The game succeeds in generating some excitement (especially in multi-player mode) and executes well on most levels. Still, if given a choice I'd lean more to "NBA Live 2001," which for the moment, at least, retains its title as the number 1 basketball title to buy.
Forget about your outside game--it's next to impossible to sink a trey. And the acid-trip free throw meter will have you wondering what the 989 gang was huffing when they thought it up.
There are too many nagging problems, from the stuttering animation to the strange, stooped-over look of most of the players, as if they couldn't stand up straight.
If I had to choose I'd say "ESPN NBA 2Night" is better than "NBA Live 2001", which in turn is marginally better than both "ShootOut 2001" and "Final Four."
989 should just stop with these crummy sports games already. They can't currently compete with the folks at Visual Concepts and EA Sports. If this is next-gen basketball, then I'll stick with the good old days.
Summary989 has opted to take the easy road this time around, and the result is a basketball game that remains virtually unchanged from last year's version.
