  1. Vietcong can provide some tense and enjoyable gameplay, but also serves up some very frustrating levels that will try the patience of many gamers. With a bit more polish and consistent level design Vietcong would be a really good game.
  2. They've managed to make a consistent game world and suck the player into it. The fact remains, however, that including more mundane and frustrating elements of real world warfare is a double-edged blade, especially when some of the other technical elements of your game are not up to snuff - like the AI, or clunky engine.

While it delivers a much better Vietnam combat experience than you might expect, the graphics can be problematic. [July 2003, p.76]

Vietnam was hell, and it's translated well in that way, but unfortunately it just doesn't pass muster leaving us with an average game that could have been great.

Satisfies as a polished-looking shooter, but needs a more energetic design. [June 2003, p.70]
  6. A flawed but rewarding experience seems to be the average diagnosis for most of the current crop of FPS releases, and Vietcong is no exception.
  7. But if you can bear to put up with the obvious lack of polish in the graphic and AI department, (similar bugbears that "Hidden & Dangerous" players will confess to), then there's a very absorbing FPS to get to grips with here.
  8. 69
Despite all its strengths, it's just much too buggy and unpolished to recommend wholeheartedly.

    Excerpt forthcoming.
  10. 60
While being by and large a straight-forward action shooter, it's really aching to be a tactical shooter, and in that vein it's a pity there's not more control over your team members.
  11. A very average FPS. While the framerate and graphics engine are a big letdown (these are the same folks responsible for the stellar gangster hit "Mafia"), there is surely enough going for it to turn the heads of jungle warfare aficionados and gamers who just crave anything FPS.
  12. Edge Magazine
    50
Repetitive and crude, this is a game that is often let down by the rough edges of a development team that didn't seem to have the time or the money to realise its ambitions. [June 2003, p.102]

Best FPS shooter I have played, ever. I like that's it's a bit more realistic than comparable games. Also, I much prefer the Best FPS shooter I have played, ever. I like that's it's a bit more realistic than comparable games. Also, I much prefer the fighting in the jungle and open landscape to the dungeons, houses and subways of other games. MUCH better than Black Hawk down, also. Funny the game mags gave it mad marks while all who play it love it. Maybe the distributor doesn'T buy anough ads to please the game mags. Full Review »
