TY the Tasmanian Tiger 4: Bush Rescue Returns is a strong platformer with a uniquely Aussie charm. A lot of care has gone into bringing TY’s fourth outing to life on the Switch, with delightful audiovisuals that immerse the player in the outback.
TY The Tasmanian Tiger 4’s return is once again a bittersweet moment for longtime fans of the Aussie video game mascot. On one hand, it’s great to see this series that's now more than 20 years old showing some signs of life with another enhanced release, but the fourth outing feels like a step back compared to TY’s best 3D adventures. There's still plenty to like about the Switch version of Bush Rescue Returns, though, especially if you embrace the level design and collecting. Here’s hoping this Aussie legend can appear in 3D for a future outing.
TY the Tasmanian Tiger 4: Bush Rescue Returns is a fun adventure on Nintendo Switch, albeit a flawed and inconsistent one. It took me 5 to 6 hours to beat, and there’s plenty more bonus content to unlock, including a ton of silly optional costumes. While I enjoyed my time with the game, the wonky platforming, simplified combat and annoying boss battles all held it back from more. That said, if you’re a fan of platformers and want to check out a silly, Aussie story, then it’s still worth picking the game up.
TY the Tasmanian Tiger 4: Bush Rescue Returns may be a step down from its 3D roots but what's here is still rather enjoyable.
Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 4 originally came out eight years ago, and I imagine at the time it might have been nice to see any signs of life from the series. But since we’re this many years down the road without any follow-up, there’s no need to pretend this has any chance of being a Hail Mary that saves Ty and brings us the game we really want. This is a thoroughly average 2D platformer in every sense of the word, and while my mind can conjure up far worse things, I still can’t recommend this with any vigor at all.
TY the Tasmanian Tiger 4 Bush Rescue isn’t a busted title, but it doesn’t do anything to make it feel memorable or special from other platformers out there. It mostly felt repetitive and not challenging enough to make it rewarding.
I wanted to like Ty 4 a lot more than I did, and while there is some fun to be had with the game, I found myself wishing from start to finish that it was the 3D platformer game I pictured in my head when somebody said Ty the Tasmanian Tiger.
