The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is one of the finest examples of how great an RPG can be.
  2. Jun 4, 2011
Tough, but fair. Consider it the price of admission to one of the most memorable and best written fantasy video games you'll ever play.
  3. Jun 3, 2011
CD Projekt has with The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings ruined all other games in the genre. With graphics from the future and gameplay from space, they have made this century's best RPG. BioWare has been ousted from the throne and will have to work very hard to reclaim it once again.
  4. Jun 1, 2011
Such a f..king treat. Rarely does a series so lavishly reward its fans for participating in a game's fiction as the Witcher series aims to do, but the fruits of CDProjekt RED's labor are readily apparent in Assassins of Kings, and a total joy to experience.
  5. May 27, 2011
It is quite simple. There is not a single modern RPG that can stand up to the story-telling and the convincing, atmospheric world of Witcher 2. In addition to this, CD Projekt simplifies gameplay mechanics wisely, without sacrificing the depth of the overall experience.
  6. May 23, 2011
The Witcher 2 embodies everything that's good about PC development, and everything that makes it, in my mind, the best platform out there. It tells a mature tale full of intrigue, mystery, and frustrating but satisfying combat, and while it is difficult (remember, there is no shame in playing on easy if you're having trouble; no one's going to take your gamer cred away from you for doing so), it's bound to please any RPG player who gives it a try.
  7. May 23, 2011
CD Projekt is trying to impress us with a beautiful Witcher 2, deeper and more fun. Finally, we find here the same flaws and the same qualities as in the first episode. The incredibly difficult fights (in the first hours), the unnecessary extras and the bad interface could have ruined the game, but The Witcher 2 will eventually conquer RPG fans with its world, its characters, its atmosphere and incomparable scenario. It's the Empire Strikes Back of video games. I can't wait for The Witcher 3!
  8. May 17, 2011
Truly a labor of love, this amazing sequel fortifies the foundations laid down by a flawed classic and creates a brilliant masterpiece. Visceral combat, dizzying player customization and a truly immersive story all come together to create one of the best role-playing experiences of the year.
  9. May 19, 2011
Geralt of Rivia fights against monsters of supernatural and human nature in this not-so-flawless but visually stunning and innovative RPG. While trying to save, not one, but four Realms at once, he also achieves the most difficult task of his career: redefining a whole videogame genre.
  10. Jun 8, 2011
In the end, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is a visually impressive game that contains a very sturdy gaming engine. If you haven't played a traditional RPG in awhile, the learning curve is a little steep and challenging at the start but once you have the experience under your belt and selected a direction for your character, battles will slowly become easier but fortunately there is always something along the way to challenge you. This is what RPG's are all about and I sincerely hope that this game will become the template for games to come on the PC.
  11. May 28, 2011
The Witcher 2 is everything that a good sequel should be. A continued story, yet one told differently and one that touches difference spheres of meaning. Restrained and realistic references to the original. Riskier, grittier, more confident presentation and design.
  12. May 21, 2011
The Witcher II is a technical, creative and narrative triumph, a game that pushes videogames closer to maturity thanks to an excellent and strong direction which honors Sapkowski's work. Not even the poor ending can eclipse the masterful RPG archieved by CD Projekt.
  13. May 18, 2011
If there's one aspect of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings that's worth singling out, it's the fact that it's not afraid to punish you when you make a mistake. This fact, more than the gorgeous graphics, the stellar script or the incredible depth that's been built on and around Andrzej Sapkowski's lore, is what defines The Witcher 2.
  14. May 16, 2011
Is it possible to create an accessible and modern game that's still an uncompromising, engaging and demanding experience? The Witcher 2 proves that it is definitely possible. Time spent with Assassins of Kings flies unbelievably fast. The player is thrown into a dangerous world full of betrayal, corruption, intolerance and battles for influence.

Kicking Dragon Age II in the crown jewels, then stoving its bonce in for good measure, it's one of the best adventures we've ever undertaken. [Aug 2011, p.84]
  16. Jun 8, 2011
The Witcher is very definition of a new and improved sequel.
  17. May 24, 2011
The Witcher 2 is bold, inspired, and not afraid to take some risks, but neither does it work overly hard to endear itself to less patient players. In the end, though, it's a no-brainer of a deal. This standout RPG is among the best in years, and one that simply begs for multiple playthroughs. If you have any sort of affection for this sort of game, you can't afford to miss it.
  18. May 20, 2011
The Witcher 2 exceeds every expectation. Assassins of Kings is a remarkably well-crafted, charming and violent RPG adventure, leaving players at its ending wanting for more. This new Geralt de Rivia adventure is superior to its predecessor in every way: A truly must-have.

  20. May 21, 2011
It's not common for an editor to beg a consumer to buy a game. This time I'm going to beg you to buy one of the greatest role playing games this year. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings definitely brings the RPG genre to a higher level. And damn, it's totally not linear either. Buy it!
  21. May 19, 2011
I play role-playing games to explore fantastic worlds, interact with interesting characters, and pull off *** stunts that only a world-saving hero could accomplish. The Witcher 2 obliterates all but the best competition on those criteria. As frustrating as it can be at times, this adventure's charms vastly outweigh its warts.
  22. Sep 14, 2011
The Witcher 2 easily stands amongst the big boys in the CRPG crowd and is also the best Action RPG to come out since Mass Effect 2.
  23. Jun 30, 2011
This is undoubtedly a must-have. A long, complex, deep and adult game, which becomes one of the best PC RPGs these last years, although its high difficulty level might set back some players.
  24. Jun 13, 2011
An RPG that is just begging to be played, packed full of visual treats and substance.

It's true that fights are maybe too simple, the GUI a bit awkard at first and the difficulty will kill you, so you need a little patience until the game is released from its shackles. And when it is… dark and loving, brave and treacherous, Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings offers almost everything you could want from a fantasy RPG.
  26. Jun 1, 2011
With its immersive world setting, nuanced choices that aren't clear cut good or evil, and large number of quests to eat up all your free time (and more!), Witcher 2 has become the game to beat in the RPG market.
  27. Jun 1, 2011
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is everything the first game should've been and more. Combat is swift and brutal. The graphics are gorgeous and the animations flows. The unfolding plot is well-written and compelling. It's shorter than its predecessor, but there's more replayability than in pretty much any other RPG in recent memory. Don't get me wrong – The Witcher 2 demands a lot of the player, in terms of both understanding the combat and understanding the plot – but for those willing to put in time and effort, this is a must.
  28. May 23, 2011
The Witcher 2 could be the best RPG on the market right now but it has several small problems inside its gameplay and some flaws with its design. The result is without any doubt a wonderful game that you can't miss.

  30. May 26, 2011
Quibbles aside, The Witcher 2 is an incredible achievement in graphical fidelity, branching storytelling, and just flat out smart gameplay. It's not as long as the first game, and the final chapter's story arc does feel rushed, but any issues are massively outweighed by the brilliance of this design.
  31. May 23, 2011
It's easy to lose yourself in the experience of The Witcher 2. Geralt's role as detective, exterminator, and hand of justice is just flexible enough to accommodate all types of role-players.
  32. May 19, 2011
The Witcher 2 is what Geralt's fans are looking for. Intense, epic and really fun to play, the latest CD Projekt title is a must buy for every RPG fan.

Witcher's hunt for kings murderer is full of carefully written tasks, characters and atmosphere. The new combat system does not detract from the beauty of the game but a few missteps and errors do. [June 2011]
  37. Jun 23, 2011
The Witcher has matured from a game brimming with potential to a milestone in rpg-history. The Witcher 2 offers a thrilling and well-polished adventure with all the raw brutality we crave. An instant classic.
  38. Jun 6, 2011
It provides a compelling and mature story, great combat (eventually), all wrapped up in what is clearly one of the most visually impressive games to be released in a long time.
  39. 90
The Witcher 2 provides one of the richest experiences I had with an RPG in recent times, especially in terms of characterization and storytelling.
  40. Jun 2, 2011
As with the original game, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings made me agonize over who to ally with, who to believe, and which side should benefit from a Witcher's skill. Every subtle choice suggestively pointed the way to further mischief and greater adventure. There's plenty to craft, imbibe, gamble and slay amid this twisting narrative. For me, it was the occasionally bitter fruit of consequence and the colorful characters cheerily serving it that made this a brilliant, rich journey into the deep mysteries and dark secrets of a land torn apart by the ruthless and the questionably virtuous. The Witcher 2 is an adventure that's well worth the coppers.
  41. May 30, 2011
If you've got the PC for it, you must buy The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, as it is not only an incredible experience but one of the best RPGs ever made.
  42. May 25, 2011
The ending of The Witcher 2 makes for a very big let-down. But rest assured: the rest of the game transcends all of the RPG-standards that were made over the last few years. It still eats away at us though, that the game could have scored an easy ten out of ten.
  43. May 24, 2011
The Witcher 2 is alternately offensive and endearing, grimy and gorgeous, and never ceases to surprise. It's one of the great titles of 2011, and one of the best role-playing games in years.
  44. May 24, 2011
Richly textured and stuffed with memorable moments, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is a marvel among role-playing games.
  45. May 23, 2011
Not even a terrible introductory sequence can take away from what is otherwise a fantastic game. Sure, the story is goofy, and at times the fighting is offensively clunky. The world isn't as colossal as the first Witcher's, and the ending is a bit of a tease. But in a time when I rarely bother to finish single-player games, I'm happy (and slightly embarrassed) to say that I'm already several hours into a second playthrough of Assassins of Kings. And I can't think of a better compliment than that.
  46. May 23, 2011
The Witcher 2 can be frustrating, but it's also a game that will suck you in and keep you talking about it for years to come...Frankly, it's the best game ever just for the giant chicken in the forest of penises. Stick that as our quote, Metacritic.
  47. May 23, 2011
One of the most ambitious, darkest, and legitimately smart additions to the genre you'll have the luck of playing. Just get yourself a bloody decent PC.
  48. May 20, 2011
There's simply no competitor that can touch it in terms of poise, characterisation and storytelling, or the way in which it treats you not as a player - someone to be pandered to and pleased - but as an adult, free to make your own mistakes and suffer a plot in which not everyone gets what they deserve.
  49. May 19, 2011
It's difficult to fully emphasize how immersive and impressive The Witcher 2 is. With their second game, CD Projekt has become the new champion of the Western RPG genre, blending a complex yet compelling story featuring truly impactful role-playing choices with a near-perfectly executed world.
  50. May 18, 2011
The Witcher 2 is probably the best RPG on PC. CD Projekt did a great job, creating an intense, deep and real fantasy experience, and giving players the freedom to choose their fate. If you are looking for a strong, mature and emotional game, buy this and play it for months.
  51. May 18, 2011
CD Projekt has delivered a truly epic RPG, that seems perfect with the exception of some very minor annoyances such as the AI.
  52. May 17, 2011
An absolutely stunning game with lots and lots to do for the dark fantasy fan. One of this year's greatest titles.
  53. Jun 18, 2011
Last minute collapse onto its own silver sword aside, this is one of the most impressive RPGs you'll ever play.
  54. May 19, 2011
When it comes to adult, nonlinear storytelling, The Witcher 2 is in a class of its own. Accompanied by outstanding visuals, carefully written characters and one of the most iconic heroes in the genre, the game exceeds many of our expectations. Unfortunately the ending is a little unsatisfying, there are some noticeable bugs and both controls and combat system leave quite a lot to be desired. The Witcher 2 is not perfect by any means, but it's a huge accomplishment nonetheless and ranks easily among the best RPGs of this year.
  55. May 19, 2011
The sheer power of storytelling is amazing and shows the way for other games. There are some bugs which could have been ironed out in a few more weeks of development time. But it's still a great game that feels like playing a fantasy novel.
  56. Jun 2, 2011
A worthy successor to its elder brother. Compared to what came before, it's a more mature experience - and a more complete game.
  57. Jun 30, 2011
Improves universally over the original, and also manages to be the best looking PC game at the same time. If you're a fan of meaty RPGs or if you've been desperate to stretch your computer's technical legs, you need to play The Witcher 2.
  58. Jun 27, 2011
All these things combine to what is arguably the best role-playing game of the year – or at least until Skyrim.
  59. Jul 1, 2011
By the end of the game, I found myself left with a distinctly ashen taste in my mouth; the victories are left hollow and incomplete. Partially because the ending doesn't fully resolve the numerous sub-plots of the game, but also because the storyline felt arbitrary and disconnected.
  60. Jun 10, 2011
With all the gore and grit of the original, The Witcher 2 once again delivers a solid and immersive return to the this rich fantasy world.
  61. May 31, 2011
For a game that was made without financial infusions from top-tier publishers, The Witcher 2 looks much, much better than all recent role-playing blockbusters combined.

The Witcher's universe is so ravishing and vast – you can't help but forgive CD Project for its bugs and clumsy combat system. [July 2011, p.89]
  64. Jun 18, 2011
Beautiful rpg with a great story and big choices that adds to the replayability. The controls and combat system are a bit clumsy though.
  65. May 31, 2011
Describing the opening moments of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings as a "trial by fire" is almost too trite to bear, but don't tell me it isn't accurate.
  66. May 25, 2011
Witcher 2's technical and design glitches didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying the game, however. It's one of the most realistic role-playing games I've ever tried - just like in real life, the decisions you make have wide-ranging effects, and you won't learn what those are until much later.
  67. May 25, 2011
I come away from this game with nothing but mixed feelings. Pretty much every aspect starts by exciting you, giving you hope that an RPG is finally going to be all the things you want it to be. But at every turn, it mocks you with "Just kidding!", ripping the rug out from under your feet and making you taste cold reality again. This back and forth relationship makes playing The Witcher 2 tiring. Everything is a battle against good intentions turned sour by fatal design flaws. It's one of those games that I don't regret having played, but I also wouldn't recommend it to a friend, either. And since that's exactly where the first game left me, I have little hope that the Witcher universe will ever be a place I feel at home.
  68. May 25, 2011
    Quotation forthcoming.
  69. May 25, 2011
But if it feels challenging, the fact that Witcher 2 is fiendishly hard from the outset is half its appeal.
  70. May 30, 2011
Some of the design choices are incredibly confusing and you might not want to play it again for a couple of months, but it does an excellent job of bringing Geralt's world to life.
  71. May 27, 2011
As a world-building exercise, The Witcher 2 succeeds masterfully but there are deep flaws in its game design.
  72. May 25, 2011
We expected a deep RPG experience and The Witcher 2: Assassins of King doesn't quite deliver on that front as much as its predecessor. I think the alteration of the combat system receives most of the blame for that...In short, frequent hack'n'slash style action puts less emphasis on tactics, character development or anything else that constitutes a really good role-playing game.
  73. Jun 3, 2011
Rather than creating a character, you're stuck as the brooding, white-haired monster slayer Geralt. Anyone who enjoyed the role last time will be happy to bear with him while the game meanders to its point. Anyone else will need an extraordinary level of patience.
  74. May 24, 2011
An ambitious and morally complex role-player, but one still limited by a poor script and half-broken game mechanics.
  75. May 23, 2011
It starts off as a deeply unsatisfying game which wants to punish players who try to enjoy it, then becomes rather endearing, with the acquisition of power and loot at least providing a traditional sense of accomplishment. When all's said and done, however, the game's high points arrive too late and provide too little. While hardcore fans will likely dive into the game and have fun, those who don't feel that they should be made for pay for a game with their patience will be put off.
  76. Jul 7, 2011
While it does indeed take a few steps in the right direction, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings doesn't live up to its own ambition.

The single best RPG I have played since Planescape: Torment. The characters are deep and complex, the storyline develops depending on your actions and choices. It takes what was good from every single RPG released in the last 15 years and makes it into something better. The graphics are simply the best ever seen in an RPG to date, if not the best that we have so far in any game (compare to Crysis if you want to). The flaws are few if any. The stealth sections are not the best, but they are optional, and there are a few bugs and such. There is no ACTUAL character customization, but you can change what the protagonist is wearing with quite a bit.
The combat system works quite well. It may not be the best combat system in gaming history, but it does exactly what is is supposed to do. But all that is just beside the point. The atmosphere, the music and the character lines are just amazing, combining to create one of the best RPG's of all time.
