  1. The game is a great fit on the PSP, and the widescreen perspective complements the large, horizontally oriented level designs nicely. By contrast, the DS version is awkward and ugly and generally fails to capture the feel of Worms.

Going at it with other players in Open Warfare is definitely enjoyable, but going solo against the computer is rather mundane.

And while the occasional AI problem keeps the game from reaching its full potential, Worms: Open Warfare still manages to never stop entertaining.

It's great for fans who want a faithful iteration of the series on the PSP. It's also a good game to play in quick 10-minute bursts. But if you find yourself bored with strategic silliness, or if you never liked Worms to begin with, there's not much here to love.
  5. Compared to the jittery Nintendo DS version, this one clips along nicely, with expectedly superior graphics and slightly better sound quality.
  6. Easy to pick up, easy to use, not overly complicated and you can play as little or as much as you like.
  7. 70
Classic Worms gaming on the go, let down by erratic worms and limited multiplayer options.

Firmly back in the second dimension where it belongs, this portable entry in the "Worms" franchise will take you back to the glory days of "Armageddon" and "World Party". [May 2006, p.113]
  9. Without the infrastructure and game sharing, the game fails to capitalize on a lucrative multiplayer experience and instead settles for mediocrity.
  10. If you're into strategy games, chances are you've come across these cute but dangerous worms. Decent choice for those wanting to game on the go.
  11. I have a hard time finding justification for the reduction in weapons and the tragic loss of the true campaign mode. While it is still a fun game to play with some friends, it had the potential to be more so, and it also had the potential to be vastly more entertaining for a single player.

Good fun with a mate, but staggeringly empty in solo mode. Buying this to play alone is like getting a pack of card just for Solitaire. [Apr 2006, p.78]

There's no new weapons, no online play, and I don't even think there's any new sound sets for your team of worms. If you're new to the series or just want some strategic warfare on the go, Open Warfare is fantastic. Worms veterans beware, however.
  14. The Worms' first outing on the PSP plays well, but rather strangely doesn't pack a big enough punch.

If you're a Worms fan, Open Warfare will merely fill your need for a portable version. If you've never liked the series before, don't expect this game to change your mind. [Jun 2006, p.85]

In the end, if you're got a fellow strategy fan sitting within a 30-meter radious of you, then you can have a fine old time with Open Warfare. But, if not, you're unlikely to get more than a rental's worth of gameplay out of it. [Jun 2006, p.102]

Small in every sense. It's still pleasingly violent - but this is a bare-bones edition. [June 2006, p.69]

Worst worms game in the series but Worms: Open Warfare 2 is the best game in the series. I recomend that one over this one any day. worms: OW Worst worms game in the series but Worms: Open Warfare 2 is the best game in the series. I recomend that one over this one any day. worms: OW 1 has no online, looks like crap, not enough variety and to few weapons. Worms: OW 2 has all this plus more including downloadable content to expand your worms experiance. Full Review »

I got this game for my birthday, and im loving every bit of it. I have loved Worms since the first one, and Worms Open Warfare is a trip back I got this game for my birthday, and im loving every bit of it. I have loved Worms since the first one, and Worms Open Warfare is a trip back to its roots. I prefer the 2D worms by far, the 3D versions are still good but its just not the same, using the bazooka in Worms 3D is virtually impossible. Full Review »
