It has a pretty unique feel and does some things that are different than you normally see in the genre.
  2. Their gameplay was unlike any that came before, and it followed a comfortable rhythm. Okage: Shadow King has its charm. But it is, ironically, too off-kilter for me to consider it a cult classic.

The game’s battles look nice and move quickly, but the character animation is stiff, and the menu is too clunky and confusing given the limited number of battle options at your disposal.
  4. If you want to play an RPG that doesn’t pretend to be a dramatic tale or one that won’t require a lot of your time, Okage is a good choice.
  5. The only shadows Okage: Shadow King is going to be ruling at my house are the ones under the stack of other games I'd rather be playing.
  6. It's thin story, shallow characters and less-than-inventive battle system is only made worse by the excessive loading.
  7. While visually diverting, Okage is only slightly above average overall.

Spends too much time trying to achieve a kind of “Nightmare Before Christmas”-level of cool weirdness, rather than keeping the player playing. [Dec 2001, p.244]

There's one big problem. There's no game here. [Dec 2001, p.170]

Instead of a gourmet dinner, we get something heated up out of a can; it’s filling, it doesn’t actually taste bad, be we never get that feeling of satisfaction that comes from eating a truly great meal.
  11. Though it has plenty of rough edges, the wacky cartoonish graphics and the bizarre sense of humor compensate nicely. Excessive loading is obnoxious.
  12. Now, once you get into the traditional elements of the RPG such as battle, the comedy continues. While the zany names get old, as well as the dialogue, the game is pretty funny overall.

So as always the press gives the score they want without taking into the consideration what the game tryies to give. I remember this launched a little before FFX, and some magazines were comparing the games for whatever reasons.
OSK never wanted to be a FF and will never be like one, it's funny and clever with awesome characters and good music. Yeah, it's simple, but it's the point. So if you like funny games with good characters, plot and music, this game is for you, good challenge in battles also, though i not a game to spend countless hours grinding, so keep that in mind. Then If you want to play a Xenogears kind of game, this is far from that.

So that's it, this game is very underrated and I hope that if you are into this, you give it a chance.
