The trench warfare offers a unique battlefield experience, immersing you and your squad into battles of attack and defense. The game takes place on the western front between 1914 and 1918, in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. The developers were inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun in 1916. The game offers 4 distinct game-modes: Frontlines, Attrition, Rifle Deathmatch, and Squad Defense. There are also many historically accurate features such as realistic WW1 weaponry, authentic uniforms, horrendous gore, and maps based on the real battlefields of France and Belgium. Expand

Much like the conflict that the game shares its namesake with, Verdun is a ferocious and tense multiplayer shooter the likes of which we haven’t seen in a long time.

Verdun is a welcome change of pace in the almost always hectic multiplayer shooter arenas. The rules offer a successful mix of realism and the usual unlocking mechanism. But there are not enough modes nor maps to keep you busy for too long.

Verdun is a brilliant FPS made of mud, trenches and death. It's not perfect but it's still evolving and has a lot of potential.

Verdun is a game for all those WWI aficionados out there, or for fans of historic FPS that for whatever reason are not covered by Red Orchestra 2. For the rest, there are better options available.

Verdun is a specific shooter, made for gamers that appreciate more authentic and realistic combat. Call of Duty crowd will be taken aback by the not very dynamic nature of combat, but the game can still provide a lot of thrills.

It is possible that Verdun will grow its own collection of free DLCs as it happened with Red Orchestra 2 and Insurgency. Blackmill Games has already promised to add flamethrowers, mortars, body armor, new maps, including the Eastern Front and more… However, right now this game is for military history buffs only.

Verdun somewhat succeeds in its lavish goal, but its road to glory is lengthy still. Until then, it sits on the edge of the line, waiting for the rallying cry.

Fantastic game. It's not life in the trenches, its death. and more death. When you think you cant be killed more...dead again. If you areFantastic game. It's not life in the trenches, its death. and more death. When you think you cant be killed more...dead again. If you are afraid of your pixels dying this isnt for you. This game isnt for the faint of heart gamer or "get rekt" CoD crowd. It has some intense action followed by moments of sheer mayhem. Grenades, mortars artillery, machine guns trench clubs and posion gas.... Its the "Spirit of the Bayonet " You either get it or you dont.

Without a doubt one of my all time favorite games. The Devs actually play the game and are very responsive to questions on the steam forum. The community, overall, is very supportive and helpful . Dont be fooled by the 36 player maps. You respawn continuously in "waves" to continue the assault or bolster the defense. 36 can seem like a hundred as waves are moved down or defenses overrun.

Verdun rewards tenacity. It has a steep learning curve- thats for sure. But there has been few games that have given me the sense of relief of solid defense, sting of defeat or "F yeah !" in victory like Verdun does.

I have accompanied this game since christmas 2013 and it's wonderful to see the evolution of a truly unique game.
Right now after the release from early access the player count is rising and rising and it's just a whole lot of fun to play in this very first WW1 FPS.

I think in that respect it succeedsVerdun is a game that really aims to be a realistic depiction of how war was fought during WW1. I think in that respect it succeeds brilliantly. This is trench warfare as it really must have been:

    - waiting around for the enemy, and then getting shot in the head from somewhere you never saw coming.
    - going "over the top" of the trench on command of your squad leader, and getting mowed down almost instantly.
    - Capturing an area, only to be hammered with chemical gasses
    - putting on your gas mask, obstructing your visibility so you can hardly see where (or who) you are shooting.

The gameplay is brutal and unforgiving, but hey, this is war! I love how the game doesn't make it "arcady" or easy. This makes it all the more rewarding when you get to kill someone.

The graphics and lighting are really nice too, being nice and muddy in the trenches, but has a good selection of more colorfull maps as well.

If you are not afraid of a challenge, I recommend it!

SoI have 51 hours in this game and I've been playing since the ALPHA that game out several years ago. The game showed promise back then. So what have they done with the game 4 years later? Add new guns and horrible map. Every new map they've put out since they alpha has just been horrid and are universally reviled by the community. Flanders... Champagn... Douaumont... just horrible.

That's besides the point, in the past few years all they've done is add new content, when this base game still feels like an alpha. The graphics are pure piss, the gun sounds sound like they're recorded from a drum set, but nothing compares to express how horrible the controls are... They aren't "realistic" they're just clunky and broken.

So why do people love this embarrassment of a game? Same reason I play it: it's the only ww1 game on the market. Once an actual good trench warfare ww1 game comes out this game will poof from existence. They seemed to have dodged the very large bullet that is battlefield 1 since bf1 isn't about trench combat, thus this game probably has another 2 years left in its life.
