  • Summary: Drill for oil like it's 1899! Turmoil offers players a visually charming, tongue-in-cheek take on the simulation genre inspired by the 19th century oil rush in North America.

Even with the upgrades and competition, Turmoil is the epitome of simplicity. It is more about betting against oneself when drilling, playing an extremely simple market, and exploiting upgrades for the most gain.

Turmoil plays like a casual game, but as you go along you quickly see that a lot of thought was put into it by people who really like to make games. I found it exciting and fun and just hard enough to keep me interested. If you like games that force you to put some effort in to them, I highly recommend getting it off Steam.

Turmoil is an addictive and pleasantly nostalgic management strategy. In the role of an entrepreneurial discoverer you try to get rich on oil production, but your dream of dollars spewing from the land will not last long. The game campaign soon becomes a stereotype.

Turmoil is an extremely simple game, and this is why it can keep the players tied to the screen for hours. On the other hand, repetitiveness is around the corner and despite the variety of situations faced in each level, you won't probably start a new campaign after finishing your first playthrough.

    Presentation

This game features 2D graphics that offer up a great sense of style and uniqueness. While there is nothing to crazy about this game's graphics, it still is a great looking game. When I compare this to another simulation game I reviewed earlier, Blueprint Tycoon, this game's color palette as well as how clean and crisp all of the drawing are, really make you appreciate how good this game looks. The colors are bright and all seem to go together. I also really like the low poly nature of the ground, it is made up of little triangles that you dig through as you are tunnels through it. There's nothing spectacular about the way this game sounds, but it is still a very solid sounding game overall. The sound effects are good, and it also sports a decent soundtrack as well. Overall the games presentation is pretty good.

    Content

I've been a little "meh" on content. Fortunately this game is pretty cheap, so it can almost get away with it. There's on one gamemode, just the campaign. That's certainly not a problem, as a lot of games only come with one gamemode. I'll touch more on this in the gameplay category, but this game does struggle with a little bit of repetitiveness. There's are a lot of upgrades you can get for your oil rigs, horses, dowsers, and the like which does help to make it feel varied and gives you something to aim for. But other than that, there is only one other gamemode called Single Game, which is just the campaign without having to get upgrades. You can pick your difficulty, your map, and the goal is to get the highest profit margin. Still it's the same gameplay from the campaign. If this game was more the $10 I wouldn't get it, but it's still pretty cheap and you can certainly put a good amount of hours into this game.

    Gameplay

Simplicity is the name of the game when it comes to gameplay. This is a pretty simple game to learn, as it does a nice job of introducing more and more gameplay options as you progress through the game. Basically your job is to find oil, drill the oil, and sell it to make money. That's it. There are a lot of upgrades that will better help you obtain oil, and you can bribe people to make sure that the oil prices stay high. This game does get pretty repetitive like I said earlier. There is as fair amount of management that goes on in this game, but it's nothing to hard. Basically it's just rinse, wash, repeat. There's really nothing to break up the days. Maybe you have to drill through some rock to get oil, or maybe you need to upgrade your dowser so he can find oil that's really deep in the ground, but that's about it. Despite that, the gameplay is good enough to keep you coming back.

    Overall

This is a very good simulation that gets a little repetitive. Great graphics, a good soundtrack, and good gameplay is what you can expect from the oil management game.
