  • Summary: Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds is filled with faithful translations of classic creatures, spells and enchantments from the premier trading card game in a visually stunning 3D game environment rife with real-time strategic fighting, devastating wizard arsenals and intense creature combat. In Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds players will choose a duelist and up to two of "Magic's" five colors -- red, green, white, blue, and black -- to attempt to reduce their opponent's life to zero. Of course, getting an opponent to zero will not be easy; players will have to utilize lightning reflexes, strategic brilliance and, on occasion, raw power to overcome an enemy. Expand

  1. A compelling and brave interpretation, let down by an obtuse single-player mode. [PC Gamer UK]
  2. Easy to pick up and damn fun to play.
  3. 79
The interface and control is simple enough but the depth of this sucker will likely be lost on most.
  4. Feels too much like a simple port of a console game. PC gamers are learning to expect much more! If you enjoy console beat-‘em-ups, then it will at least provide some variety in your diet.
  5. Could have benefited from a better interface, but at its core, Battlegrounds is still a decent game.
  6. 60
It goes halfway towards inventing a new genre, but it can't decide whether to invent the action-RTS or the tactical-fighting game, so it ends up just awkwardly defying any sort of established gameplay conventions.
  7. If I want impossible, I'll call my mother. [Apr 2004, p.89]

I am a big MTG fan and I thought this was an incredibly good translation. Had tons of fun playing this, even after beating all of the colors. I really wish they would develop a new version for Xbox360! Expand

This game was so super great. Granted, I've been a Magic fan since Beta, so it might be a bit esoteric and I'm not realizing it, but it was a great twist in an arcade duel action game. I bring it out and play it fairly often, nearly 10 years later. Still find quite a bit of frustration in some of the battles, but merely due to the challenge it offers. Great game. Expand
