An enormous world filled with missions to tackle, secrets to uncover, and ships to sink. Add that to the fact that sea battles are incredibly addictive and you have quite a package.

For all its faults though, Pirates of Black Cove is a very endearing game.

If you are a big enough pirate fan and willing to overlook Pirates of Black Cove's faults in favor of its charm, there is enough fun to be had to make its budget price a barrrrgain. Should such pirate puns lead to haemorrhaging in your brain's language centers, however, then this might not be the game for you.

It's certainly never short of ideas, but inept execution sends Pirates of Black Cove toppling off the gangplank. [Nov 2011, p.134]

Overall, Pirates of Black Cove is a difficult game to recommend. It looks nice enough, and the voice acting is better -- and more prevalent -- than you might expect from a budget title, but everything else is second rate.

Let down by the poor combat and the long, tedious segments on land, Pirates of the Black Cove struggles to stand out from the crowd.
  7. Aug 11, 2011
If the developers had stuck to just sailing and ship-combat, Pirates would be a charming game. Unfortunately, it's only half of one.

Thumbs up for Pirates of Black Cove being a pirate themed strategy game, thumbs down for oversimplified gameplay, boring missions and way too slow tempo. [Oct 2011]

Pirates of Black Cove brazenly copied Sid Meier's Pirates! but can not put the individual gameplay-elements together into a successful whole. The game lacks depth and repetitive gameplay bored after a few hours. Rather play the great 1987 original, because it's much more fun than this uninspired infusion.

Aside from its uninspired combat and limited scope, Pirates of Black Cove is an endearing game at times. I wanted to love it, and kept diving back in hoping that something would click. It didn't.

The charming style and the fun battles at sea will keep you entertained for a while but the fun reaches a low during fights on land and the random crashes that you'll encounter in this game. Pirates of Black Cove had a lot of potential but unfortunately doesn't do much with it.

Action pirate strategy offers arcade playability and easy-to-learn concepts but suffers with technical issues and poor A.I. of your ship's crew. [Issue#208]

Although it's a pirate-game with a glimpse of freedom, it's choking on its bad story. You will be entertained for couple of hours by upgrading of your own ship, sea battles or by island-raiding. However, after that the entertainment disappears under a surface like a holey sailboat. Pirates of Black Cove cast anchor more to younger players than to the old ones.
  14. Aug 14, 2011
Enjoyable during the first hours of playing, Pirates of Black Cove shows very early its casual gameplay, badly developed.
  15. Aug 10, 2011
It just never offers more than a middling gameplay experience for its price. That on its own might satisfy the casual freebooters, but when you couple that mediocrity with abysmal NPC pathing, inexplicable bouts of lag, and the game's tendency to crash at key moments, even they may find themselves tossing this one down in Davy Jones' locker for good.
  16. Aug 12, 2011
There's just one basic problem with Pirates of Black Cove: the developers forgiot to deliver a game. What's the point of all the items and upgrades if nothing really makes a difference?
  17. Aug 14, 2011
This is not Sid Meiers Pirates. It's a quest based single player game which happens to have its setting in the Caribbean. And the first hour just keeps on repeating itself.

I'm sorry to say that Pirates of the Black Cove is one of the simpliest pirate games I have ever played. Gameplay is shallow, the game is buggy, short and most importantly - ugly. That overwhelming rotten scent can't be scattered by a light, funny, cartoonish atmosphere and diversified missions. It's a sad example of wasted potential and lack of attention to finishing up the all of the game's elements.

It's better to walk the plank than to sail the seas of the boring and buggy Pirates of Black Cove.
  20. Aug 8, 2011
And the fairly linear plot isn't supported by characterization; the story consists almost entirely of rumors of generic treasure that your character easily verifies. As with most of Pirates Of Black Cove, it's not actively bad, just remarkably inessential.

The story is well written and funny, and the game is full of hilarious pirate jokes. You sail the Caribbean seas with a mission to unite all the pirates (pirates, buccaneers and corsairs) and defeat the evil Black Covians. You can setup your ship with various special weapons, such as human cannonball, which shoots a willing sailor to another ship in order to capture it. Another big part of the game is light-RTS style land combat, where you try to accomplish several different missions on some 50 or so different land levels.

On the release day the game was a bit buggy but these are now fixed with patches that I recommend everyone to install. After patching I had no trouble to complete the game. It took some 15 hours to complete so the amount of content was good. I will try again with a rifleman so I can try some different approaches to land combats..

The world looks stunning, especially the water. Towns are also well made. Game's unique style can be seen everywhere from loading screens to buildings in towns. Generally the game is a bit heavy on the PC but graphics can be toned down from the options so you should be good to go even with a bit older machine. SOUND
Voice acting varies a bit from ok to great, but it's generally good. Music reminds me of Pirates and really helps to set the mood.

I am glad that I only paid £7.50 for it, but even that was a waste of cash. Ship combat is dull and laggy, land combat is so poorly executed it is laughable - there are games from the 1990's with better top down combat and AI than this thing.. The game is also very poorly balanced, and has a poor soundtrack.

To give more detail, the game is very basic and very dull.. Alot of people were, like me, expecting a cross between Sid Miers Pirates! and a strategy RPG with more character dev and ship customisation, what we got was something that failed to do either concept at all.

You have none of the ship/crew management that is found in Sid Miers Pirates, the game play itself is basically boring mission after boring mission, most of which are land based "A to B" missions that involve walking a linear path with incredibly poor combat, and absolutely shocking path finding for the land units, which often get stuck behind obstacles.

All your units lump together into an almost indistinguishable mass on land, and there is no attack move button for your units, so they will basically run along getting hit. if you don't click on each enemy individually. If they are standing still they will attack a unit right next to them, but that is about the extent of it, no room for any tactics or strategy. As said above there are games from the early 1990's that have a more sophisticated setup than this piece of junk. On top of this you are always forced to run all the way back to the beach at the end of every mission, which is basically a waste of your life.. it can take several minutes on some of the larger islands and is utterly pointless.

The Naval combat is very very dull, repetitive close range canon spam abut sums it up. Unlike almost any other "Age of Sail" or Pirate based game, you do not have options for canon shot type, so no grape shot to whittle down the crew or chain shot to smash the masts and sails, just repetitive spamming of the fire button. The games poor balance is most visible when it comes to the ships, your starting ship is a floating tube, as to be expected, but it is easily possible to gain very early access to the larger ships, which basically own every thing.. combined with the ability to repair your ships even during combat, you would have to be an idiot to lose you ship, making the combat both boring and too easy.

Long and short of it is, do not buy this game. If you want a pirate game then go for Sid Miers Pirates if you have not played it, or Akella's Age of Pirates titles are pretty good if you install the mod's.
