Legends of Eisenwald is one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises that we engaged with this summer. Intriguing storytelling, thrilling plot twists and ambiguous morale decisions are wrapped up in an excellent medieval/ feudal environment. The simple yet addictive turn based battle system, the many upgradeable military units and a well built economic system, raise the game’s status to “totally recommended” for the genre’s fans.
A triumph of raw substance over style, Legends of Eisenwald constantly wins over the heart of the RPG connoisseur despite its incompleteness thanks to its deep battle system and well crafted adventures. A great game for strategy experts.
Amazing game, the best I played in years: atmosphere, story and unique combat system work so well together. Especially I liked the legends - first I thought they were a part of the lore but later on I had to deal with consequences of those legends. The combat seemed simple at the very beginning but the variety of units and different weapons makes it so fun and challenging, especially in higher levels of difficulty. There are a few minor drawbacks: interface needs getting used to, plus I didn't find any handbook or manual. Which on the other hand let me to discover many things on my own. Still, a solid 10 as these things are really minor.
This interesting strategy-mix combines elements from turnbased classics, like Might & Magic: Heroes, King's Bounty, Disciples and Expeditions: Conquistador. Though the overall game-experience can be quite satisfying, there are some issues, that lowers the fun.
Aterdux Entertainment decided to make an interesting low fantasy mix of adventure, turn-based strategy combat and RPG elements. Legends of Eisenwald offers many hours of fun, enjoyment and, unfortunately, a myriad of shortcomings all packed together.
Legends of Eisenwald tries hard to challenge the competition. But as a roleplaying game it is either corny or boring while the turn based tactics are standard respectively borderline uninteresting.
Rly Great music, visuals, interesting writing. Combat system seems to be simplistic but once you meet challenging opponent you see there's quite a few layers of complexity there. Actually much more complexity than in Disciples. And huge nonlinear story for many hours of play.
Indie dev = some tech flaws here and there - but they deserve your support more than majors that just make 'samegame345'. And, as I can see, LoE devs try to provide support for everyone on forums.
And, btw, full map and scenario editor! Like that was for HOMM 1-3. Hope for free new maps from community.
I got Eisenwald in early access, and it shown great promise. Now that the game is finally out and I got through several maps, I found that I lost interest fairly quickly.
The premise of the game is not new - move around the map in semi-real time, fight encounters on a hex grid battlemap. Collect loot, level up, eventually get a couple castles, while continuing through the story.
The game takes an unorthodox approach to storytelling - everyone is a bad guy, but does not think they are and rat out their neighbors. This pattern repeats throughout the game where the player is left to decide who's the lesser evil.
Tactical combat has potential for the first couple maps, but after this you will settle into more or less same combination of units, where you train them (from militia to footman to knight). This gets old after a while.
Tactical map rules are quite cut and dry - you can only attack the closest enemy. The AI is still pretty poor, and the game attempts to balance this "challenge" by filling enemy ranks with spearman and pikemen. Seriously, you will see ridiculous amounts of enemy spearmen, guards and pikemen - characters that have first strike ability. They are fairly useless for the player who is forced to attack all the time, but make a lot of fights very annoying and increase grind times as you pay through the nose to heal your troops.
The strategic map action is pretty boring - bandits will recapture your villages or outposts dozens of times, you will go to the same areas to grind the same bandits. Apparently enemy levels up over time, so if you leave some bandits in a corner of the map, they will eventually start to wear plate armor and have warlocks with them.
There are better titles with more fun game mechanics, for example Kings Bounty series, which offers a lot more variety of units and better special abilities, as well as more interesting exploration.
Not a bad game by itself, but practically no fixes in patches for the main problem - gameplay. Yes, it has something new in it at the start, that's why you start playing it. But when you realise that after finishing the training and the first map, you find nothing new, the game upsets you. You continue playing, hoping that maybe it's not over, maybe the game didn't show all of it's potential yet, but no. And then you just delete it.
The worst thing is that you also hope that with new maps comes new story, but again no, all the same.
3/10
Complains about inadequate resolution, but provides no way to change it. Texts too small to be read, but no options to increase size or scale the UI. Of course, it's a text-heavy game. That's what you get when clowns decide to write software.
SummaryDo you miss old school RPG/strategy games? If so, we invite you to Eisenwald where we carry on the proud tradition of games like Kings Bounty or Disciples 2. In Legends of Eisenwald you will encounter a unique turn-based combat system and story driven campaign set in a low fantasy medieval world. Gather your troops and embark on a danger...
