  1. The Life shows potential and there is definitely room for improvement. It shows that sports games can have decent story modes. The actual gameplay in the game pales in comparison to other, more refined PS2 basketball games.
  2. The Life gameplay mode is a very good idea that could use some more polish, as could in-game play. It's come a long way from its previous installment, but it's still not breathtaking, nor is it breaking new ground.

The game veers just slightly away from being sim to drive more directly towards being fun.
  4. The focus on the player rather than the game seems like a brilliant idea, if not for the repetitive story and visual glitches along the way.
  5. Action in the low post can be a mess, the AI is off. [Jan 2006, p.139]
  6. Sony gets itself back in the playoffs with this one, thanks to a great career mode and much-improved on-the-court action. [Holiday 2005, p.80]

The Life is an innovative addition to the genre that indicates to me that Sony is serious about sports games again.
  8. Shows some promise with their Life mode and the graphics could even be overlooked but the control interface needs some work.
  9. In the year that it was away, NBA 06 included a new story mode that’s rather engaging, but hampered by the mini-game presentation that advances the plot of the game.
  10. 69
Add in the fact that the controls lack the necessary response time needed to compete effectively, and it’s easy to see why the game can't meet the promise of an innovative story feature, an excellent shooting interface, and a robust online option.
  11. Sony took a year off from the NBA scene. Unfortunately, it seems like they could have used another year with NBA 06.
  12. Although the shot method utilized in this game is great, average graphics and other control issues, combined with some questionable A.I, bring down the overall score of this title.
  13. Unfortunately, holes in the core gameplay mechanics and the lack of a standard dynasty mode leave NBA 06 as more of a curiosity than a must-have for basketball fans.
  14. The graphic engine and framerate really fail the gameplay engine, which had some very nice controller setup.
  15. There are too many glitches, the graphics are poor and the game just isn’t fun to play.
  16. Sluggish controls, load times and some balance issues create a game atmosphere that moves from the possibility of entertaining to frustrating rather quickly.
  17. While NBA '06 featuring “The Life, Volume 1” is not revolutionary at the core, I personally believe more immersive experiences like this are the way sports gaming is headed. I’m very excited for it.
  18. NBA 06 is a tale of features over gameplay – and that's kinda sad seeing how skimpy the feature set is.
  19. The online is decent if you can stomach the gameplay enough to get into it; and the mini-games do offer some fun diversions. But “The Life” is undercut by poor fundamentals and the restrictive nature of the animations and controls.
  20. 40
Ultimately, you'll be much more satisfied playing "2K6" instead or even EA's "NCAA March Madness 2006" for basketball purism.
  21. Even a little sprucing up on the presentation front doesn’t change the insurmountable gameplay problems that make their NBA 06 particularly sour.
  22. 60
The game could also benefit from more dynamic camera angles and a more exciting presentation with color stat overlays, sideline close-ups, and so forth. The developers opted for a realistic, on-court feel by removing play-by-play announcers, but the crowd and music fail to pick up the slack.
  23. To put it simply, there are so many small fundamental problems--the passing feels stiff and has some weird bugs that cause the ball to fly off in random directions (not to mention the fact that the AI, while mostly consistent, does have a tendency to cheat a little bit when intercepting passes, at least more than any human opponent would).
  24. Not only is that stupid and predictable shooting system back from those PSP games, but this title's developers have managed to suck out the very essence that is NBA basketball and discard it like a peanut shell.
  25. 40
Bottom line: this is a bad basketball game. The last Sony-published hoops title, NBA ShootOut 2004, was extremely solid, so these massive leaps backwards befuddle me to no end.
  26. All in all, the idea of "The Life" mode is more interesting on paper than it is in actual execution.

It can be a little frustrating at times, but isn't that what video games are all about. I mean having to spend countless hours on one level is just a given really. So I give this game a ten, because not only are the graphics good, but it also puts a new spin on an old concept. Full Review »
