Team Indie tries and fails at creating a coherent world for its borrowed characters. It just asks for comparisons to all these other games, and none of them works in its favor. Brightside Games could not digest so many original titles at once.
Combining many indie games in one sounds great in theory, but the implementation isn't as good as in practice. Although it is a solid platform game, the puzzles and the collaboration between the heroes struggle to maintain the player's interest. At least if someone is inclined to overlook the game's problems, he will have some good moments with it.
Team Indie is a mix of old school platformer and innovative singleplayer coop gameplay. You play characters of popular indie games with different abilities. If you reach with one character a certain point you switch to another character to play simultaneously with the steps of your previous character. That offers funny puzzles and challenges with many variants. For people who love to collect something it's the perfect game. Sometimes you need to solve puzzles, do challenges or you need to explore the level to get every crystal, box and medal.
Allow me to start this review off by saying that this is one epic gem ****.
It's nine well-known Indie characters helping a kitty across the video game world. The game revolves around using the specific characters each level gives you, often with challenging puzzles that require using that character's special ability. After clearing a level (or a part of it) with one or more characters, you must play as Marvin the Cat and let the other heroes assist you by clearing paths of enemies and obstacles, in the exact way that you played them.
What I like about this game is the fast-forward feature. After all, it may take you a while to solve a puzzle, so when you're playing as the cat and waiting for another one of your characters to solve something, you can speed up time. I think that was a very well-implemented feature.
You can't go wrong with crossover games. When I was younger, I always played Nicktoons Unite as well as the games that came after it. For some reason, seeing characters from other universes working together sends happy chills down my spine, and this game pulled it off beautifully.
The level design was fairly good, I must say. As with most games, the earlier levels are far easier than the later ones. But, when you first come across a new character, their introduction level is often easier, to help you get used to their gameplay mechanics. These abilities are often very true to the character itself, and you must use them in ways that make you think outside the box, to complete levels as well as collect all the crystals and medal boxes hidden throughout the stages. The levels become very complex towards the end of the game, but not quite enough to make you rage in frustration. The game is hard, like most Indies should be, but it has that nice little spot on the difficulty scale that makes you want to keep playing and solve whatever part has you stumped. The game is fairly new at the time of writing this, so I never used any walkthroughs. At the end of a world, which contains about 10-20 levels, you'll be challenged to a boss stage to test your skill with your newfound characters. A really nice touch that I liked, was that each boss is based off a boss in another game in some way.
Another thing I enjoyed was how they used "runs." Each time you switch to another character, or reach some kind of checkpoint, and you die or "undo" the run, you get sent back to said checkpoint. You can go further back as you like, up until the very beginning, allowing you to practice more freely and not being too worried about messing up. Because, let me tell you, you will mess up a lot in this game.
The music is beautiful. It's simple in the first few levels, but as I entered the second world, it started to grow on me. I'm listening to it right now as I type this. In the credits, it says that the boss music was from Audiojungle, but I liked that nonetheless.
The gameplay is smooth, and the animations fit nicely to their respective character. It makes the gameplay with each hero feel like it has a lot of variety. My only problem with this game is a very small one; there will occasionally be a few glitches that send me flying through the wall or floor, unable to get out. As well, the second boss's hitbox seems to be wonky and much larger than it should be.
I am highly sleep deprived, so sorry if I missed anything. This game is amazing, and despite having unlocked everything already, I keep replaying levels because I had fun, which is what a game should be. People have said that this is merely fan bait, but when you think about it, doesn't every game have some sort of selling point that would make you want to play it? And Team Indie did a splendid job with that.
Recommended? Definitely. If I were you I would use that coupon and stack it with the release sale for a total 30% off. This is one of the most wonderful games I've played recently, and it certainly deserves to be more well known.
I wouldn't have known of this game's existence had it not been for that coupon I got.
Truly a masterpiece and a work of art. Well done, Brightside Games!
This game is all about manipulating time, which works okay. Unfortunately the level design is not inspiring. It is awesome to play with characters that come from other indie titles, but at the end of the game there are a lot of flaws.
Team Indie is a competent platformer with a unique, cute concept. Unfortunately, when put into action, playing as many famous indie characters reveals how good those original games were rather than make you excited to play this one.
Team indie brings together characters from some of the greatest Indie Games you have ever played and mixes them together in a fun way. Each level expends on the mechanics of each new introduced character making the levels more tricky the further you go. It does however have a slow start so don´t get discouraged in the beginning and continue playing. After a few levels the game difficulty ramps up and leaves you with the hearth of the game. The Game gives you this one more try one more level felling. Making you try again and again and again just to finish one more stage.
Team Indie is old school platformer. You will jump through a lot different kind of levels with increasing difficulty, collect as many diamonds and medals as you can to eventually reach a gate that leads to the next level. There is also a hero, Marvin, the cute but quite useless cat without any special skills. And here one of the specialties comes in: there are nine characters known from other indie games that are waiting for your you at many points in the levels. Once you reach one of them, you are controlling this hero with his or her unique features known form the original game. After reaching Marvin again you go back in time and continue controlling Marvin while the other hero repeats what you have done before. Sounds a bit confusing, but it's actually really straight forward after the first one or two levels. However, this whole hero switching thing provided a very cool and unique experience. After a few simple levels and character introductions, you need to carefully time all your actions and plan which hero to use when. This is no easy task, at least if you want to collect all the diamonds. As far as I know the characters from the original games, their controls feel very similar - not always 100% the same but always good and precise. Overall, it's very fun to figure out how to solve a level and I really like this combination of platformer and puzzler. But watch out: the good feeling after solving a puzzle can keep you playing till the end ;)
SummaryIn Team Indie a variety of indie game characters join forces aggregating their unique skills. Play coop with your own previous runs and bend time to master puzzles and action sequences.
