  • Summary: Day of Defeat: Source features multiplayer, team-based gameplay set in the WWII European theatre of operations. Players choose a role and tackle goal-oriented missions based on historical operations. Day of Defeat: Source takes the classic gameplay of the original Day of Defeat and improves the experience with Source, the advanced engine technology Valve created for "Half-Life 2." With this technology, DoD: Source offers state of the art graphics (including support for HDR lighting) in optimized versions of popular maps, plus redesigned sound and all new player, weapon, and world models. New features include: Completely updated maps to take full advantage of the Source engine replaces, integrated physics simulation for ragdolls and physically simulated objects, higher resolution textures throughout, bump mapping, specular lighting, and other graphic effects, all powered by advanced Source engine technology, completely redesigned user interface, all new voice, weapon, and ambient sounds. 1. Hearing bullets wiz past your head as you hear the crackle of machine gun fire in the background is something that I have yet to experience in any game.
  2. Just as enjoyable and as addictive as it has been in previous versions, and hopefully in time, new updates and maps should bring in a new generation of Day of Defeat fanatics.
  3. I think the new DoD has done the best job of utilizing the Source physics engine.
  4. Sound is what makes this game unique however. You’re made very aware of gunshots almost everywhere to varying degrees of loudness.
  5. In terms of scale, it barely comes up to Battlefield's ankles, and in terms of tactics and tension it can't beat Counter-Strike, but once you've spent a few hours on a server of 20 or so people, you'd have to want not to enjoy it to fail to - and your own war stories are an inevitable byproduct.
  6. Great fun, but tough to recommend until more maps are available. [Holiday 2005, p.72]

Taken with the limitations of only four maps, on which to play one game type, all too soon you can find yourself in a mechanical rut playing them over and over. And that's something that the original didn't suffer from.

Great game. I can sit for hours playing this. Its not boring like CS because you don't have to wait long when you die, and the graphics and physics ROCK! I have bought the package: CS:S, DoD:S and DM:S. I just play DoD:S now because it's the best of the three. Expand

I'll never go playing a other game. Not expensive and you can go online 24/7 and play and play. If you are tired of playing the in same towns just look for custom maps. Expand

It uses the source engine really well. Although there are not many maps initially included, many people seem to prefer custom maps. There are virtually no glitches and it reuns smoothly. The classes and weapons have been tweaked for just the right settings. The only thing that makes it lose a point is the hud, which is way too big and bulky. With a few touch ups and GUIs from fpsbanana, this game will be worth your 20$ Expand
