The track design, controls and "rhythm racing" focus are all excellent, while the game runs great and looks decent enough to keep you engaged for some time. That is, if you don't fall asleep during the load times.
  2. Captures the zippy arcade spirit of the console versions, but doesn't always hit the mark.
  3. The great controls, fun game modes, interesting track design and vehicle mixing make this game a real treat. The really long load times, no major career mode and lack of online play will make fans cry.
  4. Game Informer
Not only does it throw a lot of racing at you--in various forms and on a bunch of locations--but it captures the spirit of Rainbow's rhythm racing. [May 2006, p.113]

Being able to carry around so much gaming goodness is a boon, particularly since playing in small chunks is so rewarding. It's too bad that gamers looking for a great online race will have to search elsewhere.
  6. The PSP version seems more forgiving than the PS2 version when it comes to collisions with other drivers.
  7. Aside from those pesky loading times, the game does a very admirable job of translating the console experience to a handheld system.
  8. 60
The load times ruin this game. Just going into the pregame menus will buy you several seconds of delay as the system freezes up. Restarting a course will only take a few seconds, but the initial track load will usually clock between one and three minutes. That's right, sports fans, we said three minutes.
  9. Games Master UK
Yet another PSP racer, but at least this one is a bit different. Muddy good. [July 2006, p.84]
  10. The sensitive controls are a huge hurdle that needs to be crossed for newcomers, but existing fans of THQ's extreme sports series will soon ease into a competent handheld game.
  11. The great control, realistic physics, and abundance of tracks give MX vs. ATV Unleashed: On The Edge a lot to boast about.
  12. Extreme racing is truly well and good on the PSP, with solid fast-paced action on the small screen and excellent visual which would please the series' fans.

MX vs. ATV Unleashed: On the Edge is hindered by some technical issues like the long loading and the lack of an auto save.
  14. 60
I wish MX Vs. ATV Unleashed: On the Edge wasn't such a punishment in terms of its loading time and its lapse in autosaving. Otherwise, what we'd have here is racing gold struck yet again for the PSP, with its manic style and its tight controls wrapped around a decent (in the "we've seen it before" sense) presentation.
  15. Play UK
An instantly tiresome game free from anything genuinely new or interesting. [Issue#139, p.71]
  16. Official U.S. Playstation Magazine
Cripplingly bad load times and no infrastructure play. [May 2006, p.96]
  17. PSM Magazine
But how can you really enjoy a game that's supposed to be portable, that's supposed to be playable anytime and anywhere, when you have to wait so long to start just one race? The answer: not very well. [May 2006, p.85]
  18. The load times are absolutely horrendous.
  19. MX vs. ATV Unleashed does a respectable job of bringing action sports to the PSP, but it fails to deliver on excitement, which is a requirement for any extreme sports game.
  20. It plays well overall (minus the tricky landing controls), looks awesome, sounds great and contains a whopping array of game options, modes and unlockable content to shoot for.
  21. Official Playstation 2 Magazine UK
This extreme racer may be competent, but it's about as fun as wading through marshland in your socks. [May 2006, p.89]
  22. PSM2 Magazine UK
It isn't terrible, but it's doing absolutely nothing that we've not seen before. It's a realistic, but soulless, exhibition of off-road action. Get it on PS2 instead. [May 2006, p.78]

The same copy and paste game we always receive from THQ. Its fun, fast and doesn't take itself seriously, just as it should be. I still think it should be better though. Full Review »
