This is really an amazing continuation of the first Gothic game. It has pretty much everything what Gothic 1 had plus many improvements. The graphics look better now. Fighting is similar yet got some technical improvements which make it even more enjoyable now. The world is bigger, and the areas we get to explore are really interesting to see. We even get back to the colony from the first Gothic, although much has changed there. What I complained about in my review for Gothic 1, is also fixed here. I mean, side quests. With each chapter we will encounter new side quests. Overall there are many in game. Also, the game is more difficult than Gothic 1, especially if we also have Gothic 2: Night of the Raven expansion. This expansion is really worth the money, because it not only adds whole new world to explore, but also makes the game more difficult. Also, changes and adds stuff to the original world from Gothic 2, too. Gothic 2 + Gothic 2: NOTR expansion make the most awesome RPG ever made in my opinion. The storyline is still linear yet we still make some choices here and there. Yet again we get to pick which faction we join, and this affects the game more than it did in the first Gothic game. Even the NPCs will treat us differently. We get to choose between the monastery of fire magicians, mercenaries, and town militia. Further in the game we advance to higher rank, depending which faction we chose. Story line is still amazing and I don't have much more to say to it. Music is better than in the previous game. Not a single bad word I can say to it. If I was reviewing Gothic 2 alone, I would give it 9, but together with G2: NOTR they make purely epic game which is almost flawless. Sometimes we can encounter some bugs but really rarely. We were able to forge weapons in Gothic 1 but in Gothic 2 now we can learn to forge various types of swords. We are able to learn alchemy and brew potions, too. We even need to create runes as a mage in order to be able to use new spells. Let me do a summary. Pros: -Everything that was in first Gothic 1, plus many fixes and improvements to the game. Cons: -Linear storyline. Expand

Can someone explain why nobody who gave a negative rating, could be arsed to actually write a review? Few words at least? Care to explain why hate it so much? No? I suppose those are trolls and probably multi-accounts, and not real players. This game is brilliant and deserves 9/10 (but i give 10 to counter those trolls), its one of best RPGs i've played, even to this day, and a big part of my childhood. Expand

Strange thing is: This game had a user rating of about 8.8- 9.2 some months ago! If you look at the reviews you will notice that written reviews are almost all very positive. But there seem to be many people who dislike the game but didnt't tell us why. And believe me: these negative ratings were not there half a year ago. My personal conclusion is: THE RATING IS MANIPULATED by haters/ other developers etc... This makes me sad because Gothic and Gothic II are masterpieces of game experience and one of my favourite games of all time! Expand

This is the best game ever. Although graphics are not up to date it has a very nice story and a fascinating combat system (not this easy click, slay and win). If you have some nights left, get it and play!

The grapics are a bit outdated after 4 years but, while waiting for Gothic 3, I took up the challenge again. The gameplay is superior to all other RPG's. You take up challenges as difficult as you can handle. If something is too difficult for you, you can choose to do a few easier tasks to accomplish your goal. It is very addictive and most of the time impressive.

Since Gothic 2 was not released at the time I wrote this, consider it a pre-rating. Because I know the game engine is basically the same but with more detailed textures and higher res. I know Gothic 2 will rock! The first one is the single best rpg I have ever played. No other real time game has ever come so close to making a world feel so real. I know Gothic 2 will give me more of what I want. Which is simply more of the same! Despite much complaining about the interface for Gothic 1 which was in fact just fine, Gothic 2 will have 2 styles of control. I will be the first kid on my block to own this one! Expand

It's a very intriguing and addictive game which could have been better. It's big with lots of quests although kind of difficult at start. It has nice graphics and music that make a convincing "Gothic" environment. Menus and interaction are too simplistic unlike other rpg's. Overally a very good game for rpg fans.

This game is simply stunning. It's just... It's my favorite game of all time. It has everything. It's story is very involving, and unlike a lot of other RPGs, you really feel that you are living within the world of Gothic 2, making decisions with consequences. Just this will keep you going for hours and hours once you settle after the rather hard and unforgiving opening minutes. Give it 30 minutes to one hour, and you'll be lost in the world of Gothic 2 forever. Expand

One of the best gaming experiences I have ever had and I have played a lot of games. The story is captivating, the game itself is challenging (that refers to Gothic II Gold which includes The Night of the Raven expansion game). The player is free to chose between three completely different classes and that can be done by the most realistic way you can imagine - you actually have to find out what classes there are and fulfil the corresponding quest. You are going to feel your character and you will be lost in the truly beautiful world around him. Expand

It is a wonderful game, really amazing story.. Gothic I - was the first game I installed on pc, since I got it. And after finishing first version, second came, and it's was really cool to install the continuing.. Even better story, esp the night raven add-on. Still it has disadvantages like not perfect quility or some bugs, but I dont care cuz the storymode is awesome, and that's enough for me. Expand

One of the best RPGs ever created. The best thing is: The game is very well balanced. At a point walking around over and over to the same places get annoying you get Runes who can be used to teleport around the Isle of Khorinis. If you are a Germany, you will love the speech..funny indeed.;). Don't believe the mag-bashing above, they wouldn't recognize a good RPG even when the CD has been shoven up their ass. Sorry, but thats reality..most of the mags are bribed by the publishers, so only trust the community. (an example:C&C 3..a bad game that was rated 90% and more because it was published be EA) Expand

While I really don't like rpgs (especially morrowind), I found this one to be quite fun. Most rpgs have a very boring combat system and one has to read pages of text to get an idea of what the story is about. Not gothic. The characters actually speak their lines and, generally, only repeat the important stuff. The combat system, while neither a full fledged fps system nor a typical rpg system, is a nice compromise between the two though it does lean towards the fps side some. Pointing and clicking will simply get you killed in this game. Anyway, rpg fans should like this one and many fps fans will like it also. Give it a try. . . . oh, and it really looks pretty cool. The screenshots don't do it justice. You really need to see it in motion. Expand

Just play Gothic 1 and then continue your experience with the great sequel Gothic 2. Gothic can be played multiple times cause you can choose different paths to finish the game. And every time you play it you will discover new things that you missed at previous play. What can I say? GREAT GAME !!! Buy it ! And wait for the sequel Gothic 3.

One of the deepest and most immersive role playing games I've ever played...and I've played them all. It's like Morrowind...except with a balanced skill tree and a combat engine that's actually FUN, if a bit odd at first. Outside of the Black Isle games, Gothic is as good as it gets. My suspicion is that a lot of the folks who reviewed it poorly either weren't ready for the truly epic (read : slow) pace of the story or were weened on action RPG's. There's no other explanation for why this game is lauded as anything but a classic. Expand

One of the most enjoyable RPGs I've played. Took me hours to complete, but was fun the whole time. One of the very few that was playable without a single patch and with very little fuss at the highest res. As a player you can choose a variety of actions which don't paint you into an in escapable position from which you have to re-start the whole game to make any progress. Don39;t understand why it received such a luke-warm reception from the buying public! Looking foreward to G3! Expand

An absolutely mind-blowingly great game, at least it was for me. At the time I stumbled across this, while bored and looking for a random game to kill time with, I had never experienced such a detailed and cohesive world. This game still highly impresses me, as does its expansion, The Night of the Raven.

Simply the greatest RPG ever made. It's rare to find a game with as much soul and personality as this. The characters, setting, story of gothic 1+2, are memorable even 5 years after playing the game. If you stick past the initial difficulty and learning curve you'll be infinitely rewarded

My personal, all-time favorite RPG. The nostalgia goggles will never come off on this one, and I would pay anything to experience this game again like it was the first time. I could go on for hours about this game... the music (oh god the music!), gameplay, characters, story... it all fits together so perfectly. Buy this game and name your children after NPCs.

Open world RPG masterpiece. One of the best RPGs ever created. Story is really epic, world and characters are so realistic for a fantasy game. Three totally different paths you can take. And game is hard, you need to master your skills, both your character in game and you as a player. Epic is the only word that can describe Gothic 2.

Game itself is still as good as the first one was. We got more great fighting, more great atmopshere, more great open world... But there's something wrong in this game. And it's the story. We didn't experienced such great story twist, we did in first game. Since the beginning we know what to do and how it will end. But still, it's very good game worth any money.

While still using the same basic engine that powered Gothic 1, Gothic II adds a few improvements in lighting, model detail and textures that were lacking in the first. The story is new but the land is somewhat familiar. There are very few bugs, but those that are apparent can be avoided. In addition, Piranha-Bytes offers the option to use a new control scheme, or stick with the familiar system used in the first game. You'll start out in a new land adjacent to that of the first and you will find yourself venturing between the two. Familiar characters make a return in Gothic II and it seems that their presence and influence have far more meaning than they did in the first game. A wonderful new adaptation to the Gothic Universe and if you have played the first, its definitely worth giving up some time to play it!!! 9 out of 10! Expand

One of my favorite games of all time. The wonderfully crafted world had a living feel to it which was years ahead of it's time. With everyone fallowing a daily routine which included even recreational activities. The island world really felt like it could have existed in some world at some time, not artificially constructed like many game environments do.

This is the best game ever, and is even better with Night of The Raven. I have played this game at least 10 times and loves every part of it. Its a perfect mix of amount of linearity and open world. Really good combat, story, dialogs, consequenses of choices, AI, the world is beautiful and lively and the music is fantastic. Choices are not black or white, but something in between or in the eyes of the beholder. No level-scaling, thank you for that! Exploring are interesting and rewarding and the game is extremely involving and engaging (you may forget your wife and your job when playing). That is the only negative thing to say about this game;-) Expand

The second part of Gothic. With a better graphic, a deeper story and the add-on 'Night of the Raven', this game make all things right. The atmosphere is perfect, the characters have their own life and the details around the world are amazing. If you like the first part, you'll love GII.

  1. It is the most captivating game I have played lately.
  2. This game time is artificially prolonged by ridiculous amounts of difficulty. The clunky and unresponsive control scheme is bad enough, but you start so weak that you're forced to do a lot of mindless leveling up before you can do anything interesting.
  3. This game will change what you think about RPGs. The immense world provides hours of gameplay and there are enough different paths to take that the game could be won in any way you want.
