While Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is a total departure in every way from what Konami proper had started, it manages to reinvigorate the series. This "re-imagining" could have been a story rehash, instead we get a brilliantly deep game with subtle subtext and surprising symbolism.
Absolutely physiological horror game. And the fact that it profiles you with every move just makes this a more memorable and horrifying experience. You are fighting against the horror of your OWN mind in some way. Absolutely mind blowing
There are some incredible moments encapsulated within Harry's icy journey and you will be both wowed and scared as you finally uncover the truth about his daughter's disappearance and the nightmarish goings-on in the creepy town.
Forget about the Nightmare sequences; just sink into the ambiance, furrow your brow over the great puzzles, and marvel at the beautiful bleakness of it all. If you've been looking for something genuinely engaging to play on your Wii, your search is at an end.
So though it may not be the unqualified success we were hoping for, Shattered memories proves an audacious and ultimately compelling experiment. [Holiday 2009, p.84]
Shattered Memories is an uneven, disappointing game which nevertheless shows ample promise of where the series might go from here. Fingers crossed that Climax re-evaluates the abysmal nightmare sequences and ups the fright-factor while maintaining their shrewd emphasis on pared-back, psychological horrors.
It's an incredibly original and ambitious project, but the weight of its problems, both old and new, keep it from being much more than a nostalgic love letter addressed to diehard series fans.
(Spoilers ahead). The game certainly overstays its welcome but it is mechanically fun to play. The highlight is the story and how it's laid out as more of a mystery than a horror tale. Long gone is the cult of Silent Hil, and in its place we have a father fighting to find his daughter in a seemingly empty and frozen town. The few that remain in town are unfamiliar with the main character, Harry Mason.
Gameplay-wise **** memories bring new ideas to the table but lack variety. I enjoyed the many directions and different interactions the game gives you, which may take many playthroughs to see all, but walking around listening to audio logs, reading diaries, and solving intricate puzzles gets old after a few hours. Even if you are making progress.
There is no combat, only running away from monsters inside frozen mazes where you can get lost fast if you don't pay attention to the map on your phone.
The story is the star here, the rest is a not-so-fun walk in the snow.
This really didn't do it for me. I'm such a huge fan of the original and SH3. This game felt like a step backwards. It was a interesting twist over the original, but average at best. It has a creepy feel to it, but the maze like chase sequences get old fast. The game has no weapons. Graphically is inferior to Silent Hill 3. I would have preferred a remake done in the same vein as REmake with the same gameplay as SH3. That's just wishful thinking.
SummaryWhile the game shares its twisting plot with the original PlayStation game, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories takes a different path in many, many ways. Characters can be approached but offer different responses and be found in different places, while new clues and gameplay paths can be followed. The title follows Harry Mason, as he attemp...
