    horrifically underrated game, Hellgate: London is a great game that will provide great fun while playing and provides replay value for the different class types. this game provides an immersive storyline, if sloppily presented. too many people think that visuals and super realistic gameplay mechanics are the most important things in a game nowadays. the game provides great atmosphere if not a bit repetitive, the game does borrow heavily from diablo in the item prefixes and suffixes and upgrade slots and having several randomized maps for each area, and of course always swapping items for better ones and upgrading your character, which is tedious for some, but diablo fans like myself will appreciate it. being able to switch between first and third person gameplay was a nice touch as well. i don't know why the guy below me is complaining about bad interface, i found it very intuitive and smooth. four stars.… Expand

    Terrible story, repetitive game play so bad that you will have experienced the entire game 10 minutes into it. Ugly and repetitive graphics. Badly designed interface (opening inventory or skills or any panel freezes your character in place?) Apparently "the people who made Diablo" only had 1 trick since this is basically plays and looks like a poor Diablo rip off. As of launch its massively buggy as well, and already has a rabid minority willing to defend its honor. Spend your hard earned cash elsewhere.… Expand

    I would give this game around a 9.6. I don't see how you guys are so disappointed with this game. I mean, I am completely hooked, there are some flaws, but they are basic things that can be fixed. The camera views are great in third person and can be moved anywhere that suits your liking, almost completely overhead even. The first person needs a little tweaking however, but is still fun. The core gameplay is, almost exactly, like diablo 2. So many things are borrowed and for me that is great. The guns don't really take away from the diablo 2 feel because they do not work like guns in a normal fps. It is still about the loot and the build. If you liked D2 and you want a great action mmo, get this and play it for a few hours and you will be hooked.… Expand

    A real dissapointment. I'm a massive fan of all things Blizzard and was really expecting a more polished product from the ex-Blizzard guys. Instead, HGL is buggy, slow, patches are a nightmare (I had to manually parse an XML file and download/patch myself after countless attempts at using their rubbish "automated" patching) and thoroughly dissapointing in it's gameplay. Stay away at all costs. I may never buy another title from Bill Roper and the FSS guys because of this. What people are generally saying is true. It needed another year of development before release.… Expand

    I wanted to add to some of the comments already given. Buggy for one, you have to use the console command /stuck when you get stuck (as in you CAN'T FREAKIN' MOVE) which is quite annoying. The atmosphere is OK but too much the same for every level. They tried for variety for came up short. I would rather play 10+ year old Diablo2 or Titan quest than this. A whooping 5 for the attempt. I suggest you go outside and get some fresh air than to play this.… Expand

    When I first started playing Hellgate, I would have given it a 9. But as the game progressed and the repetetive gameplay showed through, my score got lower and lower. The atmosphere is good, but the quests needed more flavor, to many kill x of mob y. The level all start to look the same. The game has its fun moments, but it's not a game that is fun long term, but played in short bursts. Those who enjoyed Diablo II, will find some things to enjoiy here, but don't expect much. The weapon upgrade system is interesting and there are some humerous moments. The final kicker to the score is the subscription cost, I can not see a reason to play the subscription cost at this time, the game just needed more work. There are a few bugs, but in the single-player(I have not tried the multi-player), they are fairly minor.… Expand

    This game sets the standard for MMOs. Although I do not agree with the subscriber plan, I do think that this game is phenomenal. Definitely worth getting, some say it's a Diablo 3. I have to disagree, it has similar features but it's not the same game at all. Furthermore, who cares if it is a Diablo 3? Diablo 1/2 were amazing.

    superb game... i've been playing the beta (yes the NDA has been lifted) and i say this is everything i've hoped for ..and more... and just to CORRECT Greg D who apparently dont really know the game, first yes it's classefied as a mmo just like guild wars and WOW and what you pay for is what you mentioned + monthly updates with new content ... thats a hell of a lot morr then ie. WOW and talknig grafix i'd say it's pretty on par with most new pc games + theres dx10 support not like ...lets say halo 3 which graphicly cant messure up to hl2 which is a 4 YEAR OLD game… Expand

    The story is chopped up to say the least more like half done and although the battle system is fun and entertaining there is pretty much no feel of accomplishment no way to mule items and no variety in builds for the pvp players so overall this game fails on 3 out of four of the main reasons to play an MMO.

    I just installed it and I've been playing it for a bit. Sure it's a little buggy but I just patched it and it seems to work much better now. It's a really good game though it's diablo 3D basically. And just like Diablo it's repetitive mindless killing fun with a weak story. Apparently some of the reviewers have rose colored glass's when comparing it to Diablo 2 because everything wrong they find with HellGate are "problems" that can be found in Diablo 2. It's definitely not epic but it's certainly not a 4 like 1up gave it.… Expand

    This game is incrediably boring. I really liked D2 but am an FPS gamer, so have never really got into WOW; so when the prospect of an MMOFPS came to light, I was really excited. After following the progression of this game for over a year It finally gets released. Oh what a mistake that was. The level design is awful and completly repetitive, the GUI is badly designed, graphics mediocore (yes, on high) and the FPS interface is really, really bad. It's almost like you are using an old ball mouse that sticks, even with a 2000dpi mouse. Really not worth the money, completly avoid.… Expand

    Boring. Totally boring. I've now stopped playing it and didn't even get to the end of Act 2. All the levels look the same, the combat is boring and repetitive, the quests dull... I've been trying to figure out just why I dislike it so much, and I think it comes down to the appalingly bad voice acting (these are the guys who gave us "I sense a soul in search of answers"? Purleeze!) and the monsters have no character. My 9-year-old is playing D2 at the moment and the monster animations and sounds have real character - in H:L they just don't. Just dull dull dull. I don't know how long it took Flagship to make this but it was time wasted. As for subscribing - I don't feel like I even got my money's worth from the boxed version. Really piss poor.… Expand

    This game is below mediocre, even nearly seven months after release. Bugs still persist, standard quality MMO features are just now coming in, and the gap between subs and non-subs continues to increase. Couple that with half the foot-in-mouth slip ups and the recent downfall of HanbitSoft's support of Hellgate in the SEA region, and I think we can all safely say the damage this game has done is complete--as long as you don't fall the victim to paying another cent for it.… Expand

    Give the game some time and it will grow on you. All of the classes are unique in their playstyle. It feels like playing a different game with each of the classes. The graphics scale with the level of your machine(Radeon 9x series all the way to the Geforce 8X00 Series and DX 10 support), so people talking about poor graphics just don't have the machine to play it on high. Also, although nobody likes to pay, I feel that the monthly fee is justified. I look back at Diablo 1 and 2, and you know what ruined those games? Cheaters. If I had the option to pay monthly for those games, I would, as long as it provides a secure online community. All in all, this is an excellent game, and I feel that you should play every class before judging the game. Once you find the playstyle that fits you, then this game will grow on you and you will love it.… Expand

    Great fundamental concept (since it's the Diablo concept) but execution completely fails in every facet: network connectivity, user interface, variety in locations monsters and NPCs, and community relations. Sorry Bill, try again.

    Extremely disappointing, and a real waste of time for Flagship. I've played since the alpha and this game has seen a few improvements since then but is fundamentally the same -- i.e. not-so-good. The wacky humor, the lifeless/repetitive environments, the forgettable story and NPCs, and the overall rush-job production values make this a vast disappointment. It's fun for the first 4-5 hours, but once you realize that the game never really changes, it's a huge turnoff. This is coming from a 4+ year veteran of Diablo 2...I was willing to overlook a lot of flaps in HGL, but not this many.… Expand

    Rushed out the door. There is a huge memory leak, the gameplay is good but very repetitive over-time. I would sit and wait 3-6 months before buying this title.

    This game is very entertaining. Though not as good as Diablo, this game manages to pry my attention from Half-Life 2, Neverwinter Nights 2 and BioShock for a while.

    I am looking at this game with a critical eye and I just want to say that I understand this is a new game so it should have a few bugs. With that aside this game is terrible. The dialouge is decent but the wa it is presented with endless clicking just to view 1 sentence is ridiculous. This game has more bugs then a antfarm. I have a awesome gaming rig i bought expressly to play this game because pc gamer was all over this title until it came out. I was hyped for almost a year. This piece of junk is going directly to ebay. ill sell it for 5.00 if someone will take it. Dont buy into the hype. To many bugs,high system specs,lots of tweaking to get it to work and it will still terminate the application after 30 minutes of play. Also there are areas of the game that you just get physically stuck in. As in cant move. Also EA has terrible support as well afor most of their new releases. I am hesitant to play crysis now because of this steamy turd.… Expand

    Such a disappointment. So many core gameplay issues from not knowing how much damage your character causes to not being able to split stacks to one of the worst UIs I've ever seen to absolutely no story whatsoever. Expected this to be the next Diablo 2. Now I think it has a ways to go before it becomes the next Titan Quest.

    Why this game is getting 10s is beyond me. The gameplay is fairly fun, and I enjoy the art style, but the game feels extremely "beta". There's tons of bugs (crashes, graphical glitches (I'm invisible and in the floor with a gun! Whoo!), lack of proper clipping, etc.) and the graphics look like they're 4 years old at best. The textures and modeling on the guns are extremely disappointing and look like something from Quake 2 at times. Oh, yeah, and the completely unjustifiable $10 a month subscription just to get content that should be part of the purchase of the game in the first place. A terrible shame.… Expand

The game is so dull and lifeless, with the technology available these days this could have been so much more, but it just isnt. I really cannot see where the effort has been put, because it certainly isnt in the game. Maybe they were too busy rubbing their hands together over their subscription system.     I just played this game and turned it off. . I have never seen such horrible graphics for a video game for this time. .I was all hyped when i saw the starting video but once I played the game, the graphics reminded me of Doom, so linear, the character details are horrible. . . Then again I just started playing Clive Barker Jericho. . I cant compare . See for your self.

    This game is not perfect. This game has bugs. What you need to ask yourself, is do these things ruin your fun? For me, they don't. Sure, sometimes in a station you get randomly teleported to the center. So what? The station is small and it takes you all of, literally, 5 seconds to get back to where you were. Sometimes you get stuck between objects during adventures. There's an unstuck command, use it. It happens. It happened in WoW and other games, it'll happen here, too. Other than that, the game is just mindless fun, much like D1 and D2. The story could use improvement, but there's good times there as well. Techsmith 314's dialogue was extremely funny, for example. This game was rushed, there's no doubting that, but Hellgate London restores something to video games that hasn't been there for awhile now: Simple, bloody fun. Do you remember how much honest to goodness fun it was to crawl through a dungeon with your buddies on D2? It's the same thing here, and despite all the flaws that marr this wonderful game's visage, I give it a 10. I give it a 10 because I enjoy myself when I play this game. I give it a 10 because despite the flaws, the game still shines. I give it a 10 because it's something new and innovative, something we haven't seen rehashed a hundred times already. Hellgate London is worth your time, whether you plan to be a Founder or not, it's worth a buy.… Expand

    LOL at fanbois giving 10 perfect rating. I will give it a 0 to balance up the rating abit. Its a DECENT game. But when you look pass its graphics and random loots, this game has nothing to offer. This game deserves a 10 if it was released 10years ago. My biggest grip with this game is its skill trees. PLEASE, one pathetic tree for each classes? I almost cry when i played the game. Now everyone in Hellgate is a clone of each other. There is hardly any char customization other than loot.… Expand

    Lots of annoying bugs, and few actually that prevent you to follow the main storyline in the single player campaign. I've personnaly never see this in any game, and I've never been stuck and forced to wait a patch to continue a game, which is , finally, very frustrating. It can be a good game, but the bugs, that seem to extend in time with no fix, will kill it very fast.

    GAme is addictive with amazing graphics and gear. The devs are patching any issues and adding content pretty regularly. The bugs are becoming lesss and less of an issue and the game is getting pretty damn good.

    Taking a step foward in the MMO industry, Hellgate utilizes DirectX 10 and Windows Vista. With a great story line that you can jump right into (literally), Hellgate will become my new addiction until something as entertaining can grab my attention. Like everyone else that's played the beta I'm awaiting my retail copy to start my trek through hellbent london. The final test of this MMO Action-RPG will be at that time, beta comments aside.… Expand

    People do you realize that you do not have to pay $10 a month to play online it is optional. The single player and multiplayer are free out of the box. This is a VERSITLE game unlike pay to play mmo. The only thing this game lacks is a persistent world like a mmo. but you get an awesome single player and multiplayer game. You can play online for free. Think about it this way. Buy the game. Play for three months online without paying and when you want to subscribe you can get all of the subscriber additions for just $10. It is basically a replacement to expansion pacts since they will be updating the game constantly. Diablo 2 never got any major content updates for free until several years after release in the form of patch 1.10 now just imagine awesome content updates constantly streaming in that makes the $10 a month worth it.… Expand

    Graphics won't help you enjoy this let down. Lacks appeal on gameplay and technical aspect. Sound is extremely buggy and glitchy. I base my comments on the demo, and from my experience I can tell that the actual game won't be very different

    Ignore the negativity. Try it yourself. If you like Action RPGs like Diablo and Sacred and Titan Quest, and you like FPS action games... you'll very likely enjoy the combination of the two in Hellgate. Well worth the time spent playing it.

    I was in the beta and I can say that the game has the addictivness of Diablos loot whoring with a great engine and nice multiplayer functionality. The main issues i have heard revolve around the subscriber vs non-subscriber angle but after playing it for awhile in the beta I have already preordered it and I hope to get in on the founders offer.

    one of the best game rpg + fps ever! :D i love it. played beta and its very excellent and good. don't listen to those negative feedbacks because 1. they never play the game or beta and prob play gay ass wow which is a very boring and terribal game. 2. there aspect of the game is way different than someone else or even you or me. some poeple like different kind of games. i am a fps player so i prefer playing fps but rpg + mmo i never played before together and i would have to say its really really a grea tgame!… Expand

    If you enjoy mindlessly shooting away countless enemies in order to upgrade weapons and armor, there's really no way you could hate this game. There's enough variety to the enemies to keep you engaged. One downfall is that there's not enough variety to the environments you fight them in. In that respect, it's not much different from the Diablo series. The BIG difference is the lack of a compelling and cohesive storyline.… Expand

    Metacritic's average rating hit the nail dead on. Usually I dont play games with under an 80 rating, simply b/c it usually isnt my time. It isnt the greatest game, it has many flaws. Multiplayer HAS been fixed since launch. You cant expect a game to be 100% perfect at launch and things like multiplayer will only be seen when users cant connect. So I dont hold that against them. However, it is a BASE GAME. By this I mean it contains the basis of an RPG without much fluff. Follow the main quest and you will do fine. It is not a challenging game unless you play hardcore. It was somewhat dissapointing but its not a horrible game in my opinion. Yes it is mindless killing.… Expand

    I can't believe Flagship spent so much time making this game. Putting aside all the technical issues, which FS seems in no hurry to fix, the story just barely makes any sense at all. It's poorly written and poorly executed. As a player with no interest in multiplayer I feel particularly ripped off. It's great to say that "no game is perfect at launch", but for single player what you get for $50 is just what's in the box. What's in the box is a half completed game. I gave it a 2 instead of a 1 because it was fun for a few days.… Expand

    Like grind? Then you like Hellgate. After you blast through the standard level so easily you fall asleep you will look forward to a harder experience on Elite. Prepare to be disappointed. Even on Elite it isnt hard as I would define hard (ie requires skill, concentration and practice to master). When players tell you its "harder" they just mean it takes longer. You die more often and instead of resurrecting you have to wade through the last hours worth of maps to get back to where you were to do the same old fight again, and again, and again. And if you are tempted to try to run right through and try to ignore the yard trash? Well not with an evoker. You can be mobbed and killed in less than a second. Nope, you have to work your way back killing everything in your path with the same fairly easy but time consuming techniques that killed the last 1000 monsters. On top of that the graphics are so so, the story line weakly presented, the immersion non existant and there a million and one annoying features (like if you die or log off your minimap closes .... why would you do this ffs? Just leave the gui as I set it up thanks ...). I played it because I was hoping there would be something more to it in Elite. But there isnt. If you liked diablo or wow or eq you may like this IF you play with a dedicated group of friends. But by yourself? Give it a miss.… Expand

    Cool idea and very fun gamplay. Unfortunately it lacks variety and you have to pay a silly monthly fee for what is essentially a bunch of promised content that is not even in the actual game. So really you are paying $9 a month for nothing, and you dont realize it till you have already paid. Devs are money mongers and will censor anything related to their crooked billing practices on their forums, so you don't even get a warning, you cant read it on the forums. The game is good, but Flagship has a very crooked business agenda, and the game loses points overall for that alone.… Expand

    I got HG:L without knowing much more about it than what hyping articles around the Web had to say about it (which I always take with a huge grain of salt; typically the bigger the hype, the poorer is the game actually is). So I read on the official boards that many beta testers are still very angry with what FSS delivered, the slow pace at which they seem to fix/better things, how they completely dropped the ball on everyone. Since I wasn't in beta, I have no idea what the game was expected to be at launch; I do however remember the shiny screenshots that went around the Web some months before HG:L came out, frankly I too was wondering where those awesome graphics and lighting effects went. So back to gist of the review; I like HG:L. Not love, not hate, it's *ok*. If it feels very half-baked in some areas (skills, character progression as a whole), the action and different styles of gameplay for each of the factions is actually well done. The action is well paced, but it soon feels *very* repetitive even for a RPG grinder. One really overhyped feature is the random map generator to improve replayability; it sounds much nicer than it actually is, the corridors still look the same, the only difference is you may need to turn left instead of right (but your directional goal is still the same, so who cares). Graphics in DX9 mode look good, but dated; as said before, it looks and feel like a 2004-05 game (for the very picky, at least); I haven't had the chance to try out DX10 graphics personally, I heard they look much nicer, but there are some pretty bad lag problems even for those with very high-end gaming systems.… Expand

    this game is really bad a waste of 50$ no matter how they or some fanboy lie you into get it dont its suck a rip off i would only buy this game for 5$ not worth anything more its boring as hell repetitive you keep doing the same think in almost the same map for 100 of hours

    Origionally I would of agreed with many people on the rating of this game, as that the game was buggy and took away from playability. It became very fustrating attempting to do almost anything. However, after MANY patches, performance upgrades, and soon to be released, patch 2.0 and 2.1, removed game bugs and is now enjoyable. With the rebalancing and New features the game has fully evolved, similar to that of other role playing games. You know what one I'm thinking about. cough d2 cough. Given that this game suits both semi MMO and FPS games, I find it addictive and very replayable. But due to the repeatativeness of the game, I will only give it an 8/10. But I am addicted!… Expand

    Submitted Aug. 20/ 08 - First off I'm a huge fan of the Blizzard universe - especially Diablo II.. Hellgate London is another Action RPG from the makers of Diablo. The best part of this game was the looting system and the resulting fabulous items, which was the same as Diablo II's. The original cut scene was great. I'm guessing the corporate juggernaut, Electronic Arts saved more money by making the cut scenes between Acts -another Diablo II feature - only about 5 seconds long. I didn't notice too many bugs (my computer crashed once and the game got laggier as it progressed), I stopped playing by the time I got to Act III. Hellgate London is a really disappointing, unpolished product. In fact the worst part of the game was also an attractive selling point for me: "Dramatically generated levels for a unique experience every time". After playing, this seemed a lot more like a time saver on EA's part than a unique experience. For example, I kept playing the same levels over and over, like I'd do the street level again and there'd be the one house you can go up to the 3rd level on and the one place where you can go down a level - all placed in different sequence of course - but relatively exactly the same.. The story, NPC banter and side quests are lazily thrown together: "Kill this many monsters on this level"... "Touch this many telephone poles" or "Touch this many reactors" whatever it was.. I just wanted to blaze through, but then fighting and looting IS the whole game. Save your money and check out Titan Quest instead. It's much better and about as close to Diablo II as you can get..     I was thoroughly disappointed with this game. It seems really half-assed and repetitive. I didn't play very long but as far as i got there were three environments, subway, city and tunnels. pretty much everywhere in the game was one of these three environments but in a different layout. there were tons of bugs and glitches amd just wasn't very enjoyable after the first week or so. I admit that there probably were more environments but still very monotonous. And dont even get me started on the optional monthly fee. Think of fast food putting all the leftovers from a cow into your burger thats pretty much what the players who didn't pay the monthly fee got. If you want to play a similar game that is much more well done and much more fun play guild wars… Expand

    The game is somewhat repetative but once you get into the higher level content it opens itself up to a lot of fun. The inventory management system is completly FUBAR though...if not for the tedium of dis-assembling objects I would give this title a 10.

    A total dissapointment graphics are not really good what wouldnt disturb me if a diddnt get the feeling that i was playing serious sam with a +4 trainer (autoaim no reaload unlimited ammo and not enough enemys :S) they havent even make the effort to dub the npc's its like a boring mmorpg with tiny levels no players and a useless interface.

    Anyone who tells you that they encountered no bugs with their "setup" is lying. The game is as bugged as any flawed release you've ever heard of, and no amount of fanboism is going to deny this fact. That said, the game is fun and addicting, if not tediously repetitive a la City of Heroes. The problems with randomly-generated content become very apparent the 100th time you visit an underground train station or tunnel. We expected so much more from the Diablo team, but it goes to show that it was really Blizzard, not Roper/Brevik, that made Diablo the classic that it became.… Expand

    Hellgate feels like an exercise in game design where the goal was to see how little human effort was possible to produce a game. It's just a bunch of boiler plate environment templates spliced together and populated with things to kill. You start seeing through the system almost immediately, and it becomes a boring stats game with lame pay offs. A good story might have somewhat rescued it, but there isn't one. The lack of voice acting is pathetic. Must be nice to just pocket the money you should have spent on voice talent and go with text windows instead. A $60 game with endless TEXT BOXES in 2007? WTF? Some official reviewers need to be canned for not mentioning that glaring issue. All the side quests are one-offs and don't play into any larger story (saves on programming), and rewards are just crappy items like the ones you find in droves just walking around (more effort saved). A lot of people saying it's a 3D Diablo or even "Diablo 3". NOT EVEN CLOSE! Hellgate is like a raw Diablo stats engine stripped of everything else that Made Diablo interesting--a story, thriving towns, engaging NPCs with the illusion of lives. The Hellgate NPCs just stand there like mannequins--they might as well be replaced by a quest headings. I really thought the guys rating this game low were full of it, but now I wish I'd listened.     No game has been this fun since Diablo, and i have played alot of games yes it's a bit buggy but it gets better and better at a record speed, just look at ex. moh: airbornor many others still not fixed this goes from not so stable to pretty stable in 2 days other games goes months before patch

    As a beta 1 year from release it's pretty good. As a retail version costing box, subscription, and in game advertisements, the game is a shameful scam to get your money without delivering much. Bugs abound. The story line and content are paper thin, shallow as a puddle. You can play through it in a week and be done with it. The conveniences that make a game playable aren’t there. The chat interface, the grouping interface, the item management, all inferior to what we expect having played good games. On paper, without ever playing the game, HGL looks great, and I looked forward to the game for a long time, and I was so happy to get into the beta. I wanted HGL to succeed. What a disappointment it turned out to be on release.… Expand

    This is what happens when developers spend all their time on gameplay, but spend little time on production value. They create a beautiful world and great gameplay experience, but then fail to get you engaged in it. The main quest needs to be voice acted...sorry but clicking next to go through some text dialog just dosen't cut it anymore. The cut scenes need to be OMG cool, not some cheesy book animation that just denotes story sections. I want to love this game because it has so much going for it.     Game feels unfinished. It's fun at first, while you're taking in the novelty of "diablo into 3D". However, you soon realize that the skills are quite boring and there's not really anything intrinsic to the game that gets you excited to keep playing. To rub salt into the wound, the boring content will probably be fixed later on in the game's lifecycle but will only be made available to subscribers. Thus, for 50 bucks, you get what feels almost like a game prototype, and after who-knows-how-much-more in subscription fees you get the rest of the actual game. I would suggest staying away from this for at least several months. Not only to wait for them to make the game more complete, but to see how frequently they drop updates now that subscribers are paying for it. Furthermore, their servers are extremely unstable right now so you can barely even get online… Expand

    If you are looking for a true action RPG that offers hours of playtime then Hellgate is your game. It has a good mix of character options and an interesting storyline with lots of options to play the game your way. My only complaints are the lack of LAN functionality and some online only pay for use features that leave people who spent the money for two copies (like me) so that you can play two people at once. The manual is not very good but they never are nowadays. (Fallout 3 manual better be good Bethesda!) The system requirements are pretty low and the graphics are DX10 but not at the Crysis level, not even close. But the game isn't a FPS its a hack and slash and shoot and whatever your character class may be. Keep Fit and Have Fun!… Expand

    Very poor quality control (buggy) for a major title from well-known developers. Boring, pointless quests. Many levels/locations look alike - randomization is not a substitute for good level design. Subscriptions still not working three days after launch, but this is no great loss since my interest in subscribing has dropped to nil.

It is nice to see a Diablo style random maps and random loot system again, but from my experience the game feels very unready for release and extraordinarily repetitive. (For what it's worth, I loved Diablo 2 and enjoyed a short period of Guild Wars) There are very few environment changes, very few changes in monsters, and the slow progression of levels turns it into a long grind with very little reward for your long hours of work.… Expand

    It has all of the elements to make it a fun game, but lacks the elements necessary for a good game. No story, no statistics on weapon damage, and bugs. This game needs three or four months worth of patches, and then it will probably be awesome. Unfortunately, after a few weeks the majority of those playing it will be so fed up with the bugs and repetitive gameplay that they won't care anymore.     It's a good game overall. There are still issues that were in the beta which found their way into the retail game. The graphics, in my opinion, are very good. The armor could use a bit of an update though. I also like the storyline. The dialog was awesome in the beta, but since so many complained about it FSS changed the dialog to the rather boring dialog that is there now. Some of the problems that weren't fixed in the beta and are alive and well in game now (as of 11/3/07) are: The engineer class bots lose all items you equip them with Random crashes that occur frequently require a hard restart The sound is glitchy (for lack of a better term) at times I'm sure there are more things that could go up there, but these are the main complaints I have seen or have had. Some of these are supposed to be addressed and fixed in the November 5th patch (also the "Guy Fox" in game event for subscribers). There is a subscription plan, but ONLY if you want to pay it. You don't have to pay it, but you don't get any extra content updates. You do get the patches and all other game updates. Yes, the game is hack-n-slash and can be very action oriented if you enjoy killing huge groups of demons alone or with friends. It can also be boring and slow at times, but that's the nature of the beast. It is a MMO, but not a typical kill this many bad guys and get this many items MMO. It is a MMO game just because of what MMO actually stands for; Massive Multi-player Online game. Are the "worlds" persistant? No. Do you see everyone else running around farming all the bad guys you need to kill? No. You only see other players if you are grouped with them. The chat interface needs a lot of work although right now it is 300 times better than what was in the beta. The chat interface is either right in the way when it is open or you completely forget about it when it is hidden. In my opinion, the gameplay is good and fluid except as one of the Templar classes. This is because many people complained that the original Templar class movements were too fluid and made the players feel like their characters were floating on air instead of standing and swinging swords. Right now the Templar classes stand still while swinging swords except for the first normal attack and when using certain skills. Many people need to realize that this is not another Diablo game. Some of the features are the same, but it has the name of Hellgate: London and NOT Diablo 3 for a reason other than copyright and legal problems. The game is lots of fun if you like hack-n-slash. If you don't like hack-n-slash games don't buy it.… Expand

    The game lacks any semblance of polish; the second difficulty level is a total grindfest due to lack of testing. As of now, there are some game-stopping bugs, from bugged quests that leave you stuck to the infamous memory leak. If you do not patch the game, you basically get the beta client. I'm not a graphics whore, but DX10 mode is hardly an improvement and runs very slowly because it defaults to 16x AA due to a bug. There are far too few environments, making things look very repetitive. The 'random' levels fail to impress; mazelike dungeons worked well in D2, but London isn't laid out along grid lines. Multiplayer is a ghost town because almost everyone has the clunky chat interface turned off, autoparty doesn't work and grouping scales up the monsters to such a degree that you are better off going solo. And the subscription service is a scam; thank god Elite difficulty will soon be available to all, because the game isn't worth playing without Elite difficulty, which would have made this a forced subscription game. Yet, for all its flaws, this is the first and only game so far that captures the spirit of Diablo 2, unlike other technically much better but uninteresting games like Titan Quest.     The surreal setting and concepts, as well as the ads are very kewl. Thematically I was given the impression of a world out of the Hellboy comics. I was sorely disappointed. Right off the bat, this game chugs like a frat boy on my low end machine, especially when i look at fire effects, and the whole world is practically on fire. Secondly, the critters are used over and over again, and their animations are horrid. Whenever one of those monkey rat demon things leaps at me, they freeze in the air in the exact same pose, and about one out of three times they blink back to where they leapt from. All of the creeps in this game have the same or similar derivative and unfinished feel. A lot of it reminds me of the creatures in the first DOOM. The quests often have fun dialogue, but only in text form. You can see the whole game reeking of potential greatness, but often run flat into disappointment. The environments are very small, but the game tries to make up for it by having the player run around stuck in molasses, and having the camera be a fish-eye lens. I'm giving this a low score because of what was promised, and what was actually delivered. If they had taken more time to make the game live up to its potential, it would have been great, but because it feels like they took shortcuts in delivering the game, then i feel like they lied to me, so instead of a 6 I'm giving the game a 2.… Expand

    As much as I love the idea of a FPSRPG, this is not the game that is going to put that genre on the map. Gameplay is monotonous - the story is utter drivel and delivered by npcs that look and act about as bored as I feel playing this. Generic fedex missions, monsters that that have one attack mode (charge right at you), and scenery that looks repetitive after 10 minutes of playing - all roled into a graphic engine that looks like it was ported directly from the Sega Dreamcast. Flaghip Stuidos --it's 2007! I recommend playing some of the games that have come out recently and learn from them.… Expand

    Diablo enthusiasts rejoice! Finally something to wile away the time. The true game begins after you advance, Nightmare difficulty is insane and the drops are INSANER! (yeah gfym) I love this game, I gaurantee you the naysayers never did a Mephisto run or a Ball run and therefore will never get this game, ever! A cult classic is born, thank you Flagship.

The quests are incredibly lame and so MMO-like, the reward for doing sidequests are basically nil aswell. These kind of game only come around every 3-5 years. It was bound to have problems, but they are working their asses off to resolve these asap. As I'm speaking there is another patch up fixing a lot of the 'known' problems. Seriously, in a few eeks time people will eat their words and I will see them ingame and enjoying it like I'm doing and hundreds of thousands with me.     Great core gameplay but flawed execution is probably the best description of Hellgate: London at the moment. The release day Patch 0 helped out by improving stability and performance and fixing several bugs, but several major problems remained (including one which could make it impossible to continue the main quest) forcing Flagship to push out a second patch a few days later. And even then there's still a general feeling that this game is very much a work in progress and probably will be for some time. The first clue that the release was rushed is the fact that the manual that comes in the box is outdated and inaccurate as there were countless changes made to the game between the gold announcement and the actual release (and don't bother with the official strategy guide, either, as it's positively obsolete). There is also vital information missing from the manual such as an explanation of the mini-game (the three icons you see in the lower-right of screenshots) and what the big, obvious rating number of weapons actually means (it's not damage output, as one would naturally assume). Your best best is to ditch the manual and find yourself an up-to-date and comprehensive online guide. But having said all that, I actually do enjoy the game. Despite the innumerable problems, I find myself drawn back time and time again, and I can easily blow several hours at a stretch without really noticing the time going by. If you're on the fence, take a look at the demo to see if the core gameplay hooks you (bearing in the mind that the demo at the time of this writing is actually a stripped down version of the beta and doesn't necessarily represent the game's current state). If it does then you'll probably enjoy the full game. Here's hoping Flagship is able to perfect this diamond in the rough. In six-months we could have a bona-fide classic, but now, not so much.… Expand

    In all honesty, even as a Diablo 2 fan, there is nothing this game is other than average - and possibly not even that. It is ultra-repetitive, the random level designs are a joke, the classes are terribly unbalanced (some allowing you to go through the game without getting hit), the graphics feel unpolished and weak considering it's the year 2007, and the story? What story? There is none. $10 a month is a complete sham. I don't understand why people keep comparing this game to WoW or any other MMORPG - it's not that type of game. It's a poor-man's Diablo 2 (which was released many years ago) and a mix of FPS, RPG, Hack N' Slash which fails to capture any of the genres it mixes well. The only reason I say it's not a 5 is because some Diablo 2 dreamers may like this game. I don't.… Expand

If you find click-and-kill action RPGs boring, this game is /not/ for you. If you still reinstall Diablo 2 occasionally because you want to massacre demons and be amused by pop-culture references and tongue-in-cheek humor in the quests, you can't miss with Hellgate.… Expand

Once it became obvious that I would be seeing the same sewers, hallways and maps, I became very discouraged. And sadly, as the game progressed, so did my regret at spending $60(CAN) hard earned dollars on a beta game....save yourself the embarrassment and please save your cash on something worth while!… Expand

The developers are showing a dedication to fix the bugs in time, along with adding content for subscribers, so I don't think this case will be much different than other games with a "bad launch". Yes, it's regrettable it happens, but what matters most to me is how the game looks like after the devs have had time to release a few early patches. Rating would be up a notch or two without the bugs, because this one really plays streamlined otherwise, and I keep losing hours to it. If you're a Diablo fan, you should take a long hard look at this one, especially for Christmas, where I suspect this game will have seen much more polish.… Expand

    A fresh action-rpg, bringing the charm and addictiveness of Diablo 2 into the world of 3d. The gameplay itself is alot of fun, and can keep you in a chair for hours at a time. However, the story could have been presented better, and the NPC's personalities are very, very unappealing, you'll prolly end up hating your "allies" just as bad as the demons you're slaying... But overall, it's a gameplay-driven game, and that part is alot of fun. 9/10… Expand

    After 5 hours of play, the game has left my hard drive; at least for a few months. After, hopefully, numerous graphical and technical bugs are fixed (that consistently destroy the atmosphere of the game), I may once again give it a try. I was really looking forward to this game to recapture the Diablo experience, but it has not and it has fallen victim to its unattained self-promoting hype. Even if fixed, the game at it's core will be only a decent dungeon crawler, and not the classic Diablo-like RPG that was promised. The developers may have been from Blizzard at one time, but they forgot that Blizzard's strength has always been strong game play and uncompromising quality control.… Expand

Performance bugs, gameplay bugs, stability bugs, and even the subscription service is bugged. The people rating this as a 10 are not being honest - no matter how much you might like this game, it has some major flaws that need to be corrected before you can even begin to enjoy it. Wait about 6 months, then it might be okay, and it might actually be worthwhile. I certainly wouldn't recommend subscribing or heaven forbid paying 150 to be a founder.… Expand

    I'm going to give this one a 10, just to piss off the folks who actually compare the graphics to Crysis and complain about weak storytelling in an ACTION-rpg, clearly centred around it's multiplayer aspect where an elaborate storyline is as redundant as in your run-off-the-mill action movie. What where you people expecting ?! This game was develeloped by a major part of the team that made the Diablo series and it never was intended to be anything but a spiritual successor to those games - and unlike certain other games (hello, Bioshock !) it does that job extremely well, despite many flaws. Having played virtually all so-called "diablo-killers" from the last seven years I can safely say that HGL is the ONLY game that lives up to that premise. As far as I'm concerned, the graphics are beautiful - some might not be able to see this as they are blinded by the "zomg-look-at-that-water!!!1112"-SM4.0 fireworks applied by other games, but after all, at least in this case art > technology. The musical score is plainly phantastic, sadly, you rarely get to enjoy it.… Expand

    Now that the Hellgate:London Beta NDA is lifted, i thought I'd share my impressions of my last 4 weeks in Hell with you. First things first: the game really is a blast to play! It's an Action RPG par excellence made by the makers of Diablo and Diablo II that have left Blizzard and founded Flagship Studios. The game has 6 classes, each with its own Skill tree and its own pacing. Me and a buddy have played three characters up to lvl 22 (lvl cap in beta), the one was a Blademaster, which is basically the dual-sword-wielding damage dealer, often charging head first into battle. Secondly, I played a Marksman which really could be described as a traditional FPS shooter class. You can crauch, you can sniper your enemies or you can specialize in being a rapid-firing, ricocheting damage machine. The third one was an Evoker, which is a battle mage having different elemental damage skills at hand. With this one the pacing is hugely different, you always have to keep moving, keeping at least a little distance between you and the hordes of demons that have invaded London in 2038 to drop lots of "phat lewt" just for you! Maybe you have read about technical problems occuring during the beta phase, which definitely cannot be denied. There have been bugs and for some days it was quite impossible to play at all, but to me it seems that Flagship studios are doing a great job, since there have been HUGE improvements on both stability and performance in the 4 weeks I have been in the beta. So, wisely looking into the future ;) this game earns 10 points, if they won't be doing any capital mistakes in the future. It's just too damn addictive.… Expand

    I've only played the demo (obviously), so I won't give too harsh a score. Unfortunately, the gameplay is rather mediocre. While I like the facade of different play-styles between the classes (hack and slash, FPS, RPG) it's all really the same when you zoom out and think about it, for better or for worse. I think the most glaring problem was the graphics. Now, graphics don't make the game, but the presentation I witnessed was rather sad. My hardware can handle Doom 3 at maximum settings with ease, but for some reason this game limited my settings to "medium" (note to designers: limiting player choice on how they can adjust their settings is generally a bad idea, even if you think it's for their own good). "Medium" doesn't sound too bad, but even with the maximum settings in this range, the environmental textures were blurry and indistinguishable. The character textures fared slightly better, but more so in the case of the Marksman- the Blademaster was an ugly mess. On that note, the customization features felt somewhat lacking. Some freedom in dress would be appreciated, but I think its the cartoonish faces that really disappoint (although I think it's interesting that they included a Jude Law lookalike). There's fun to be had, but I wouldn't expect graphical entertainment if your system is from the low-to-medium-high range (seriously, I was startled by the limitations). The graphics and design seem too dull and are of very poor quality; the nearly 3-year-old Guild Wars far outshines this games in terms of graphics. I have a burning feeling that it's the unnecessary graphics limitation that really hammers the nail into the graphical coffin. Ultimately, it would seem that the looks of the game seemed to be one of the major selling points. If this demo is truly an indication of how it looks and plays, than I'd expect nothing but lower-end mediocrity with the full version.… Expand

    Sun 30 Dec 07 While I must say that I was somewhat disappointed with the publisher's push to release this game too early, I must applaud Flagship Studios for working tirelessly to publish patches in the wake of what could have resulted in disaster for the game's visionaries. Unlike some other game creators, FSS has kept its customers "in the loop" regarding what to expect and when to expect it, and while the game itself could still use improvement, based on how I have seen FSS step up to the plate on these issues, I have every confidence that they will bring this game to where it needs to be for online gamers. Not everyone will enjoy this game; no game can claim universal appeal, but the action is fast-paced, the character creation and development is appealing, and the game's system of random foes, areas, and item generation is addicitive. After a session of play, I don't leave this game feeling unfulfilled. I also would like to make a suggestion to the administrators of metacritic.com. Because games such as this undergo development continuously after release, it would be immensely helpful to viewers if you would date stamp all reviews. If we look at a lousy review for a game followed by a complimentary one, it would be nice to know when each of these was posted. A damning review over 6 months old is much less valuable to us than one which is only a week old, but on your site, we can't tell which is which. As you noticed, I included the date of my review at the beginning of my post, but it would be helpful if this were included in your database when the review listing is generated.… Expand

    Pretty overrated, but a bit of fun. Cheesy dialogue and story. Very repetetive layouts, cheesy weapon aiming. Nothing special.

    Ok first off I'm not saying its a bad game, I am saying its a flawed game. For a game that it meant almost specifically for an online gaming experience, how come all of my interactions with people is followed swiftly by a giant wod of lag? I am a massive fan of the old Diablo series and to have the game that is supposedly the bastard child of the series not even work well online is just plain cruel. If they fixed the problem with the servers I might just consider playing, hell I might even subscribe.… Expand

    Overall, insanely disappointing. The game is not stable, I would crash daily..more so AFTER the game had been patched. After completing normal, the curve into nightmare mode is insane, unreasonably hard, the mobs are over 8 levels higher than you, so you must go back into normal mode and grind 5+ levels to play even in nightmare. The game has some fun element, but overall it becomes repetitive and boring. I killed about a week with this game, and haven't run it in over a month, if not more. It has potential for sure, but I feel like the initial suckage of the game has condemned them and they may not even make it to the point where the came can live up to what it could be. I am not sure if Flagship is to blame for poor development, or EA is to blame for putting pressure to release an incomplete game, so, I am going to blame both. This game did not live up to the hype what-so-ever. If you are looking to throw away 50 dollars, go buy it, have fun for a couple days then quit due to frustration, go for it, though, if you are looking for something to play for a long period of time, this is not it.… Expand

    For all it's worth, Hellgate London does a fine job with its mechanics, graphics, and story. But if it wasn't for the fact that this is a literal Diablo 3 (the same team who brought us the Diablo titles from Blizzard made Hellgate), it does nothing new with the Action RPG formula, it simply makes it refreshing, and enjoyable again. Not to mention Hellgate has the potential for great replayability and a fun and engrossing multiplayer.… Expand

    Its a great game, however forcing people to subscribe is not in the best interest of the consumer. Content that is already on the CD should be made available to all, not chop half of the options to have people subscribe.

    This game does not come close to living up to expectations, now to be fair I am basing my judgement off of the demo. The graphics are nothing revolutionary, and yes I have the necessary rig to run it. In comparison, Crysis, Hellgate does not even come close. The missions get boring really fast, and the weapon effects are uninspiring. I guess they have a big dynasty to live up to, and maybe oversold themselves especially with the first rate preview movie released a while back.… Expand

    Poor graphics, bugs that carried over from the beta, horrible memory leaks, and boring, derivative quests and gameplay doom this one to the mire of average at best games.

    This game is the first online game that has actually been fun since the WoW expansion. It definitely takes the Diablo concept to the next level, and the quality of the past Diablo releases has carried forward to this release.

    Gets boring to fast. I dont like the idea of charging people either. Graphics are ok, but was looking more for an adventurous game. This game is all hack and slash and nothing else. Dont waste your money.

    Game is beautiful, and if you are worrying about the subscription fee. You're paying for constant "expansions" onto the game, new levels, new features and etc. They charge a subscription fee to those who chose to subscribe so that they can access new content, and be involved in other sorts of goodies.

    Terrible game coding, terrible graphics engine. Addictive gameplay, it's Diablo 2 in the third dimension. Four years in development, and they come out with absolute unpolished rubbish. Subscription fee is a joke and a scam. Be warned, unless you are a hardcore Diablo 2 fan and someone who has tunnel vision when it comes to selecting games, this is not worth 50 dollars or any subscription fee.… Expand

    If you're looking for Diablo 3, this is it. No it's not an MMO with open persistent worlds, but it is a highly addictive hack and slash treasure hunt game. Honestly, don't listen to the naysayers, if you loved Diablo 2 for years and years like I did, you'll love Hellgate London.

    This game was a major disappointment to me. The randomized maps are a good idea, but for some reason seem repetative after a short while. The interface is not very good compared to most other games of this type, including WoW, Guild Wars, Titan Quest, and even Diablo 2. The game is trying to be an action RPG, instance-based non-MMO mutiplayer game, and an FPS all at the same time, and the combination just does not work very well. Instead of this mish-mash, I would rather play a real MMO like WoW, a real action RPG like Titan Quest, Sacred, or Diablo 2, or a real FPS like Unreal Tournament 3 or Battlefield 2 / 2142. The subscription fee for the "elite" content is also a major rip-off. Guild Wars contains everything that HGL does, and there is no subscription fee.… Expand

    Actually more like a 9.2 or 9.3. Hellgate is a tough game to review since it combines different genres, hence it could have different point of views whether it's good or not. Compared to your regular fps or rpg it lacks on many levels, but it was designed to be a hack and slash with a shallow storyline and packed with action. On that level it accomplishes many things, and unlike what pcgamer stated, that it doesn't redifine the genre, i wonder what camera they were playing with because that combo of fps and third person innovates the hack and slash. i wouldn't be surprised if many more diablo clones come out with a lot of hellgate's mechanics.… Expand

    Hellgate: London takes the elements that made the Diablo series classic, and puts them in new, invigorating setting of demonic threat, dark magic and high technology. The fresh world of Hellgate: London is its greatest asset, but sadly the game fails in capitalizing it properly, with quite shoddy plot and generic missions outside the main story. Nevertheless, Hellgate: London is a good action RPG with plenty to enjoy. How the multiplayer system works when the game hits stores will ultimately determine the staying power of the game.
