Easily a 10/10. I went in thinking that it would be horrible like Half-Life: Source. I played the original game first and I loved it. When I tried this version, I knew it was better than the original. The bad things in the original were the UI and jumping taking up most of your stamina. This fixed those and had better graphics. Best WWII multiplayer game.
Perfect Game teamplay & ambiance, lovely community, great shooter! There are beautiful communitymaps out there, skins and mods like in CSS. You need to play it more than 2h to get a real impression of the game.
While the game still needs some patching, and is unfortunately not DoD as we know it, this is still an absolutely fantastic package; those after a new multiplayer shooter can’t really go wrong with this one. Oh, and expect this score to go up over time as Valve patches out various problems.
Yes, yes, no doubt Valve will release more maps soon and the community is already churning new content out, but are we expected to pay for an updated mod that was free which offers less content than the original but that’s supposed to be ok because the community will fix it? Huh? That’s logic I can't wrap my head around.
Taken with the limitations of only four maps, on which to play one game type, all too soon you can find yourself in a mechanical rut playing them over and over. And that's something that the original didn't suffer from.
I like the fast gameplay and the unique weapon rebound in this game! Compared to other ww2 games (like cod) dods requires a bit more skill to aim right.
Hope that Valve bring out a new DOD when they release HL3.
Still a fun deathmatch game but the Source upgrade was not necessary.
I liked Day of Defeat on its own. It is a Deathmatch Classic or Half-Life Deathmatch reskin, set in a World War II setting. It is fast paced, responds well and can be fun to play.
You connect to a server, choose your side and join the action. You can play two game modes: Detonation and Territorial control. With Detonation, you need to plant explosives on the enemy structures and blow them up. With Territorial Control, you need to capture strategic points, dominating the map eventually. You can choose various classes, each with their own loadouts, abilities and purpose. This way, a team can consists of various specialists which gives the game a more realistic feel when playing.
The action can be intense and the overall multiplayer feeling is stronger than ever with this game. It can be compared to games like Counterstrike and Half-Life.
The graphics are upgraded in the Source version, and although nice, it feels a little pointless when you keep the rest of the game in mind. This upgrade mainly served as some sort of tech demo, in which the developers wanted to show of the capabilities of their upgraded engine. This is fine of course, but it does not make the game any better because of the lack of content, that is still present here.
Sound effects are really nice. Gunfire from Kar98 rifles and machine guns feel on point and give a nice feedback in your ears. For me, sound is important when playing WWII themed games to get me into the action.
Control wise, Day of Defeat plays smooth, easy and fast paced. Aiming, shooting, running around, it all feels natural and responsive. Nothing to complain here.
The only problem I had with Day of Defeat, and with this Source upgrade, is that it is simply not unique or innovative enough. There are hundreds of games out there in the WWII genre, with larger player bases, more content and more replay ability. It also does not help that this Source remake did add nothing to the game, except some fancy graphics.
So although Day of Defeat: Source was fun, and there is nothing wrong with it, it just is not memorable and special enough for me to play for longer periods of time. And besides that, I certainly did not need a remake or upgrade of any kind.
If this game were your only option for some reason however, I would definitely recommend it.

This game is horrible, unlike what everyone says under me, the graphics do not fit the time at all, the weapons do not handle like the should (aka the STG44). All people do in this game is camp in corners, so it is the exact same thing as CoD2. The load times for custom maps is horrible, if you are lucky enough to get in fast enough you'll be able to grab a unique class (such as MG gunner or sniper which the max amount of players is always 1 or 2) not worth more than 5 dollars at most, spend your money on a real WWII experience, like Red Orchestra.
