  1. After a thorough training mode on the finer points on scrums, tries, and lineouts, one (or two players cooperatively) can take the controls and realistically injure opponents on soggy, mud-rutted pitches. Think "Madden NFL Football" minus the pads, steroids, and senile announcer, mate.

Sure, the graphics aren't top-notch, and there are some missing elements, but the bottom line is that fans of rugby will look past the little things and rejoice that the game provides an exciting and mostly realistic representation of the sport.
  3. A dreadful-looking but surprisingly playable simulation of a truly complex game. [Feb 2004, p.84]
  4. Passing between players is slow and cumbersome, kick-offs are genuinely ugly, rucks are something of a lottery and to top it all off the game is far too easy.
  5. This is one that only the hardest of the hardcore should consider buying. Even then, wait for a used copy to surface at your game store. Casual fans will want to wait it out and see what next year brings. EA certainly has a lot of room for improvement.
  6. The game itself really doesn’t get that exciting, even during the last few minutes of a tight game, which is uncommon for a sports title these days.
  7. It is by no means authoritative, and it certainly won't convince newbies that the sport makes a worthy computer game.
  8. Attention to detail doesn't go far when core gameplay is this scattered. You could make a good rugby game for the PC, but Rugby 2004 isn't it. [Mar 2004, p.83]
  9. 30
When a game plays this poorly, authenticity doesn't save it. Rugby 2004 stinks of repackaged horror from the dawn of 3D gaming.

This is an insult to the great game of rugby. I'm just glad I bought it very, very, very cheaply, and that I can offload it to the ignorant and gullible. Full Review »
