Once you're all alone in front, improved stick handling and shooting accuracy will give you the toolset to beat your goaltender for that decisive goal. Dynamic AI adjusts to your every move both on offense and defense, promising to challenge even the most skilled hockey players. The intelligent CPU scouts your tendencies like a coach and makes the necessary adjustments to shut down your money plays, forcing you to adjust your style of play. New analog speed control of the left stick gives you the variance you need to glide into the zone with control or get a burst of speed to step up on a defender. With new skating animations and responsiveness, you have the control to perform crossovers to maintain speed or carve tight turns for an immediate change in direction. 29 AHL teams – the top developmental league for the NHL – are exclusively featured and fully playable. 1. One of the better games from the consistently recommended franchise. [Dec 2007, p.80]
  2. A perfectly adequate console port. [Nov 2007, p.84]
  3. Give it a go when it's come down in price if you're desperate to have the new rosters, otherwise stick with 07. [Nov 2007, p.56]
  4. Still, NHL 08 manages to be an entertaining e adequate ice hockey game, and will remain as a valid choice for PC players who can’t afford the alternatives available in next-gen consoles.

A pretty average affair. Fun can be had if you’re really into your hockey, but there are better games to choose from.
  6. NHL 08 offers up a few control tweaks and minimal updates to the dynasty mode, but that's about it.
  7. EA Sports has once again screwed PC owners over with a cut-rate edition of one of its big fall sports games, and NHL 08 is even more of a disappointment than its football and golf comrades. [Holiday 2007, p.83]

Great game, only one disappointment that it's very similar to NHL 07, although it has some graphic improvements and some new game features.

05, 06 and 07 are 35% games, not this one.

EA needs to make a PC only front-end, with drag and drop line editing, and all will be moving in the right direction once more.

I'm very happy that the skill stick was added to the PC version, however, it is disappointing that it is not as dynamic as the PS3 or XBOX360 versions.
The inclusion of AHL franchises and introducing the salary cap to the Dynasty Mode are also nice to see. What is sorely disappointing, however, is that the player animations on goals, saves, and between periods are almost exactly the same as NHL06. The same can be said about the in-game commentary that doesn't appear to have changed one bit.
All in all, it seems as though EA has phoned this one in, but at least it's not without a few redeeming qualities.

The one improvement seems to be in the As has been said, this is almost an identical game to 2007 (which was pretty close to 2006 itself). The one improvement seems to be in the physics -- the puck reacts and bounces a little more realistically, and the players hit more realistically... both which combine to make for slightly harder scoring -- something that was needed after '07. So disappointing... Graphics/Sound/Interface not updated from 07. The controls actually seem worse. I feel like I have been stolen from.
