Plagued by a ho-hum delivery and combat occasionally interrupted by redeeming boss fights, it fails to distinguish itself.

Sacred Citadel gets a lot of core mechanics right, and it's always fun to load up on powerful new loot. If you just want to run around and smash stuff and don't care about compelling antagonists or heroes, this does the job. But if you're looking for the total package, plenty of great alternatives are already out there.

The game is rather simple in design, but never felt boring even when the combat got far too easy. The character level progression was addicting, and co-op with some friends is a really enjoyable and implemented well.

If you have a hankering for a beat 'em up / RPG hybrid, you can do better than Sacred Citadel.

A nice presentation helps make things a little more interesting, but there's still no escaping the fact that Sacred Citadel fails to inspire much passion. It's an okay game, a solid arcade throwback, but it's a mere face in a crowd and doesn't stand out very much.

Sacred Citadel, then, is certainly of interest from a game design standpoint, but more as a warning that sometimes what sounds like a good idea actually isn’t. RPG elements have become more and more common in other genres of video games, but in this example of the side-scrolling brawler, they just don’t work.

This Sacred spinoff is basically a hack'n slash game. Its easiness makes it a short game, but it is not too expensive and still quite pleasant to play, with family or friends on the same screen.

Fine for an hour at a time, but shouldn’t be treated as anything other than a lower alternative to better games doing the same thing.

Despite the short playing time of four hours, Sacred Citadel quickly become a tedious treadmill.

The game is pleasant to look at but quickly became tedious and repetitive (even though it’s short – took me less than 4 hours to complete). There’s no challenge in it either – the enemies grow stronger, but the hero does that faster due to the character development system and new weapons. [CD-Action 06/2013, p.64]

Sacred Citadel should best be treated as a light romp while waiting for friends to log on to play something multiplayer.

There is some fun to be had, especially in multi-player, but nothing you haven’t seen before.

Sacred Citadel is a fine hack n’ slash side-scroller, and it’s even better with friends. The online netcode could use an upgrade and I wish there was a bit more content to flesh out the package, but for the price, Sacred Citadel is a solid adventure to be had. And it doesn’t force you into piles of menus to manage your character – that’s a bonus in itself, am I right?

A pale imitation of Castle Crashers with an empty multiplayer lobby.

For now, however, Sacred Citadel is only recommended for fans of the franchise or genre. There is fun to be had here but only in small bursts, so it's hard to recommend the $15 investment. With a disappointing combat system and ineffectual character progression, the game falls short of its potential.

Combat is quite repetitive. Fun to play while watching tv or listening to an audiobook at the same time...
    I wouldn't consider this a sacred
    game.
It does look like an IOS type game. Simple controls, blocky mid-rez graphics, very short in every respect. Story isn't worth mentionning imo.

Played through the game with my brother and we had a blast, definitely was more fun co-op than single player. Definitely worth it if ya liked the Golden Axe or Final Fight games. Full Review »

A relatively bland game void of any quality outside of some jokes here and there. This title is an obvious port aimed at IOS game consumers. Intended for a casual crowd who want zero challenge. The AI in this game is atrocious, most of them don't even feel like they are programmed to fight against a player but rather just spam attacks and wait for you to walk into them around the same time they are attacking. Simple spamming wins the game, intended as a game to play when on a train, bus or toilet. A sad money grab on the Sacred name. Full Review »
