Make no mistake this is a tremendous homage to classic RPGs but that means it also comes with a few caveats.

It was conceived as a Mega Drive/Genesis game, and that’s what it is. Now you have to think whether the features of a “true" 16 bit RPG are something positive or negative in 2014. If they are positive, then go for it.

Successful remake of the classic JRPG with turn-based duels offers a lot of improvements and new content. This is a very nicely done Director's Cut version.

Those with a more retro mindset will find some enjoyment, but are also likely to discover that not everything trying to evoke the best of a former era does it successfully.

It is obvious that it draws a large amount of influence from that game. It is not without flaws, however, but make no mistake before reading this is a good game for a JRPG lover.

Poison is relentless in this game, make sure you always have antidotes. The first boss is real hard, after that the game is challenging but not so hard. Sometimes it is hard to tell where you need to go, but that is why we have the internet these days. Some of the enemies look like they belong in a tentacle porn. The names of the cast just seem like they don't belong. This being a re-make it would have been nice to see the weapons change in the characters hands when you equipped new stuff. Having two buttons confirm selection has caused me to waste items many times.

I thought the difference between the HD and Sega Genesis graphics would be un-settling but it actually provides some contrast to the game. I'm not a fan of SG sound though but it is what it is.

After playing the game 19 hours I can conclusively say that it was worth my money. I think anyone that enjoyed Lunar on SG or PS1 will enjoy this despite the flaws that come with it being produced by an indie studio.

But as soon as your party is "full" the painfully drab battle system and slow animation make this game more a chore than anything else.

The confusing maps and hidden goals are annoying, but typical of games in the 90s. You can consult a walkthrough if you get stuck, but there is no fix for spending 2 minutes after every 2 minute battle healing your party 1 at a time. Seriously, this game is almost unplayable 10 hours in.

It easy for people to say "That's just how retro RPGs were." The thing is, I was around when retro RPGs were just RPGs. When you bought them from a Sears Catalog with a money order and waiting 3 weeks for them to come. Retro RPGs (at least the good ones) were fun -- they still are. This game is not fun. It just annoys you.
