Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier features a story that manages to excite and get players invested in despite it not going too deep into the lives of both apes and humans. It’s also an important experiment in storytelling, and one that largely winds up being successful.
Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is an exciting narrative adventure that fans of the recent film trilogy will love. Its biggest drawback is perhaps how little interaction you actually have with it and that some of your choices make no difference to the game’s direction, but as a fantastic-looking, branching story in a loved world, there’s nothing else quite like it.
I'm really a big fan of this franchise, the new one that is. So naturally I bought this. I liked it, seems a tad overpriced but other than that it was definitely cool. I don't remember it being very long though which is definitely a shame. My main take away from this game though, GIVE US MORE PLANET OF THE APES GAMES! And please, make them good.
I really enjoyed this "game." I am a huge Planet of the Apes fan, and being able to get a new story about this world, and play (an admittedly minor) role in shaping it was pretty awesome. This is similar to a Telltale game. The biggest difference is that there are even less quick-time-events (which I'm ok with). I sat back, experienced the story and added a bit of input. While I understand that this would be offputting to many, it was right up my alley. I like story driven games, and this is even more like a story driven experience than game. Almost like reading a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' book, I'll snatch these type of 'games' every time.
Update: Since I have now Platniumed this game I'll give an additional bit on to my review. I still really like this game. If you are not a completionist, this is a great addition to the PotA mythos. The first playthrough was very engaging and enjoyable. After that it was quite a slog getting through all the various little bits to get to 100%. This doesn't take away from the story and game, but it certainly reduces the replayability.
A glossy though ultimately shallow use of the Planet of the Apes license, Last Frontier stands as an acceptable use of Play Link technology but little else.
A thoughtful pick-you-own-post-apocalypse worth taking your time to mull over. However, meaty moments of drama are derailed by rouge banana peels. [Jan 2017, p.91]
I really wanted to like Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier. The Apes world is fascinating and a Telltale-esque game set in that universe has all the makings for an amazing experience. While it’s an awesome idea, Last Frontier’s execution just isn’t there. Hopefully Imaginati Studios and 20th Century Fox don’t give up on this idea, though. Video games are iterative and developers learn from their mistakes. While Last Frontier can’t be recommended on its own merits, its concept has potential and shouldn’t be abandoned.
Overall, I believe that this decision-based game has been developed with multiplayer in mind and I feel that is where you will get the value for money with this game. Yes, you can play single player, but I feel that the true excitement from playing this game is not knowing how it will end despite making decisions. That is truly taken out of your hands when you add more people in to the mix. Otherwise, you may find yourself thinking this is just an animated film.
This game is an interesting take on what an interactive movie experience can be.
The performances and motion capture of this were fantastic. The story itself was good without being ground-breaking. Some of the dialogue choices you are forced to make were genuinely difficult and the overall character interaction was well done.
Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier
Tons of Drama with little gameplay
Planet of the Apes Last Frontier is basically a 4 and a half ohour long interactive movie that tells the story of man vs ape
Youll be playing from boths sides, a tribe struggling to find food for the winter, and a group of survivalists that are visited by ape hunters…
the game essentially plays itself while you make crutial decisions..
There are multiple endings and outcomes here and this game can also be played with up to 4 players locally…
as the story plays out its up to you to stier things in a certain direction, as youre playing both sides.. things can get pretty interesting here..
you can pick sides or you can try for peace.. create conflict.. its all up to you..
though outcomes aren’t always so blck and white, its possible to lose important characters in the story…
the story telling though I felt is just poorly done..
don’t get me wrong the overall story and trying to find a balance or tip the scales in this man vs ape story is enjoyable..
the delivery of this story is just awful, transitions are harsh.. its hard to tell who in the cutscenes is about to make the decision at times… and its also really hard to follow along as it isn’t the telltale style of choose a dialog option…
options are more on the side of, do you agree with this person or that person, youre right or wrong…
so you really have to pay attention to the dialog that at times is just really hard to pay attention to.. its just not interesting for the most part…
and on the ape side it’s a lot of reading though occasionally they’ll just flat out speak English.. making me wonder whats even the point of the sign language and grunting.. just give me some English speaking apes the whole time…
I do love though that you constantly feel like your decisions matter, you feel your life and the life of your tribe or group is at stake, and youll have to make so many in the moment tough calls on whther to attack or shoot in situations or just do nothing, this is definitely an interesting take on the choose your own adventure genre…
but again the delivery of the story here is still pretty rough..
And the ending. .at least for me.. felt pretty abrupt.. and left me feeling pretty disappointed with no payoff..
I give Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier
a 6/10
Damn, This game had all the potential to be the best cinematic gaming experience from the current gen, it has an amazing premise and gorgeous animation, unfortunately, it just blows, its as dull as an cinematic game can get, your decisions dont have as much consequence as expected and you don't get attached to any character along your play trough, as a fan of the new Apes movies, i feel very disappointed by what this game could've been. (Btw, the game is short as ****
One this isn't a game it is a playable movie in which your choices don't matter. It filled to the brim with forced bland tropes. They had the chance to make an excellent experience and this pales in comparison to others in the genre. Graphics are generally nice when they load properly. Stay away unless it is like 2 dollars on sale or you want an easy platinum trophy.
SummaryPlanet of the Apes: Last Frontier is a narrative adventure game of conquest, betrayal, and survival. When the fates of a tribe of apes and a band of human survivors intertwine, two worlds collide as their precarious existence hangs in the balance.
