The consistent thrill of Saints Row IV is how it constantly, eagerly, happily, accommodatingly asks you “Hey, how do you want to break the game now?” And for a game so colossal, so occasionally dumb, so often colossally sharks-with-laser-beams-on-their-heads-that-can-also-breathe-fire-and-fly-and-turn-invisible-and-you-can-even-ride-them dumb, what an incredibly smart thing to do with an open world, a franchise, and a story.

Volition it seems has made a new standard in over the top…no really I don’t think you understand… they went over the top before. Now they had to raise the bar in standards as well, just so they could go over the top of that.

A combination of sublime and ridiculous, Saints Row IV is outlandish fun. [Nov 2013, p.97]

Overall Saints Row IV is a marvellously enjoyable game, while still suffering from a few of the complaints that the series has always had. The main quests are great, and although the side missions are not painful to play, they don’t pack the same punch. If you played and enjoyed Saints Row The Third, then picking up this sequel is a must. Equally if you’re looking for a game that lets you act like a badass with special powers, this might be a better superhero game than many others that are actually billed as such.

Saints Row IV doesn't excel in terms of gameplay, but it hits a home run in terms of fun and laughter. The plot is both absurd and beautiful and the activities are so varied that one can easily forgive its faults. If you want a sandbox and you don't take yourself too seriously, Saints Row IV is a game you don't want to miss.

We think there's a story in there somewhere. Saints Row IV is weird. Too weird, in fact. And we love it for that exact reason.

The Saints Row saga can still be considered the most debauched franchise that lovers of free roamers could dream of. It has some good new ideas and the same shortcomings of the previous game, but it's a funny game nonetheless.

It is completely different from all of the ones before it, and it really shares little with the previous games in the series. If you didn't like SR 3 due to the sci-fi and super hero aspects, you might hate this game... a lot. If you're looking for something in the realistic criminal vein (ala Grand Theft Auto), you might hate this game.

The changes here are immense. It's like being in a mish-mash of every science fiction movie out there, with lots of elements/ideas coming straight from the Matrix.

Before you buy, check out some of the YouTube gameplay videos and make sure you're not going to hate it. If you go into this with the wrong expectations, you're going to be very disappointed.

The main quests are always fun and the humor is top notch, I guarantee you will burst out laughing at your computer (the voice actors doing the classical music radio are the best, you can really tell they had a good time doing it). There is a good amount of fan service and allusions to the previous games.
The gameplay itself is pretty solid. There are very few bugs despite the game being a physics sandbox with superpowers. The game does get a little too easy once you're sufficiently upgraded.
The only downside is that, while developpers actually made an effort to make secondary objectives seem important and fun (finally), it has made the main quest suffer from it and has made it very short as a result. I finished the game in 20 hours and did all the secondary objectives, I think it would take a little under 10 hours to finish the main quest, which is a bit short for this type of game.

Good if you're a long time fan of the series and don't mind a very wacky atmosphere.

This was short, shallow and felt like SRIII DLC.

The world was shallow and depressing (a la The Matrix), the music was genuinely bad and there was ZERO end game. The days don't pass and it's always dark. You can do something about that later, but not automatically.

Even while playing the campaign I felt alone; your associates are made of paper and lack the personality and humour they had in III. At one point you and your associate get into a discussion over an actual plot hole the writers thought it'd be cute to acknowledge the plot hole, make a joke of it and steamroll it rather than fix it. How insulting like I'd just pay for DLC and not care anyway because I'm too stupid. After all, all a blind consumer needs is someone to kill and something shiny to kill them with.

I really felt as though this were less a game and more an interface for DLC. They just made this game so they could sell me some imaginary clothes and cars for real money. I mean, that's quite often the case but you really FEEL it here- there's no attempt to finesse it, no effort put into earning it.

Time wasted on this "game" is time better spent learning something new or improving a real world skill. This pissed me off.
