The tablet origins are too obvious. Compared to the likes of Wave Race everything is simplified.

Riptide is a franchise that made its home on mobile devices, and that’s probably where it should stay.

The AI does not make mistakes – ever. Each race is only two laps long, so if you fell down, landed badly or simply pressed a wrong button – there goes your chance of winning a medal. At first, you think that you can get ahead by buying upgrades and new vehicles… But here’s where Riptide’s free-to-play past rears its ugly head: money prizes are minuscule, prices are exorbitant, and you can’t sell the scooters that you don’t need.

THE GOOD: While it is true that this is basically just a port of a tablet/mobile game- it is an extremely good, playable, enjoyable port. The controls (with a gamepad) work very well, the graphics are absolutely lovely, and the sound effects fit the atmosphere quite well. It very much plays like the next installment of the Waverace series, albeit a bit watered down. The online multiplayer, while extremely limited, is a welcome addition. There are some pretty big negatives, however:

    THE BAD:
~ The music is about 75% "laptop techno" (bad), and 25% dubstep (worse).

~The physics for player collision with another racer are kind of wonky- it doesn't have much negative effect for either racer. Additionally, if you fall off your boat, there is almost 0 time penalty- you get back on almost immediately.

~Online multiplayer, while welcome, is incredibly limited. Most matches are only 1 lap, sometimes 2 at most. The logic behind this escapes me.

~Probably the biggest problem is how you are forced to repetitively grind already completed races in order to proceed and/or purchase new vehicles. It feels like microtransactions from the mobile version were removed and not replaced with anything, or adjusted.

Overall, I really do enjoy this game and will definitely continue to play it. But I am a complete Waverace nut (Waverace 64 is one of my three all-time favorite games, and I also adore its Gamecube sequel), so bear that in mind. It is cheap, though ($6.99 on Steam as of this review), so give it a shot if you have the cash. It's definitely entertaining.
