Video Game Fables makes for a very good title for those who want something new yet traditional in a condensed form. The world is of a decent size with a ton of quality-of-life additions that cleave out the more tedious parts of the genre. The XP system is deep and thoughtful, while the battle system provides a good amount of depth if you're willing to commit actions to memory. It's all wrapped up in a story that provides a few laughs and a presentation that might be an acquired taste. It's a sleeper title that every fan should check out, despite it coming in a year flooded with big JRPG releases.
Overall, Video Game Fables is a solid RPG experience, and is even more impressive when you consider that it was made by just one person. It’s quirky, it’s cute, it’s addicting, and it never takes itself seriously. Even if you’re burnt out on turn-based RPGs, I think there’s still a lot to enjoy here. While not a perfect game, it’s an undeniably enjoyable and delightful one.
Video Game Fables does a fantastic job telling a light-hearted story that deconstructs the RPG genre. You can’t help but laugh when something ridiculous is pointed out or a character tries something unexpected. Gameplay is solid for an RPG, while the visuals and audio work well to contribute to the light-hearted atmosphere. Camera angles can be a problem, and combat can feel repetitive without large character differences. Despite those minor shortcomings, you will still have lots of fun reversing roles and poking fun at the RPG genre.
Video Game Fables is a twist on your classic turn-based RPG with new fighting mechanics and an original story with a great sense of humour and non-typical heroes forced to save the day. There is a lot of grinding required but the system to level up your characters and weapons is interesting.
I’m not going to lie and say that Video Game Fables is ground-breaking, or worthy of game of the year. But what I will say that it is an entertaining, light-hearted, and satirical take on JRPGs. It’s turn based gameplay is complex, and offers a numerous amount of customisation options. The art style, while certainly an acquired taste, fits the surrounding narrative exquisitely. Musically, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but composer Levc EGM certainly shows some promise as an up-and-coming artist. If you’re a fan of RPGs, and can mange to pick this up on sale, then I’d recommend giving it a shot.
Video Game Fables is a solid if simple RPG that suffers from the baggage of its meta nature. The lighthearted dialogue will make you smile and there are glimpses of compelling RPG design strewn about the experience. The game just never truly rises above the height of the conventions it seeks to overthrow, which given the subject matter, is a distracting misstep that weakens the overall experience.
SummaryFunny, lighthearted RPG with fast, unique, challenging, turn-based combat set in a creative, colorful, abandoned game world that hasn't had a player in decades.
