While I was part of the minority who thoroughly enjoyed the first Killzone, I have to say that Killzone 2 is a major leap forward for the franchise. Guerrilla has taken their FPS & made it a gritty, visceral experience that gave me an honest sensation of uneasiness about entering its fields of combat (yes, I almost felt afraid to enter the game it immersed me that much). They have achieved this not only with incredible graphics & environmental detail (from lingering dust in the air & your rifle scope after close explosions to rebar seen under bullet shattered concrete pillars), but they have succeeded in fleshing out the Helgast enemies. They are no longer just the 2 dimensional cardboard cutouts that pop out in fixed locations for me to shoot. From the opening speech of Helghast leader, Emperor Visari (again masterfully portrayed by Brian Cox) I knew this wasn't going to be any ordinary arcade shooter. Guerrilla has given us an enemy as tenacious & fanatical about fighting off invaders of their homeland as the SS was in the later days of World War II. They run & duck under cover when shot at and they cry out in pain when shot. The have become actual characters for me to know & fear. People who have long forsaken any diplomacy (I say people because I felt like I was fighting people, unlike other games such as COD4 online, while a superior game, still felt more like a game of tag) Alas, there is a little bit on the down side. Some of the in game dialogue did get a bit repetitive (Nice shot! yadda yadda) & somewhat juvenile. But even that wasn't enough for me to drop the score down a whole point. This is a game that deserve every one of its five stars from Playstation Magazine. To me, well worth the new release price. Expand

This game is seriously the BEST FPS i've ever experienced. The online is awesome, the story is amazing. The graphics are jaw dropping. What more do I need to say?? If you own a PS3 then you MUST get this game, you won't regret it. If you don't have a PS3 then I feel bad for you LOL! KZ2 for the win! Great job Sony & Guerilla Games!

A great game and what's amazing is just how much the developers managed to improve from the first game. Which was not a bad game but at the time it seemed like a game that would not spawn a franchise but after this game you need to get ready for Killzone 3 and I myself cannot wait.

One of the best shooters I've ever played. Definitely deserves to be up there with other fps juggernauts such as Halo 3, Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare, Golden Eye 64, and Crysis. Pros : A solid single player campaign with an unforgettable ending. The voice acting in the single player campaign for most of the game is top notch. combine it with an intriguing story about the struggle between the ISA and the Helghast and you have yourself a winner. 32 player online matches with an actual clan system. Create a clan, recruit members, and battle other clans in scheduled tournaments for "Valor" points. Badges allow you to mix and match various abilites which are unlocked as you rank up. Feel like practicing a bit before going head to head with other gamers online? Bots are available for just that. Highly detailed environments with amazing lighting and excellent sound make the levels come alive. Cons : Corny dialogue. Some of the dialogue in the game just seems plain silly at times and will make you pretend you didn't hear that. Controls feel somewhat sluggish and will take some getting used to, but by no means do they break the game. Lack of Co-op. A lack of a cooperative mode was a slight disappointment, an already amazing single player campaign would've been a blast to play through with a friend or two online. Final verdict : Definitely a game any fan of the fps genre should get Sony's Playstation 3 for. Lack of Co-op aside, Killzone 2 has everything a first person shooter enthusiast would look for in a solid first person shooter. Expand

The BEST FPS on the PS3. PERIOD. I own both Resistance 1 and 2, Bioshock, Half-Life: The Orange Box, and more..and Killzone 2 blows them away!

If you're a PS3 owner, you need this game to show to you all your friends. If you're a FPS fan, you need this game.

If you are debating about buying this game then dont cause it is worth every penny. The graphics are better then anything i have ever seen there are some parts in KZ2 that look better then crysis and pc fans said a console could never look better then crysis bull crap. The AI is really impressive so if you try to hide they will flush you out anyway they can. Now the friendly AI isnt as good as the enemy AI but it is still good. The story is pretty dang good also not better then MGS4 but it is good. The music what words can i say to describe the music other then the best in any video game to date if you dont have a surround sound system get one cause the music is amazing. Overall this game is epic and will be remembered for a very long time people will be comparing future games to this game. What are you waiting for quit reading and go get this game right NOW! Expand

The single player is good and well paced, but could have been better. The selling point for it is the excellent and extremely addictive multiplayer, offering up to 32 players online, it can be the most hectic online offering available on a console. Top that off with the prettiest console graphics this generation, and you've got a winer. For the most part, Guerilla made good on their promise from that old 2005 E3 trailer. Expand

This is the game that redefines the term "new generation". It is the kind of game that this generation of consoles should have brought since the beginning. It's a true evolution. With excellent A.I., animations, campaign, gameplay, multiplayer, its easily the best FPS this generation. It's a must-have for every PlayStation 3 owner, and first-person shooter fan. This game is amazing, the sounds effects are incredible and the level of immersion is unmatched. Graphically, I've never seen anything like it on a console game. Gameplay takes a bit of getting used to, but once you've played an hour or so you realise it is top draw. I had heard the storyline was weak, however I found it solid and got engaged in the characters. Anyone who enjoys the FPS genre and has a PS3 must get this game! Expand

This is a good game, don't let the haters tell you otherwise. Sure it doesn't reinvent the wheel and a couple times even feels like it lifted stuff directly from other games, but there's still something to be said for a game that does everything well. The controls and aim take a while to get used to but once you do, you will find Killzone 2 delivers an overall package that any FPS fan or PS3 owner can enjoy. This is the PS3's answer to the Halo and Gears of War franchises, giving the console a quality exclusive FPS to call its own. It's not a "killer" of those franchises or any other series, but it is definitely a rival. Expand

Killzone 2 sports amazing visuals & will be known as one of the best FPS's this gen. A 8 hour highly polished, simply outstanding single player game with a unique & successfully implemented First Person Cover System will keep the gameplay as fresh as it is, even though it suffers from "been there, done that" puzzle/shooting elements this is still one of the most brutal & unforgiving single player campaigns in years. It truly takes the status of 'War Perfected'. Also sporting an in-depth online stat & gameplay/squad system this is the next mainstream online experience for all the CoD muthas out there.
Presentation-10/10 There's not much to say here. You just have to experience it for yourself.
Graphics- 9.5/10 One of the most graphically & technologically impressive games ever. The best parts being Lighting & Animations.
Audio 10/10 With an intense & rich orchestral score and the real sense of being put in this intensely immersing war zone the Audio is the best achievement of this game.

The level of detail and variety of gameplay is stunning. This game once agian has went over my expectations. Graphics are the best I have ever seen in an interactive genre. Story is very dramatic and movie like. The only draw back about this game is the controls that have been improved dramactically due to the patches and you are able to change them in the options. So controls are no problem anymore. As of multiplayer? Just wow! This game is like as if Moder Warfare and BattleFront made a baby and Killzone 2 came out. Must buy for all Playstation users. Expand

Great game but the controls weren't as tight as would be expected for the amount of development time.. Gorgeous game, most realistic animations i've seen yet. opening cutscene is epic, and the game just feels massive in scope and immersive. enemy is varied, and looks great. its nice to have an epic looking enemy, ones that look like they actually pose a real threat. design in this game makes everything look really awesome, but everything is designed for utility... for a sci-fi shooter, nothing seems too weird or misdesigned. The best FPS game ever, with a great cover system which allows you to take cover behind anything, which you will have to do if you want to survive, to the very challenging Elite mode in single player. The graphics and surrounding are really good to look at (as long as you're not being ambushed by Helghast) since there is always something happening, whether it's something beign blown out of the sky, or a massive electrical storm. The only downfall I found from this was the lack of cut-scenes, most of it is all in-game speaking on what you're doing next then you're suddenly transported there. I wouldn't ask for cut-scenes like MSG4, but at least ones that lasted for a few minutes to keep the story flowing more smoothly. Expand

What can you say about a game that in all reality brings nothing new to the genre? You can say that it has perfected so many aspects of the typical FPS that it defies description, and that's not an easy feat! Did I say perfect? I think I did! Is it the same "save the world" type story? Sure. Still a FPS that tells you where to go next (take out that tank, go down that ladder)? You bet. Think about that Ford Mustang sitting next to a Ferrari, they both go fast, but one is clearly in a league of its own. And it's not just the campaign, online multiplayer is every bit as intoxicating. It's a shame that certain fanboys will knock this game and never take to the time to enjoy the best FPS we have seen so far. Expand

By sound and graphics alone this game deserves a 11/10 it is the best game to have ever graced a console to date. I care less about the story but the game play was very fun, specially the desert level with the bolt gun, best fun I've had since Goldeneye on the N64!. I LOVE the mech suit or Exo whatever it's called I hope to see it in multiplayer. The multiplayer just brought it over the top, the incessant changing of the game modes and chaos keep me wanting to play all night and unlock everything. Anyway, I'm glad I bought this game, I was waiting for something like this to showcase my 7.1 home theater and HD projector. This game is easily the best FPS on PS3 the environments and character detail is amazing. But games are not all about graphics, some might say the controls are sluggish but I personally think they are perfect for a controller to get the right feeling of turning in the real world not as supermen turning at the speed of light as in most moused controlled PC games. The cover system is fantastic in single-player and although the gameplay is mainly cover-then-shoot then repeat the enemy's constant movement makes every situation fun to play thru time and time again. The multiplayer set-up is one of the best I've seen so far meeting up with friends in any game type is simple and quick the option of playing all game types in one round is brilliant as all skills are tested. There aren't many things i can say that are bad about this masterpiece except for 1.) The aiming system for the sniper rifle - using the six-axis is a bit corny and unnecessary as it just annoying not useful. 2).The damage that some enemies have to take is ridiculous, their humans not bugs off starship troopers ffs If you own a PS3 this game is a must!!! This game is the best looking FPS ive ever played or even seen. The only thing that doesn't make this title a bonified Halo killer is the lack of two player head to head. Come one, zero coop? For those who said the aiming was bad, no. It's just you suck at aiming. You may want to go into optionas and adjust your control settings...i cant wait for killzone 3.

Some people may find that the controls are "bad" but I think they feel like this due to the realistic game physics. You can actually feel the heavyness of your character unlike other FPS where you just feel like moving a camera around. For this game you have to get used to the controls first and then you will enjoy it at it's best The multiplayer mode is really entertaining. Players need to play tactically to achieve victory, the atmosphere is stunning. Players will feel like in a real war, good sound, good maps design, good servers, good gameplay. This game really is the best FPS I have ever played. Its everything that an FPS SHOULD be, frantic, chaotic, intense, gory, and difficult. Starting with singleplayer, it is definitely the best FPS single player I have ever played. I cant say best single player, but its AMAZINGLY good for FPS. The enemy AI is superb, they will flush you out, flank you and cut you down. Its a real challenge. And they are such imposing tagerts too, red eyes, deathly voices and a unqestionable willingness to die for helghan and to take you down with them as they die. Its INTENSE. The story is actually great, if you read it on KZ.com, but its not expressed right in the game, leaving many to feel there is none, especially those who have not played KZ1. Online is where I think it shines. Frantic battles, chaos, grenades going off, ATACs shooting from above, turrerts from below, invisible snipers on your tail, saboteurs disguising themselves as your team, tactical insertion points..... its just amazing. Sure, the controls are a bit heavy, but give it a week. Once you get used to them, you wil love them. Turn up the sensitivity on the options will ease it up even better Any FPS fan should own this game Expand

Stunning visuals and enormous replay value (especially with the online multiplayer) are the biggest plusses that this ps3 exclusive has to offer. It lags noticably in the single-player story campaign and the controls can be quite cumbersome at first. But when it's all said and done the package is complete and hella satisfying. It is a great multi-player game. I think that network hit detection is one of the best I ever seen. If you go face to face with someone you and both of you shoot each other at the same time both will die. That just does not happen often in other games. I think that time to kill is about perfect. The game can be played in organized manner, but it is not forced onto the player. Good organized teams will have no problem dominating the map.

Add to this a good set of well designed maps, several fun modes, ability of users to create your own custom online games, password protected games. You can play against AI bots and with AI bots and you can invite your friends to AI bot game as well.

The single player story is fun. The end game fight is not fun and feels like a cheap way to make battle tough. If you read online on the final fight you will find that many people say the same about final fight.

I have played major online shooter games:
All of Call of Duty games starting with 4 (fun, but got worse with every release after CoD 4)
Medal of Honor (crap) Resistance fall of Man (original). It is good, but it is not fun by now.

Killzone 2 is by far my favorite online shooter game out of the listed above.

The single player is well paced and action packed enough to enjoy despite the lack of a strong storyline. The multiplayer is incredibly addictive. It's a skill based FPS and one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. There is a tough learning curve that is very rewarding once you master the controls, weapons, maps, strategies and ultimately other players in the online multiplayer.

This is my first metacritic user review. I signed up just to praise this game really. It's my favourite PS3 game (at least right now), and it's my favourite shooter across all platforms. It's just an amazing game. I've been playing shooters since the early days of Doom and Quake. I was playing Quake arena back in 1997, on dial-up, and Killzone 2 has been the best shooter experience I've had since then. The single-player campaign is great, and I thought that the story was not as bad as some have made it out to be. In fact, I liked it. Sure, Rico can get a bit annoying sometimes, but I think overall he does add something to the game. The multiplayer, called "Warzone", is where this baby really shines. First of all the graphics on this game are the best I've seen on almost every game out there. They are just as good as Uncharted 2, in my opinion. You combine this with great gameplay, realistic controls, a great clan and squad system, good physics, and you have a stunning multiplayer that will keep you busy for hours and days to come. You won't want to put the controller down. It's just that good. And yes I've played all the Call of Duties, but Killzone 2 I think is overall a better multiplayer. Expand

very nicely done game. I found at the start i was slightly struggling with the sensitivity- finding it difficult to get it just right, but you do manage quite quickly to get the hang of it. If anything else its exteremly engaging, graphically stunning, the wepons give you a sense of alccomplishment when you kill your enemies, and the enemies in of themselves are talented fighters who are a force to be reckoned with through every part of the game. I'm not the biggest FPS shooter fan, but having played resistance 2, COD4, COD5, Rainbow 6 2 and others, this is without question my most favourite. COD4 meets Halo with a touch of the strategy found in raindbow 6 makes this a must play for those who want to see the playstation 3 live up to all its expectations. Xbox360 beware, you do have mighty impressive games such as GOW2 but, this is something to give it a run for its money (which is more...) wicked game. Good job. Expand

Highly polished and full of white-knuckle action, Killzone easily becomes what Halo 3 is for 360 and Crysis for PC, for PS3 - a benchmark. Graphics are out of this world, the sense of fighting against a ruthless enemy in a very hostile world is overwhelming, the atmosphere is dark and moody, and the AI is cunning . I was a big fan of Resistance 2 before Killzone 2 came out, but Killzone 2 easily tops it (and any other FPS on PS3) as the new king. This is the best FPS on Sony's system, period. Expand

This is the best FPS ever. dont listen to these whining Xbots . These BOTS never played the game . Killzone 2 makes any game on their console look like a wii game. KZ2 offers the best MP as well as the best SP experience. The online WARZONE is just a blast . The SP offers the most intense campaigns along with the hardest boss fights ever seen in a game. I traded in those garbage COD4/5 after buying KZ2. anyone who has played KZ2 will do the same. Expand

This game really shows off the power of the PS3. I'm always excited to see new games by Naughty Dog and Insomniac. I was skeptical about KZ2 being awesome but it totally exceeded my expectations. Guerilla Games have established themselves as one of the best developers. Gears 2 is as good as things are going to get on the 360. Games like KZ2 are showing us that there is still much potential left in the PS3. Now is a great time to own a PS3. Expand

This game is epic. The visuals are, as expected, unmatched by any console game previously seen. The sounds are equally as good, immersing you in the gameplay and attributing to a fantastic all round experience. The storyline isn't as weak as some make out, I found it quite solid, but the multiplayer makes up for any flaws. The clan system is deep and, unlike CoD, has more meaning to it than just a clan tag. The gameplay is smooth and unique. I think it really works and feels incredibly satisfying. To top off this great game, GG offer brilliant customer support, releasing patches to fix problems immediately after they are identified. This quiet simply is the best mulitiplayer game i have ever played with amazing visuals and stunning audio(Surround sound turn right up) it's far better to any other game on the market at the moment. O.K the single player is not that long but still jaw dropping at times, still these days online gaming is what it's all about and this does not disappoint at all. So many new ideas with all different classes which make it so differant to anything else i've played on the ps3 anyway. At first the online might seen difficult but if you put in the time you will be rewarded with month's of entertainment. Some people have moaned that the aiming is bad and it could have been better in places but this is mainly from jealous xbox owners who are gutted that it can never be made on there systems. All i can say to the people who don't like it for what ever reason or find the aiming to difficult is to stick with COD4 or 5. ZZZZZZZ. Activision need to up there efforts with the next COD game to compete with this masterpiece. GOOD LUCK they will need it. Expand

Where people are whining and complaining about the done and done over concept of 'Point shoot, survive, rinse and repeat', it's the essential combination of any successful First Person Shooter (FPS) on the market. Every Call of Duty game with the exception of 4, along with every Medal of Honor game ever created, follows the same storyline; You are not a Nazi, it's your job to go kill Nazi's, go go go! There's never any variation; there's no way to really change what has already happened and call your game a "WW2 Sim". Now, what's wrong exactly with Killzone 2's storyline in similarity? Isn't this story EXACTLY the same thing? Country (in this case, another planet; Helghan) invades another country (also in this canse, another planet; Vekta), tries to take over because they were agitated / annoyed / pushed too the limit / feeling oppressed / find themselves inheritantly superior / the people they're invading are the 'real oppressors'. Invaded country holds off as long as possible before finally pushing invaders away. Invaded now become the invaders. New invaders do what they went to do, but get stomped in the process. Ladies and gents; this is a war game. If you don't like war, this isn't for you. This game is what all war games dream to be, just in year 4010. The gameplay is extremely immersive, the level design in singleplayer and multiplayer is not only intense, but never boring, and the animation / graphic / sound performance is unparalleled. Where in the Halo franchise, I felt like i was playing something akin to a cartoon with guns, with this I feel like I'm in the middle of a war. And I freaking love it. It's a top notch game with better multiplayer than I've ever been in. It's not gimped to the point of being an entirely new game - everything is exactly the same, except for the removal of cover-taking, which is a bonus to forwarding gameplay. Love this game, will likely play it for as long as the servers are up. Which I predict will be up until Killzone 3 is released. Expand

Bought this game for $20, and the only thing I didn't like about it was getting my ass kicked on elite difficulty or online. The controls aren't for everyone, but they add a new and interesting approach to gunplay that involves using your head more than you use the fire button. Could have used a toggle crouch option for the otherwise perfect first person cover system, but other than that, I didn't have any problems with the controls. Some say that the game-play can be repetitive, but I strongly disagree. The game-play is dynamic in that your character is rendered in real time and the game will periodically switch to a third person perspective. Your character even emits his own shadow from multiple light sources which are also among the best lighting effects in the history of gaming. There are many different enemy types and each one can provide a tough challenge even on recruit difficulty. The impressive A.I. bounds from cover to cover and flanks you if given the opportunity. Any dissapointments killzone 1 had were fixed in this game. Possibly the best shooter sequel ever in terms of improvements in quality. In terms of graphics -well- what can I see about killzone 2's visuals that hasn't already been said. The visuals are simply phenomenal and the frame rests at a smooth 30fps while screen tearing is non-existent. The artful use of excellent cell-shading and textures are beautiful. Sadly, the game features no co-op but the campaign and multiplayer provide a great experience. The campaign stays true to the killzone storyline and does a good job of keeping the player interested. The Helghast have a more dramatic presence and the ending provides a nice cliff-hanger for a sequel. The story could have used more depth as we no relatively little about the Helghast and ISA motives for war but otherwise the plot is easy to follow and the voice acting is good. The multiplayer is similar to games like team fortress or battlefield as it focuses on classes. Good teamwork and diverse use of classes are the key to winning online. Dedicated servers improve the reliability of the game, and the maps are fun to play. All in all, Killzone 2 progresses the killzone series forward and is a worthy sequel. Expand

Where it lacks in an indepth and gripping story it makes up for in beautifull visuals, The Enemies AI is incredibl tactfull in their approach at war while your allies AI is less so it still manages to pull the attention of your enemies from you making it a nice change from the norm where you the player are not always walking around with a target on your forehead. Other then that the Gameplay is much of what we've seen from other great fps Its just been done better and extroadinarly so by killzone2. The Multiplayer is a beautifull hybrid of Battlefield badcompany, call of duty and team fortress 2 and it works amazingly so class systems and levellng up strategically make it one of the most enjoyable online experiences to date. I was pretty skeptical based on the mixed reviews, but this game is actually pretty astounding. Once you get the hang of the controls, the gameplay becomes immensely satisfying. The reviews given by Absolute games, edge magazine and teletext gamecentral are in my opinion sickening and should be taken right off metacritic. Without one single doubt in my mind, this is the best first-person shooter I have EVER played. The singleplayer has a great story compared to other fps', and I felt that the ending was just magnificent with the help of Rico. Elite mode was sick, and attempting to beat it without losing any lives proved the hardest gaming goal I have ever achieved. Multiplayer, is on par to that of Halo 3 and easily surpasses that of Call of Duty 4. Thanks to the 1.20 patch, there are very fluid controls, and I was amazed to see the level of detail and graphics put even into this part of the game. Throughout my 20 hours of playing the online mode, I have never experienced any lag at all. Warzone mode is the icing on the cake, allowing the game type to be changed in a matter of seconds after one objective complete. I have really enjoyed this game since I bought it. The guns, though inaccurate at times, feel heavy and give that sense of power when you're shooting them. Movement feels much more real as when you sprint, your body carries momentum and it takes a bit longer to stop, turn, and aim. The action is intense, and the gun battles in the SP are just awesome. In those battles, the sounds of bullets whizzing by, soldiers yelling at each other, explosions, it's all well done. This game was one of my reasons to get my ps3, and it did not fail to deliver. This is an amazing game! when I got the PS3 I really was only looking forward to metal gear solid 4 but when I heard about killzone 2 I was excited, but skeptical. I got this game expecting a slightly above average game instead what I got was a reason to turn on my PS3 for more then media. the story is a 9 out of 10( the reason for this is for little grips such as it drags on a bit and some enemies can be repetitive) and the online is 9.8 out of 10, the reason I gave it that is you can't change the controller layout the way you want and you have to level up to get all your weapons and abilities which is not bad, but at first it's disappointing to see just a basic FPS with only a few weapons. Get past that and it is the best online experience I have ever had. The story is standard fair for a FPS, above average but nothing to keep you playing the story over and over again. overall its a little under a 10 just for the fact that there is little nagging features that are keeping it from a 10. To sum it up, Call of Duty 4, Still KIng of multiplayer. This game, best rental ever. First off, best graphics I've ever seen in any system. (And I own them all). I just beat the campaign mode in 9 and a half hours. It was a blast. If you have a good HD set, you're friends will drool at the sight of this game in motion in glorious 1080p. If you own a 120hz set, grab a bucket. Now, the game has 1 big flaw. The controls are clunky and if you're used to play COD4, you will feel like you're playing underwater playing this game. You kind of get used to it during campaign. I tried the multiplayer and it was OK. But the control issue makes you slow at reacting and you just can't move or dispatch enemies as fast as Modern Warfare has accustomed us to. Because of these issues and with the graphics alone as an upside, I just don't see myself popping this game inside my PS3 for a multiplayer session instead of playing COD4, let alone paying 50-60 bucks to keep it after beating my rental copy. If you're a PS3 owner you owe it to yourself to play this game and see what your black shiny beast is capable of doing when the programmers know what they're doing and are competent enough to harness a big chuck of the untapped PS3 power. Now, graphics wise, this game has spoiled me by setting the bar so high that I won't settle for anything inferior from now on. From here on out, every time a new PS3 game is released and does not look like this or better, I will deem the programmers incompetent and undeserving of their salaries. Expand

One thing held back this game from a perfect 10, and that is story. It had great potential for an epic and even moving story. There were moments where you can see the anguish in the main characters face and you wanted to feel for him, but lack of story didn't allow that. Also, the graphics are the top of the line sans Crysis. Even though Crysis looks better still frame, KZ2 takes the cake in over all animation and technical prowess. While the controls may initially feel odd, it can be easily adapted too. Anyone with a PS3 and that loves a shooter NEEDS to get this game. While it doesn't bring much to the table in terms of "innovation" it sure is the best damn polished game I have played to date. Expand

I have never seen a game where so much stuff happens on screen. Its war, and you know it is. You feel like a soldier struggling for his life. Especially in the amzing final level. The final level is the most epic level I have ever played in an fps. You are litterally struggling for every inch of the battlefield. First off, if you hate this game, you most likely suck at it, giving a game a 0/10 just because you are completely horrible at it is just ignorant. The controls take some getting used to but that's because of the weight of the weapons and the lack of an Aim-Assist (in games like CoD and RFOM when your crosshair is close enough to someone it automatically targets them). The story on normal mode is an 8/10, but on Elite difficulty it's easily a 10. The multiplayer is better than any game this generation. It's deeper than CoD4, CoD5, and Resistance combined. Th graphics and sound are the best console games have to offer. Killzone 2 is the new king of console multiplayer. Expand

Best graphics, AI and multiplayer for this generation of consoles hands down. This isn't your generic shooter like everyone says, and anyone who says that hasn't played it. You have to think (no running and gunning). The cover system is phenomenal, something neither COD4 nor Halo 3 have. 32 player online again something COD4 nor Halo have. Intelligent enemies they play better than most people online and that isn't even on the hardest difficulty. Haters need to stop and just play the game. If you like lag free online and quick matchmaking this game is for you. The multiplayer is what makes this game though, it's better than COD4. The campaign is just a balls out action fest, which was good enough to play through more than once. Multiplayer, much better since they fixed the movement acceleration, is constantly evolving as you level up, and with the new classes, the way you play changes constantly... it rarely feels stale. This is a great game. Visually stunning in every aspect. Frame rates are not an issue, it is smooth all the way through in both single and multi, but some can lie or be in there own world if it makes them feel better. Controls are also not an issue. If people can remember, games have been around longer than cod4, cod4 was not the first game ever made. Because youve played cod4 online for 13 weeks is not an excuse to hate on a game thats controls arent the same. Now these controls can be changed in KZ2, they are not the issue. The only thing that may be at issue here, is the sensitivity, which you just have to get used to because its based off of realistic weight properties. Please carry a gun and tell me how fast you can turn, KZ2 will closer to it than cod4, so those complaining about that need to stop. I rate it a 9 because of some of the AI issues. They dont kill the game, but are irritating, at least to me. The AI can be cheap at times, killing you as you turn a corner (ex, i opened a door which i was suppose to, was killed instantly by a Helgast with a shotgun... lame). Your teammates often stand around, but mostly if its just you and one other guy, when its several they do fine. But mostly they dont seem to help too much. And they story could have been a little more in depth, but its at least solid. Cover system works well, multiplayer is too. up to 32 players with no lag is amazing. This is a very well done game, has some minor issues (as does every game mind you), but shouldn't deter anyone from getting it. Expand

Presentation: 9.8/10 The atmosphere in this game is without a doubt the most intense and chaotic of any FPS ever made. Your heart will never stop pounding from the insane action. The only reason I'm not giving it a 10 is because of the cheesy dialogue and useless swearing. Graphics: 10/10 This is unquestionably the most beautiful console game ever made. The technical AND artistic direction is beautiful. Only MGS4 and Gears 2 come close to its graphics. Sound: 9.4 The background music and yelling of your teammates makes the game all the more intense. Again, its the cheesy dialogue that's holding this category back. Gameplay: 9.8 The campaign mode is so intense and fun. The AI is outstanding, extremely intelligent. The graphics are jaw-dropping. The weapons are fun to shoot and well designed. My only complaint is that the controls are a bit too slow and unresponsive. Especially with the vehicles. Lasting Appeal: 9.6 While the campaign does offer a bit of fun to play through, its the multiplayer that will keep you hooked. Extremely fun and hectic, it's one of the best Multiplayer's out there. Overall: 9.6/10 This game is really brilliant and fun. It's one of the reasons to buy a PS3, alongside MGS4 and LBP. It's the third best game on the PS3, behind LittleBigPlanet and MGS4. But it's still extremely fun and awesome. Expand

Did the graphics meet the bar set by the E3 trailer from 2005? Absolutely. Is it a solid FPS? Oh yeah. Is the game innovative? In my opinion, Yes. Did it live up to the hype? Try it yourself and you tell me. Let me get to the one gripe of the game first, the Controls: I was not entirely pleased until I found out the problems most people have are caused by a Display setting on their PS3s. The controls are fine, work great. It was the complaint about latency (lag) when trying to aim or move. Cross Color Filter Reduction is causing havoc for many gamers. Turn this off and BAM! Problem solved, controls feel more responsive. Graphics: Best in class. Best of the Best. At first, they didn't seem to be that great. In some ways I felt Gears of War 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 looked better. Until I moved past the first 2 levels. Once you get to the 3rd stage, wow. Unbelievable. Everything really begins to pick up and you are in for an outstanding visual treat. It is truly a stunning game that will amaze anyone with the high level of detail and thumping crisp sound. Oh the sound. It's an overload of the senses. Innovation: Many people say the game did not innovate. I would happily challenge anyone to debate on this topic. Sure many things included are standard FPS features. Level styles, turret and vehicle segments, cover system, destructible environment, online class system, and proximity chat. Yet, not many games have been able include all of this within one title. Actually, I can only think of one game that has done all of these in one installment; Killzone 2. The developers made the cover system work well for the first time in an FPS while remaining in First Person View. F.E.A.R. dabbled at it, but it felt tacked on and weak. Rainbow Six Vegas has a working version, but changes to 3rd person to make it effective. There is far more destructible environments than I initially expected which really adds to the immersion of a great title. Story: Not Oscar winning dialog or story. No. People complain about the fowl language used in the game. To those people who complain about it; How many military branches do you know of where, when they are at war and are in the heat of battle talk like a college professor? If I'm being shot at while on the battlefield of a war, you better be %$#-@#$% #*$^&@#! right I am going to get fowl mouthed. Its your typical macho men war style talk. What do you expect? Dialog found in Driving Miss Daisy? I hope not. Multiplayer: Community. Deep. Addictive. Fast. Chaotic. Everything you want in an online shooter. Class system with customizable options (similar to FFXI sub-jobs) really flesh out the online space and turn it into an FPS/RPG. Leveling up hasn't felt so rewarding since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. With so many classes, weapons, badges, ribbons, and trophies to unlock. There is plenty there to keep everyone busy for many many months (or years) to come. Complete with leaderboards, stat tracking, Clan system, Join friend/clan options. Doesn't get much better than this. Co-op: Minimal co-op options, but with the option to have online bots what's so different from this and Gears' Horde mode? Sure a co-op story would have been nice, but I am happy the team behind Killzone 2 remained focus on creating one of the best multiplayer experiences on any platform. Besides, I hear the developers are looking into expanding co-op functionality via DLC! Gameplay 9.8 Graphics 10 Sound 10 Presentation 10 Story 9.0 ------------ Overall 9.75 Expand

This game is more like a 9.5 for me. Graphically and technically, it is handsdown the best FPS ever. Unless you know the mythology of the game, there will not be much of a story in it for you. But, I also don't think there is much of a story to COD4, Halo or some of the other shooters out there that are considered "the best". This is an unfair knock at KZ2. The campaign is intense, tout, and can be challenging, given the amazing AI that the Helghast display. Just like other great FPSs, the multi-player is where this game shines. The on-line experience is even more amazing that the campaign, because of the game types, the weapons, the leveling-up, and the map design. All of this made even more incredible by the fact that the visuals are just as stunning and immersive as in the campaign mode. Nothing like this has been achieved previously. The default controls can take some getting used to, but they can be changed for those who need it. The realistic physics and "heavyness" of the character movement are a plus for me, as these have struck me as caroony and unrealistc in some of the best FPS -- yes, I mean COD4. This game will be bested, but it is going to take some time. Regardless of your current console persuasion. It would be a shame to miss playing this game. If for some reason you still don't have a PS#, go buy one if you can afford it. Expand

The new standard for FPS games. The way the game looks, feels and sounds is all top notch. In so many ways KZ2 is the same as most great FPS games. What KZ2 does is takes the formula and makes it better. Mulitplayer same as most FPS games but done better, Graphics are better, sounds are better, gameplay better. Basically KZ2 is a highly polished game and I love it. KZ2 has made the FPS genre exciting again. Expand

Story is good not great but the graphics are stunning. I couldn't believe the shadows. The first time I saw my shadow moving along with me I unloaded on it before realizing. Also multiplayer graphics are still outstanding. Unlike COD where you see a slight decline in graphics to multiplayer. The longer I play it the more I like it.

This game plays like a dream and looks fantastic, I have read that some people have had problems with the controls, I have had no such problems, only one sore point, Helghast all have british accents and the hero's all American, movie cliche or what? To sum up, best fps ever.

One of the best shooters on the PS3 console today. The controls are solid and the graphics are amazing. You'd have to be a pretty poor gamer to not understand these controls! It took me two minutes to understand the control scheme. I've played alot of next gen shooters, COD4, Halo 3, Gears Of War Series, COD5, Team Fortress, Resistance Series and the list goes on. I'm not a fanboy for any systems, i like them all in there own unique ways and each game shines in it own right, but i'd have to say the set up of killzone multiplayer and the graphics are what makes this game shine a little bit bighter than the rest. Yes Killzone 2 is hard, but its not any harder than any other game on max difficulty. Jeesh a company reinvents the typical A.I. to more than just running out in the open and dying to an A.I. that dodges grenandes, flanks your position and isnt afraid to rush. Killzone 2 draws a line between casual gamers and hardcore gamers, you beat this game on expert, every shooter after it will be a cake walk. This game is a masterpiece and it sets the bar for shooters in the years to come, and like Vinny B said, if you can't figure out the controls or don't like the aiming, stick to COD4, Killzone 2 is out of your league. Critic score distribution:
  1. Positive: 90 out of 94

  1. It's true that Killzone 2 is filled with moments that can handily be described as inspiring awe. Each scene is incredibly well detailed, from the gaps in jerry-rigged cover points letting you sneak in a killing headshot to scarred and scratched textures, the planet feels entirely believable... Without a doubt Killzone fans, action and shooter fans of any stripe will instantly tag this sequel as a powerful contender for best game of 2009. [Feb 2009, p.38]
  2. Killzone 2’s secret ingredient is the fluidity in gameplay that we have come to enjoy more than its graphical prowess or jaw-dropping visuals. And that’s what games have always been about... We're surprised to see Killzone 2 blows our expectations out of the water with a memorable SP campaign and a stellar MP component. To put it short, this game makes "Gears of War 2" look like a high school attempt at gaming and that is a HUGE compliment!
  3. Visually it's so far ahead of anything else out there it shatters your expectations...This is a PS3 showing what it's truly capable of and delivering a landmark piece of explosive entertainment you can't afford to miss. [Feb 2009, p.88]
