The Golden Horde is a pleasant shake up to the usual tried and true method of a RTS game, mixing light RPG to give the player the chance to better customise and tune their own war machine is an engaging feature. Unfortunately this also plays against as some won’t find it to their tastes.
A unique subject matter is the most compelling aspect of this otherwise boring real-time strategy game.
The problem is that for every tentative, stumbling step that Golden Horde makes towards originality, it fails on something crucial.
The Golden Horde is still appealing owing to its interesting troop creation system and its focus on a rare setting, but the campaign moves along far too slowly and focuses too much on stealth and not enough on fighting.
It wants to tell the stories of medieval history, but instead tells the stories of the limitations of modern game development. [May 2008, p.79]
