IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 Image
  • Summary: Oleg Maddox's Il-2 Sturmovik series of flight simulators continues to expand. The latest offering, Il-2 1946, adds 36 new planes, four new gigantic maps, over a hundred new ground objects, and nearly 200 new campaign missions. This new opus also includes all of the previous Il-2 series content. What began as a one-aircraft study sim is now an astonishing anthology, with a whopping 229 flyable aircraft and over 300 aircraft total! Not to mention that players will have the opportunity to get a first glance at the future of the series arriving next year: Storm of War Battle of Britain via exclusive bonus videos. Expand

1946 might as well be the holy grail of WWII flight sims, a platinum anthology of everything good about no-frills airborne scrimmaging. The new material's a deal, whether you own the earlier games or not. And if you don't, 30 bucks nets you something that -- six years on -- still outclasses everything else.
  2. This is the biggest and best combat flight sim money can buy, but it's by no means flawless. [Jan 2007, p.70]
  3. Aside from the half-functional multi-player and a brutal learning curve, there's nothing about IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 that isn't amazing. Superb aircraft flight modeling? Check. Amazing looking aircraft? Check. More than 220 different aircraft and around 200 missions? Check.

It is the most realistic ww2 flight sim out there, it may be a pain to learn dogfighting in il2 for some who havent got the first hand experience in ww2 dogfights, but once you are through, it gives you the most genuine ww2 air combat experience, Expand

This is the absolute best WW2 flight sim yet. Given the age of the engine, it is still amazingly good looking and now supports a huge modding comunity which keeps me still very interested in flying after thousands of hours on both single and multiplayer. No other sim even comes close in scope and detail. Minor flaws are the, at times, dull dynamic campaign missions and AI flying into terrain occasionally. The weather is not very detailed and has limited user controls. Forests are only visible from above, meaning you may fly into them when very close to the deck. But really, as I said the greatest WW2 combat sim ever! Expand
