  1. A fine addition to a flagging empire. [Aug 2009, p.119]
  2. Nope, it's nothing so revolutionary as to woo haters, but for fans, it's a welcome return of the best of the offshoots.
  3. You're getting the combat and battlefield strategy of the regular titles, combined with some of the more strategy-like elements of the Empire series.
  4. 80
Endless variations on battles and the ability to customize characters make this game a good value for serious fans. People looking for less involvement and hack-and-slash may want to rent or avoid this title altogether.
  5. Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires had nice-looking visuals, but the strong point was its great beat-em-up combat. At the very least, it is a good quality game for the price.
  6. 68
Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires is ultimately more of the same tired Dynasty Warriors gameplay, but the added strategic elements -- both in the expanding of your territory and mid-battle base management -- really help this game out.
  7. Ultimately, the problem with this title is the same as other Dynasty Warriors titles: lack of substance. Though there are some improvements over Dynasty Warriors 6, it's just enough to make this a standout title.
  8. If there was a series that could really use a reboot, reinvention or a break Dynasty Warriors should be it. The series has been doing the same thing over and over again for so long and it's not doing enough to entice new players to the series.
  9. 65
This isn't the first Empires game to release for Dynasty Warriors but it is one of the most refined. Ultimately, you get some Dynasty Warriors action inside a Romance of Three Kingdoms game.
  10. You are a fan of simple, nearly dumb, hacking and slaying while watching the same chars and maps over and over? Then Dynasty Warriors will please as much as you want.
  11. Mowing down wave after wave of comatose fodder kills any chance of this game's strategies having any meaning. An overhaul on the battlefield is sorely needed.
  12. Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires didn't meet the target. Non significant innovation has been introduced, to the point it risks to be just another forgotten warrior. Being a fully priced expansion, we recommend it only to real fans.
  13. If romancing the three kingdoms is your thing, you're going to go bananas for this already-established RTS twist on the DW franchise. Otherwise, it's totally niche, so approach with caution. [July 2009, p.81]
  14. It's another Empires iteration of a Dynasty Warriors game, and it comes with all the tedium and light strategy you'd expect.
  15. Gaming's most prolific, but least pioneering, series ruins its best spin-off with an overdose of deja vu.
  16. Press any key. Repeat. That's all.
  17. A sub-par romp through what we've already seen many, many times before.
  18. Unless you're desperate for more DW action, leave this alone. [Aug 2009, p.77]
  19. 44
Improvements have been made, but Koei's catering to its market here. [Issue#181, p.85]
  20. It may be fun, but no amount of political (and entertaining) backstabbing can hide the fact that, at the end of the day, this is still Dynasty Warriors 6 with a slight incentive to keep hacking and slashing.
  21. Unfortunately, for everything that Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires does right, it does several things to remind you that this is the exact same game as DW2, way back in 2000; from the combat to the graphical design and quality, the series has been treading water for years.

Very bad.... The same game, with better graphics. The gameplay still horrible. There are no cut scenes with the history, that were so cool in the others empires releases. I just played to get the trophies. Full Review »

Game is simple enough to learn and to play randomly without having to get into a big story, yet deep enough to keep you hooked for all night sessions. I have found myself turning this game on for just one battle as well as sitting all night all hyped up on Rockstar's. I gave it an 8 instead of a 10 because there is room for bettering in the fact that I wish there was a little more customization and I wish there was a free roam or "arcade" style like before instead of only being able to play the "empire mode" which is the story mode. This doesn't make that much of a downside but it is something that could be done like prior DW's. I also like the fact that instead of square/triangle button combos that they integrated "specials" by holding L2 and whatever button you wish to coordinate. I specifically like the combo of "double" and "steal" which would then make a double of yourself and then steal gold from the opponents with every hit. The addition of "Empire Mode" is a wonderful aspect, being able to leave certain kingdom leaders for others is great however I wish they would incorporate something like a "relationship" meter so you know where you stand with each leader, you can easily leave and come back however many times without really any punishment. All n all a great game to zone out on and slash the night away, this game keeps me entertained until the best hack n slash ever comes out later, Diablo. Full Review »

I have to admit i have mixed feelings on this one. We all know the Warriors series has become simple updates of each other, but what does that matter? The game is still incredibly fun, and has a great story based on the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" novels. Number 6 in the series was a huge letdown for me, i don't like the new combat system at all. It simply feels dumbed down. However, the Strategy phase of the game is executed almost flawlessly. The strategy phase of DW5: Empires was bigger, but also harder to use, which pushed gamers away from the game. DW6: Empires fixed this, and the new mode is very easy to use and navigate. Overall, this game is a great addition to the series, and i am looking forward to the next installment in the series. 8/10 Full Review »
