Super Sanctum TD is a rather deep tower defense game in a nice little retro package.

When I first heard about Sanctum and how it was a cross between TD and FPS I was like "When will they make just a TD game" and finally my prayers were answered with this game. This game has so much charm... with the rise in popularity of 'retro' style 8-bit graphics this game has gained my vote as a beautiful game. The problem with TD games is they are made for casual gamers and to me this felt wrong... Super Sanctum TD has challenged that stereotype and really requires you to put some thought and effort into your play (Well at least for me xD).

TL;DR Just play this game; all it takes to fall in love with game is one level.

I'm about halfway through the game so far and have found some of the levels to be challenging, but generally not frustrating. I had some troubles with random crashing, usually on survival mode, and based on forum posts others had similar problems, but I was still able to play the campaign of 10 waves per map without issue. The maps have a mazing component, and you have a nice mix of weapons towers, and a fairly broad array of user enabled effects (like explosions, bombs, energy, freeze, force push, etc) that keep you active if you're not into having your towers do all the work. There's not much tower building that you'll be doing during the middle of waves as you generally don't accumulate enough points during a wave to build more than 1 tower mid-wave (bonus points are awarded at the end of a wave), so most building tends to happen in between waves - so that pretty much leaves you to focus on using effects during the waves which are more integral to the game than a more pure TD. It's not a positive or negative imho, but it's just different. Overall a fun game, but it won't compare to the production qualities of something like Defense Grid, which is the best TD I've played. The price on this game is pretty cheap now, so my rec would be give it a go if it looks interesting to you. Expand

Quite easy for vets of the genre until late when it gets impossibly difficult, but overall still plenty of good fun. Overall quite similar to Defense Grid... but 8-bit pixelated even-more-generic Defense Grid. Expand

This is quite possibly the most boring, tedious, and repetitive TD game I've ever played (that wasn't some free flash game).

Each level can go on for 30 minutes, and the enemies come out in similar orders during each wave. There is no variety. Each wave goes on for way too long. If I can beat the first minute of the wave, I can just repeat it 10 times during the rest of it.

The normal speed is tediously slow, and the fast-forward feels barely decreases the monotony.

You really have to be a masochist to play through this game because you'll probably die of boredom.

And then there are tons of quality-control annoyances on the PC version:
    - After defeating a boss, the game just sits there for 10+ seconds while you wonder what's happening.
    - There are often long periods of time between enemy spawns where absolutely nothing is happening
    - Full screen doesn't work well if you have a wide-screen monitor. The aspect ratio is off
    - The countdown timers tick about once per 2-3 seconds instead of once per second.
    - Lack of a tutorial or introduction.
    - Lack of options for video/audio/key settings
    - Tower boost doesn't boost all the highlighted towers
    - Level difficulty doesn't scale well

(Lastly, some reviewer here mentioned that this was a mix of a TD and FPS. I think he/she reviewed the wrong Sanctum game. This one's pure TD.)

I'm not going to waste more time with this review than the developers did on the game... but I've played sh!t in flash on websites(5+ years ago) for free that was comparable to this, if not more entertaining(Canyon Defense comes to mind). I'm starting to miss the days when flash games like this were free. Now they're sold on Steam for actual money, and for some reason, people are willing to pay for them. Granted I did get this for free, but most people will have to pay for theirs.

If you want a TD, do yourself a favor and go get Plants vs Zombies or Defense Grid instead. If you're going to spend money on a TD, get one that's actually good. Could have gotten Plants vs Zombies for 5$ off a sale or in a humble bundle. I think I paid less than 10$ for Defense Grid with all DLC. Don't waste your time with this crap.
