, this game is beautiful and really fun to play. I have a dell XPS m1210 laptop, 1.83ghz,1gig ram,256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400. I'm running it at the lowest resolution and had to adjust some shading aspects, but it runs and looks fantastic now. Had some sound issues but fixed that by going on the Steam forums. If I would have been unable to install it or get it to run correctly I wouldnt be playing it, therefore I wouldnt have bothered giving a review based on my anger at not being able to play it. Hate to sound arrogant, but if your system is incapable of installing this game, you should think about upgrading, getting a new system or just stick to console gaming. PC gaming is inherently more involved and requires a bit of research and the understanding that the game you pick might not turn out the way you want. Stop blaming it on the game maker. Expand

Dark Messsiah of M&M is a leap up from games of this type. The first person combat is some the best ever. The world it bring to life is brilliant. And adventure pulls you in again and again.

after trying the demo provided me from steam/valve,i was waiting the release of the game with impatience...and on 11/1/2006 i bought it....to discover that i bought a beta version?!?!i know it is not beta, but definitly acts like that:elements and creatures dissapearing, and i was falling from highs or killed by"invisible" enemies....get stuck in walls couple times, fast save(F6) not warking all the time...dissapearing icons from the screan,or worse, showing up like molticolour squares?!?!,and this i just the easy part...How about the blou screens or dead comp, reboots or, internall errors, wrong allocation tables.....the magic(night)vision was much better on the demo.... I am really dissapointed.. my comp is :amd64 3000+,ati radeon 9600 128mb agp,2g RAM,250G HD,windows xp proffessional,up to date!!! i still can't get it?!?! oh and multiplayer choise on the menu is kicking the game to quit right away!why? For casual gamer-It's fun. For hardcore gamer-It's fun but it didn't last long.(For single player of course). You'll be wondering why did you do the same thing over and over again.I believe if you want a really good game that using the HL2 Engine,I recommend you the 'Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines'.This game single player mode last longer because of it's great replayability and it's better. Horrible. This game was so completly dead on arrival they day it was released it is unbelievable. 90% of people couldnt play it at release. The recent 1.01 patch fixed the game for maybe 10%. Might as well called all of us suckers beta testers. Shame on the developers of this game. Don't waste a hard earned 50 bucks on this!

The physical game play is great, but there is quite limited spell/skill selection, and only a spattering of different items. I think I was expecting more complex choice of skills/spells and alot more variety of items.

Really bad launch. Should have been tested more before release. Graphics are nice and certain things you can do in the game will make you sit back and think to yourself. "That was cool." Keeps you playing. Not that long though. Seems to rush you through the game. Fun game. Not sure it was worth $50 bucks.

This game is absolute crap. Even if you accept that this ISN'T a might and magic game it runs like crap, the game play is repetitive, and they made some horrible "class" choices that make no sense. Give this game the boot and save your money. Buy oblivion... gothic 3 maybe... anything but this stinker.

This game had so much potential. Too bad that near the end it wasn't the final fight I was fighting, but repeated crashes and MM.exe bug errors that constantly, consistently bombarded me. I give this game the worst rating. Not only did it bug the hell out of me (pun intended), it also deeply disappointed me. Next time you want to charge $50 for a game - ensure it actually runs like a $50 game. Pathetic. Expand

If you're a die-hard M&M fan, beware. This is nothing like the old Might & Magic series. I was sorely disappointed to see there was no grand map with cities that I could freely explore, buy supplies in, etc. That said, for the type of game it is, it is nice. The ability to behead an opponent (easily when stunned, try the lightning shield...) is nice, and the graphics are great. The story does move too quickly at times, and there are some very frustrating moments when trying to jump up to new platforms, or out of the water. I do like the use of the rope bow though. =) I'm obviously one of the lucky ones that has a system it only crashes on 33% of the time, and even then, only after playing for a reasonably long time. I can't imagine how mad I'd be if I felt like a "beta tester" like so many others have. That's just B.S. and UBI should be careful... if they do this enough they'll face a class action suit that will set them back far more than a small Q&A dept. All that said, I am still very mad that the old Might & Magic is gone. Granted the last several stunk (X was the worst, with so many bugs it was almost impossible to finish) but still, they held true to the series creating a world for you to explore. All in all, if the game had stayed true to the old Might & Magic theme, I would have given it a 7, and from there, easily a 10 if they'd not released a beta. Expand

Another beta version game released to retail by UbiSoft without sufficient fixes. Minimum Req. are understated you can not run the game with the min requirements met. Patches are too long in coming out. The game is over 6 weeks out and only one patch out and it needs at least 2 more but knowing UbiSoft you will never see them. Arkane Studios made a bad mistake teaming with Ubisoft !

This game fulfills many aspects of gaming that I really enjoy: solving easy little puzzles, first person pace and energy, and swords + magic. You just can't go wrong. It brings back fond memories of Hexen and Heretic. It's nice to see a FPS of this genre built on such a good gaming engine and not trying to combine itself with an RPG to any extent that it bogs everything down. I only give it 10 to help raise the average. Realistically, it's a 9.2 Expand

It scores higher than 0 due to the marvelous fighting system. This system should just have been imported into a better game with more depth, better storyline and more diversity. Hopefully some developpers might use this fighting system again. Bonus of the game thou are the constant crashes that tottaly make you loose the feeling of being on an adventure. It just ruins the thrill of the ride. And I might mention that i run with nvidia 7900gtx in SLI and 2 gig of ram and top notch processor. But still i suffer from constant crashing. Sad such a good idea hasnt been worked on more. Fighting system only + Expand

To be honest, I always took a much greater interest in the multiplayer portion of Dark Messiah rather than its single player brethren. Developed by Kuju Entertainment, the company responsible for helping develop the EyeToy games for the PS2, the multiplayer mode for Call of Duty: Finest Hour, and Battalion Wars for the Nintendo Gamecube, the multiplayer mode of Dark Messiah encompasses a unique style of gameplay in a fantasy setting. The game splits between 2 factions, the Humans and the Undead. Each faction allows 5 playable classes, the Assassin, the Priestess, the Mage, the Archer, and the Warrior. The only difference between the Humans and the Undead is their physical appearance; otherwise, they are essentially the same. Now the question is, how does the multiplayer stack up? Pretty nicely, and I won’t stop there. Despite some slight conflicts of class balance, the multiplayer portion of the game leads as an excellent and worthy contender of popular multiplayer first person shooters. To begin with, the Assassin is a very fast paced and fun-to-play class. In fact, all classes are extremely fun to play, and it will only get better as Kuju decides what should be done to help make the game even better. (And they do, their commitment to the Open Beta was extraordinary, as far as updates and forum responses go). The Warrior is a tanker lover’s dream, being able to negate any spells and absorbing the most damage with its Reinforced Armor. Surprisingly, the Warrior’s attacks are powerful as well. The Priestess is most likely the main concern of many balance critics. With her instant self-heal ability and an armor buff that lowers any kind of damage, the Priestess can take on any class and win. I haven’t even mentioned the insane range of her Corrupt ability and the Bramble spell that slows ALL players to a crawl. Kuju Entertainment obviously decided that Priestesses should do more than just supporting other classes. The Mage is insanely powerful as well, but only in late levels. Finally, the Archer is a class that rewards those with practice; arrows not only take time to reach the target, but they also arc as well. However, 1 fully charged shot deals 56 damage; 2 shots will kill the player. In conclusion, the multiplayer portion of Dark Messiah is anything but the norm. It features a retrospective view of the modern first person shooter with 5 totally different playable classes. The game delivers tons of different tactical strategies, and will only get better as Kuju Entertainment continues to please its fans with updates and additions to the game. Expand

1. There's really nothing that can match Dark Messiah's combat. The mixture of weaponry and convincingly cause-and-effect physics really does take first-person fighting to new places. [Nov 2006, p.62]
2. If the game suffers, it's from over-explanation, the occasional lapse in the combat, and the repetitive nature of the environmental weaponry. But I was kept entertained all the way through, and I've never felt so directy responsible for chopping off a goblin's arm. [Dec 2006, p.70]
3. An outstanding experience. It manages to create a constant sense of threat, includes some stunning set-pieces, and introduces a cast of breathtaking beasts, all within a combat system that is one of the most versatile and violent we have ever seen. [Dec 2006, p.98]
