Truth be told, 1UP recently held a group "review" session that lasted late into the night. After a few beers, some leaps off the couch, about 8 renditions of Boston, countless moments of faux-rockstar posturing, and actually stomping so hard that we broke the disc during the thundering finale of "Take Me Out," everyone seemed to agree on a score for Guitar Hero... But our scale only goes up to 10.
  2. The single best addiction you can play on the PS2 this year... perhaps ever. [Actual score = 11 (or 110), a la "Sinal Tap", but our scale only goes up to 100, so if you need that extra little push over the cliff, just get the game.]
  3. I'm beyond impressed with this game. It retains a lot of guitar technique and doesn't cater to the attention-span challenged, dance-game crowd.

Very creative and very fun to play! No matter if you are a real guitar player or someone who never touched an musical instrument before, you going to love this game! The song selection is awesome! The kind of game that brings anyone’s attention, for the first time I can play a game in the presence of my girlfriend without hearing any complaints. Expand

Ok, I guess the big selling point of the game is that "it's like playing a real guitar," but as a guitarist, I know this isn't true. Let's examine this closely. The guitar that comes with this game is plastic instead of wood and it has no strings, tuning machines, metal frets, pickups, input jack, tone or volume knobs, truss rod, bridge, or bridge saddles. Plus, and this is a biggie, on a real guitar you don't play by pressing down on five colored buttons, you hold your fingers on different frets of different strings to make a variety of tones.. A real guitar is plugged into an amplifier using a quarter inch guitar cable. The Guitar Hero controller plugs into a Playstation 2 Video Game Console, which is very different from an amplifier. So don't let people fool you, this is not anything like playing a real guitar. The only reason I give this game a five out of ten is because the songs rock. Expand

This is just another PaRappa the Rappa ripoff like Amplitude and Guitarooman and Leisure Suit Larry. Come on, PaRappa is almost 10 years old, let's stop trying to copy it. On top of all that, the characters in the game don't even look real. One of them is even the Grim Reaper... yay... that's cool... I guess.... if you worship Satan. Expand
