Guns of Icarus is an outstanding example of how a kickstarter project can be the new revolution of PC gaming. The skirmish mode is a brilliant teamplay/deathmatch battle arena and we are waiting for the promising adventure mode.
Despite its visual beauty and impressive execution, limited gameplay and general bugginess hold everything back. This beast has room to grow. When it does, expect great things. For now, a little turbulence makes for a bumpy ride.
The Guns of Icarus Online is simply wonderful Because despite being a game made in 2012 it still looks great! And most of all the devs still updating it! Also It's almost bug free! The game is very fun! The game-play is very good! And last but not lest! The controls are brilliant!
This is the best game I have ever played. No exception. It is not everyone's cup of tea, and most people do not enjoy Guns of Icarus to various reasons, but if you are a competitive person but also like cooperative gaming, than this is the game for you.
There is some fun to be had with this game, and there is definitely a lot of potential given how the game is still evolving even though you can play it now.
It's good to see there are still developers who dare to try something different. Because let's be honest..how many zeppelin sims are out there now? Exactly. Guns of Icarus Online offers a fun concept, working together with some random players on a flying fortress, trying to defend it from other, similar foes. Bugs and lag cause major disappointment however. That's a shame, because the idea is great. Let's hope a great amount of patches will deal with these problems.
Sadly, the truly unique quality of proper airship-to-airship combat can't justify all blemishes that come with Guns of Icarus Online. It would simply be deceitful for this reviewer to say there aren't better, free, and readily accessible alternatives.
Guns of Icarus Online is in every way, shape and form better than its predecessor, but doesn't escape the fact that its gameplay concept won't stay interesting for long. The slow airships and open levels make for limited tactics and slow-paced fights. It isn't bad by any means, but just isn't interesting for long enough.
After all the Call of Dutys, Medal of Honors and Battlefields this is… different and kind of interesting. But nonetheless I don't see enough reasons to spend more time with this steampunk sleeping pill than necessary.
Ok first of all this "meta critic" system seems a bit off. I get that it shows the opinions of critics and the public, great. But why, when 271 people give this game an 80% plus that it's weighed down by the SEVEN critics that give a 60%. Anyway complaining out of the way, this game is AMAZING. I have been playing for well over a year and see no indications of stopping. Let me point out again that the critic reviews are from 2012-13 when the game first came out, this game has improved IMMENSLEY. First of all with a tight-knight community, contact with the devs is easy and updates are meaningful and frequent (except that one "balance changes" ones but whatever the devs are good) anyway the play flow is nice, lots of different ship loadouts to try and experiment with. So much must be tried, it took me well over a few months to become comfortable with the ships and play styles. You must go more in depth to the game to discover what it has in store for players, a whole opinion cannot be based on a 1 month critic trial. (I'm kinda mad at the system if you can't tell XD) but reall 15 dollars is nothing for a game that I play literally every day. I love this game to death and I think it gets a bad rap for being and underdog. I highly encourage anyone to pick up the game and see for themselves, maybe I can even encourage critics to "re-evaluate" and check out what has changed. You know you've found a special game when the devs play every Tuesday and Thursday to get feedback and hang out with their community. A very special game that I recommend strongly to anyone who is willing to invest some hours in a very captivating and fun game.
I've barely gotten to play it for lack of buddies who own it, but Guns of Icarus struck me as an interesting game. The lovely steampunk asthetic combined with a reliance on a unique team synergy for success sets it apart from almost any other First Person game out there. I'd love to dig into it more.
Pros:
-Some of the best multiplayer gameplay mechanics ever, its even better than Left4Dead.
-No pay-to-win, and no level bonuses, so newcomers have same capabilities as veterans.
-A friendly mature community, mostly (at least better than CoD etc.)
-easy to learn, difficult to master.
-epic battles with up to 32 players divided across 8 airships (4v4).
Cons:
-Indie game (low budget feel), with some rough edges.
-How much fun you have depends very much on who you play with - you will meet some totally incompetent players on the same ship as you, who can ruin the fun. Example: 12 year olds who take captain role and don't know how to fly and disconnect the first moment the ship inevitably starts to lose.
-If you like to be able to "go it alone" without relying on others, this game is not for you. Teamwork or die.
-The tutorials for beginners could be better. You will have to learn a lot of things the hard way.
-Dated graphics (but it still "looks and feels good").
-Small player base - only about 200 concurrent gamers in the evening.
-Games often take a long time to start (waiting in lobby for other players to ready up).
A friend recommended this. I had modest expectations and the game has exceeded them.
I used to only play RedOrchestra2 online, but I liked this game enough that I have added it to my regular online gaming diet.
This is a severely underrated game that deserves a much bigger player base. Its great to play with your friends, otherwise its still decent, but not as good.
The GREAT BASTION of A Game !
There is some fun in the actual game-play, but the real fun is in the lobby and during the matches! You will hear all sorts of colorful language especially from the crew to the pilot and pilot to the crew uncensored and RAW! I have heard of pilots causing nubs to almost cry cause they yelled at them constantly for not fixing the hull or the balloon properly. But this is what makes the game so great. You can be your true self. I want to give it more stars but the game play is dead and boring. I got this on special since they released a new DLC that seems to have caused the already small player base to become smaller. What is the point of having a multiplayer game if very few people are online? This game requires thick skin so be prepared, and have fun.
I really love the concept of this game, but the game-play is flawed. The game is simple too plain for three different classes. Every ship can carry 4 people, often a captain, gunner and 2 engineers. I played engineer most of the time, since they need them the most. As an engineer you can have 3 tools, wrench for repairing and rebuilding, buff-hammer and something to put the fire out. You simple running around whacking on the ship-part that needs to be repaired, rebuild, buffed or extinguished. This gets so boring, so fast. The tactics as an engineer is nihil. One engineer repairs one part of the ship the other whacks on the other parts. You can play with all your buddies and fly with multiple ships in deathmatch 2v2 or 3v3, but i can't think of a reason ever recommending this game to a buddy.
